The science lab looks like your standard high school science lab. Lab benches in two neat rows faced a larger lab bench and chalkboard at the front of the room. There was a large open space between the last lab bench and the back row of counters and cabinets that held the assembled detritus of science!. Various projects cluttered the counters lining the classroom. A large window was propped slightly open. Those who were a few minutes early got to witness Ms Frizzle's arrival, which involved two bounces, a spin, and finished with her standing on tiptoe on foot, pointing dramatically away with a lizard clinging to her shoulder.

Today, the Friz was wearing a dress covered in, well, science!. Test tubes, flasks, atoms, cells, mathematical constants, and even a couple of planets formed the print, and bacteriophages hung from her ears.

"Good afternoon, class!" she announced, striking another little pose as Liz scrambled down from her shoulder to the safety of the lab bench and collected a stack of papers. "Welcome to Science! I hope you're all as excited about this course as I am! My name is Ms Frizzle, and this is my assistant, Liz!"

Liz waved.

"Liz is handing around the syllabus for the course and as you can see, I haven't planned a lesson for us today! I always enjoy classes so much more when I know who I'm teaching, so time for a few introductions. I am Ms Frizzle, as I said. I used to teach at Walkerville Elementary School and I love teaching science! I'm a big fan of field trips and I hope you'll get plenty of hands-on experience in this class! My favourite thing about science is figuring out how things work!"

She bounced and spun in place before clasping her hands under her chin excitedly. "Your turn! I'm sure you're sick of introductions, but tell me your name, where you're from, your favourite thing about science and whatever else you want! Also, I'm in need of a teaching assistant! If you're interested, please speak to me after class!"

"Mostly computer technology," Mac replied. "But, I'm open to all sorts."

"Wonderful!"

"Hey," Lucas whispered to Mac once Ms Frizzle had moved on to someone else.

Mac smiled at him. "Hi, presumably new person," she whispered back.

"Definitely new. I'm Lucas."

"Awesome." Obviously she's just introduced herself, so doing it again would be a little redundant. She glanced back at Ms Frizzle. "She's... different, huh?"

"Uh," Lucas looked at the bouncing science teacher, then back at Mac. "Different covers it. Different is diplomatic. I was thinking more high on stimulants, but we can go with different."

Mac laughed quietly and nodded. "Your description might be considered by some to be the more accurate one. Weird is kinda relative in this school."

"So I'm quickly learning. I'm guessing you've been here a while, longer than me at least, so I'm hoping you can help me out."

Mac shrugged. "Sure. I can try."

"Could you give me directions to the computer lab? I've been looking, but wherever I go, I wind up outside the Vice Principal's office. I don't know if it's a trick or if I'm just really bad at directions."

"Never been a problem I've had," Mac said with a chuckle. "But, I wouldn't be shocked to find out she'd planned it like that. I could show you where it is after class if you want?" she offered.

Lucas nodded a little too quickly. "Yeah, definitely. I'd like that. I have my own computer, but I thought I'd check out the local hardware."

"I'm like that too," she said grinning at Lucas. "The network was down this morning, but so long as you don't want them to actually do a whole lot right now, and you know where it is." She shrugged, "The system isn't half bad, normally."

He nodded enthusiastically. "Cool. Very cool. Mostly I just want to know how to get there, so I know how to get back there whenever I want."

"That also helps," Mac said. "Although, if it's the principal's doing, I can't guarantee it's not gonna keep happening."

"Does she do that kind of thing often? It's sounds like punishment for computer geeks."

"Well, no," Mac admitted. "But, considering we have a locker that eats people for weekends and pudding rain..."

She shrugged. "I have my laptop all connected to the network anyway."

"When you say 'eats people for weekends'...I mean, as fascinating as I'm sure it'd be, I don't really want to experience the digestive tract of a locker first hand."

"Not literal eating," Mac amended. "I don't think... It just kinda sucks people into alternate dimensions and stuff."

"It spat legwarmers at us once," she said, somewhat proudly.

"That's good for winter," Lucas admitted. "Which locker is this?"

"Uh, 327," Mac said after a moment of thought. "Don't stand too close," she advised.

He wrote that down. "Definitely won't stand too close. Anything else I should know? Bathrooms to avoid if I don't want to get caught in a flood? Supply closets that transport you to Mars?"

"When I first came there were rumours of a tentacle monster in the second floor bathrooms," Mac said. "But I don't think it's shown itself in a really long time."

"I'll keep an eye out anyway." He smiled. "Thanks."
