swerval_zero: (where the books live)
[personal profile] swerval_zero
Zero has decided to actually do library-related work today. Wonder of wonders. She opens up the library promptly and sets to work, after setting out a box of danishes from Jeff, God of Biscuits and a carafe of coffee behind the collections desk where no one but official library personnel can get to them. She'll be here all day.

((I, however, will probably not be on until late afternoon/eveningish, so I thought I'd better get this up now so people can use the library throughout the day.))

Let's talk culture. Cultures, sub cultures, counter cultures. How do these facets effect communication?

Ms. Sidle's classes are taking their field trip to the Body Farm.

Dr. Grissom's students have the option of coming as well.

Yep, just before first period as usual.

"Good morning, students. Please take care to stay dry as you go to and from classes today, as the sprinklers in the hallway of the Science Wing appear to be going off sporadically today, while Muppet rats perform 'Singin' in the Rain.' Anyone attempting to take electrical equipment through this area in the name of science today does so at his or her own risk. That will be all. Thank you, and go UConn."

Shop Class [3/22]

Today the shop classroom is a regular shop class room. Fancy that.

"As some of you might know, Ms. Gilmore-Danes is expecting a bundle of joy some time this summer. Today your assignment is to build a gift for her baby using the glittery tools she made for us. Please make sure that anything you make will be safe for a baby."

Josh was back at his desk, feet propped up like he'd never left.

"So, where were we?" he asked, smiling. "Congress, I think."

He popped an instructional video into the VCR.

"So, that's how a bill supposedly becomes law." He laughed. "Generally, there's less singing."

He pointed to what he had written on the board. "So, to summarize. You, as a Congressman write up a bill--well, technically, you tell a staffer to do it and they call the legislative affairs office who'll write it up for you--, then it gets kicked to committee. The committee votes on it and if they think it's good, it goes onto the floor calendar for debate. Then the entire House or Senate'll vote on it and the bill goes over to the other legislative body for the entire thing to happen again. Realistically, if it's a bill that has 'legs'--a chance to pass, not actually appendages--there will be a Senate and a House version going through the committee process at roughly the same time. The differences between the two versions will be worked out in a conference committee--members from both the House and Senate screaming at each other over pizza, and that final version goes back to the respective floors for passage. If they pass then--and once you've gone through a conference committee, passage is pretty much assured--it goes up to the White House to be signed or vetoed."

He grinned. "On Friday, we'll talk about how the process actually works."

He sat back down. "So what'd I miss while I was gone trying to negotiate world peace?" He paused. "Which didn't work, just in case you were wondering."
[identity profile] professor-lyman.livejournal.com
Josh was grinning as he waited for the US History class to arrive.

"So," he began, "I think we're still talking about the Civil War, but I've been gone for a month, so I could be wrong."

He looked around the class. "What did your substitutes cover?"
[identity profile] dr-tommy.livejournal.com
"I'd like you guys to spend today working on your essays- by the end of the class, you should have an outline ready at the very least. Please show that to me on your way out." Tommy says, before sitting down at his desk and playing a hacked version of The Sims involving a certain group of teenagers and a spaceship working on some sort of teacher-y thing.

Rita glared, looking for any evidence of homosexual cowboys.

"Work on your shorthand. I expect to see it on my desk on Tuesday," she said shortly before disappearing behind a newspaper.
[identity profile] imanaturalblond.livejournal.com
"Good afternoon," Rita said smoothly. "Today, please just share with the class what you did for homework. Handwavey is fine, omg."

She spared a glance towards one particular student. "Mr. Skywalker, you're obviously excused. Welcome back."

Wow. That almost looked like a genuine smile Rita was sporting, didn't it?
[identity profile] imanaturalblond.livejournal.com
Rita smiled.

"Pop quiz, of a sort," she said. "I'd like you to respond verbally to several different scenarios - these are actual questions that many journalists are asked before they're hired. There are no right answers, per se."

"Good morning! Please wait until I finish giving the assignments for today before going back to sleep.

Now, you are all in this class for a reason. For most of you the reason is probably "we have to in order to graduate." But there are reasons to study, math really. So, beginners? You guys are going to come up with three real world scenarios where you would use any kind of math and then write a problem for each one. I'll walk around and help you out with the problems.

Intermediate, you're going to read Flatland. Yes, it has twenty-two chapters. Each chapter is at most three pages long, so please don't panic ahead of time. After you read, you will find a question that did not get answered, for instance: "How does A. Square eat?". Then, you will come up with a creative answer to this question while tying in something from mathematics. So a possible answer for me would be: "A. Square needs to eat e times his total perimeter each day. He moves towards his food and absorbs into his perimeter.". I'm sure you guys can be more creative.

