Guitar, Period 4, Thursday

There was a large plate of tacos waiting by the door when the students came in. They were free to grab them, if they so chose.

"Buenos dias," El said. "Welcome to Guitar: The Musicians's soul. These days, I am known as El Mariachi. Often shortened to 'El'. You, however, may call me El Professor."

He cleared his throat and bowed his head ever so slightly. "I'm... rather afraid to say that I just recently got in from a research trip of this country's guitar playing and I have not had time to draw up a full syllabus on paper. In my mind, though," he said, tapping the side of his head with the hand with the brace on it, "I know exactly what we will be doing."

He took a few steps towards the class, his spurs and chains clinking with every one. "What we will be doing in this class is a complete, total, and in depth study of the guitar. Not just how to play it, but its history, where it came from, where it is going, its soul, the very core of its being. You may even choose to make a guitar of your own as a final project. But today, we will start with something simple. We will start with introductions. I want you to go around and tell me your name, your year, where you are from, what experience you have with guitars, and what you hope to get from this class."

"Hi, my name's Miley Stewart and I'm a freshman." Miley gave a little wave. "I'm from Malibu and my family is big on music. My dad taught me how to play when I was little and I'm...decent."

"I'm hoping to get a chance to improve my skills and maybe learn some new techniques."

"I'm Shawn," he started. "Junior and from Seattle. I've been playing the guitar since I was about twelve. At the time I figured it might make me cool, now I just love to play."

"I'm Nadia Santos, a sophomore from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Technically, I started learning how to play late last winter, but I have two years of experience and I play guitar for Teal Dear."

"Yasutora Sado. Everyone calls me Chad, though. Sophomore. Grew up in Mexico, lived in Japan for a few years." He sighed. He hated introductions, tried to make it as streamlined as possible. "Been playing bass since I was little, self-taught." He considered Nadia's addendum. "Also in Teal Dear. I hope maybe I can finally get that reading sheet music thing down in this class. Maybe. If we're covering that..."

Chad licked his lips a little. He needed some water now.

"Pip Benadette, Sophomore. I've been playing guitar since I was... ten, maybe. I've taught someone how to play guitar," he said, nodding towards Nadia, "And play quite a bit in my spare time. I... guess I hope to learn how to be a better guitar player."

"My name is Kaoru Hitachiin," He bowed his head slightly with respect. "I'm a freshman from Tokyo, Japan and I've never played the guitar before... or any other instrument." He looks a little guilty, feeling out of place. "I guess the only way I won't learn something, is if I never came to class-so I know I'll get a lot out of this."

Nadia was finding it interesting to be in El Professor's class without being the TA, but not disagreeable. Less pressure, if nothing else.

And she was absolutely fascinated with the idea of building her own guitar.