All right, have fun! Oh, and if you want your current grades, talk to me after class."

Today, the Shop is set up to look like a busy city street.

"Today, guys, you're going to practice driving in an environment that has a little more in the way of distractions. Also, now that you have a little bit of driving experience, we're going to start learning to park properly.

I want you to attempt parallel parking, parking on a hill, and backing in to a parking space."

Today was a dark brown pants suit. The bunny slippers are noticeable, but only if you're really looking.

"Cannibalism." The word dropped into the air of the classroom like a small gold watch falling onto a train track, just waiting to be smashed. Zhaan smiled, which might have looked a little frightening. "The consumption of matter from your own biological species. In this case, plants mulched with compost.

"Not that it's a bad idea. In fact, the nutrients released by dead plants decomposing are essential for a growing plant." She shifted, glad she'd worn her slippers again, as they were comfortable. "In much the same way humans garner nutrients from other animal matter, plants gather from other plants. In some cases, this can lead to a sort of hierarchy. Roses are eaten by weeds, weeds are eaten by bushes, bushes are eaten by trees." Not that the chain was truly that straight-forward. But discussing the moral relativism of any living being was always amusing.

"Some plants, however, are omnivorous, and thrive on animal matter as easily as they do on plant. These are the plants which will most likely survive long periods without one or the other." Unless you were a delvian, and starving. That, however, was a conversation for another time.

"As homework, I'd like you to compose a 100-word description of what your plant has gone through. Was it happy? Sad? Did you talk to it too much or too little, did you always remember to water it and give it light?" She folded her hands neatly and smiled. "Questions?"

"There are several characteristics of culture. In order to better understand culture, it is useful to closely examine its characteristics and their ramifications," Daniel began as his two students sat down.

"I've listed a few of them, and we're going to examine them."

He hands them each a sheet, on which is typed:

"1. Culture is an adaptive mechanism.
2. Culture is learned.
3. Culture is cumulative.
4. Cultures change.
5. People are not usually aware of their culture.
6. We do not know all of our own culture.
7. Culture gives us a range of permissible behavior patterns.
8. Cultures no longer exist in isolation."

"Take point 5, as an example. The way that we interact and do things in our everyday lives seems "natural" to us. We are unaware of our culture because we are so close to it and know it so well. For most people, it is as if their learned behavior was biologically inherited. It is usually only when they come into contact with people from another culture that they become aware that their patterns of behavior are not universal.

The common response in all societies to other cultures is to judge them in terms of the values and customs of their own familiar culture. This is ethnocentrism. Being fond of your own way of life and condescending or even hostile toward other cultures is normal for all people. Alien culture traits are often viewed as being not just different but inferior, less sensible, and even "unnatural." For example, European cultures strongly condemn other societies that practice polygamy and the eating of dogs--practices that Europeans generally consider to be immoral and offensive. Likewise, conservative Moslem societies, such as Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, consider European women highly immodest and immoral for going out in public without being chaperoned by a male relative and without their bodies covered from head to toe so as to prevent men from looking at them."

"Okay, guys, today is Pick Your Own Weapon with a twist. This time, I want half you to pick a weapon you hate, or at least don't like as well. If you can, pair with someone who likes it. I want you to work with it this period and think this weekend about what works for you and why, and what doesn't. Think about whether it's something you want to ultimately master or can live without. Then on Monday, same pairings, same weapons."

"Have at."

"Madainn mhath, a chlas," Camulus began class, leaning back in his chair and looking slightly less cranky than he had yesterday. "Today's lesson was meant to be on the story of King Iubne and his people." He paused before saying the word. "The leprechauns. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a suitable version of the story to the point where the mun is wondering if she imagined it so we'll be skipping that particular section of the Kings Cycle and move on. We're more or less finished of the Kings Cycle now and Monday we will begin the Ossianic or Fenian Cycle which is the mun's personal favourite. There won't be a quiz as we only covered two stories, but they will be on the next quiz."

Camulus stood and moved over to the board, writing up his usual notes that consisted of names and not much else.

"Alright, we begin the Ossianic Cycle. This series of stories focuses on the deeds and exploits of Fionn mac Cumhall and his Fianna. Despite the similarities, the Fianna are not named for their famous leader, whose name is often Anglisised as Finn McCool. The Fianna were a war band who worked for the king and lived off tithes willingly given by the people and consisted of two warring clans, Clan Bascna and Clan Morna. Fionn's father was the chief of Clan Morna and was killed by Clan Bascna when the enmity between the two clans erupted into war and most of Clan Morna was slaughtered.

"I want you all to read The High Deeds of Finn for Monday, the boyhood deeds as well as the Coming of Finn."
