Mathematics: All Classes: Wednesday 3.22.06 Period 1

"Good morning! Please wait until I finish giving the assignments for today before going back to sleep.

Now, you are all in this class for a reason. For most of you the reason is probably "we have to in order to graduate." But there are reasons to study, math really. So, beginners? You guys are going to come up with three real world scenarios where you would use any kind of math and then write a problem for each one. I'll walk around and help you out with the problems.

Intermediate, you're going to read Flatland. Yes, it has twenty-two chapters. Each chapter is at most three pages long, so please don't panic ahead of time. After you read, you will find a question that did not get answered, for instance: "How does A. Square eat?". Then, you will come up with a creative answer to this question while tying in something from mathematics. So a possible answer for me would be: "A. Square needs to eat e times his total perimeter each day. He moves towards his food and absorbs into his perimeter.". I'm sure you guys can be more creative.

All right, have fun! Oh, and if you want your current grades, talk to me after class."

After some thought, Victor wrote down the following:

1) I'm at the store and I buy a bag of Cheetos for 2.49, a frozen pizza for 11.99, and a six-pack of soda for 1.99. Also, I have a 15% off coupon for the pizza. So, what is the total?

11.99
2.49
+1.99
16.47

16.47
x0.15
2.47

16.47
-2.47
14.00

So, My total would be $14 even.

2)I'm in the kitchen, making Jello, and I need to figure out how many servings my pan will make. The pan is a rectangle that is ten inches long, eight inches wide, and four inches tall. The recipie, for some reason, says that each serving is twenty cubic inches.

10 x 8 x 4 = 320 inches

320 divided by 20 equals 16 servings total.

3) I'm walking in a park, and come to a map of the area. I see on the map that there are two paths I can take to get to where I'm going. An official one goes east for thirty feet, then north for forty, and someone drew on another one that starts and ends in the same place, but cuts across diagonally, and doesn't have any distance markings. I don't have a lot of time, so how can I figure out which path is quicker?

Since it's a right triangle, I just use the Pythagorean Theorem.

30 x 30 = 90
40 x 40 = 160

90+160= c^2 because the mun can't make the squared sign
250=c^2
50=c

So the diagonal path is 50 feet, which is less that 30+40, or 70 feet. I should take the diagonal path.

*massive facepalm*

Let's just pretend that the coupon is for 15% off the entire order, shall we? Oh my gosh, I can't believe I missed that.

And why am I so upset? I took AP Calculus my senior year. And yet I'm suprised that two plus two, yes, still equals four. *facepalm again*

*flap* Don't worry about it. I'm in Ap Calc BC and about half the class (self included) has trouble doing simple arithmetic. What are calculators for then?

Re: Beginners

[identity profile] anole-x.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
But when a giant EMI blast fries all calculators, what then, huh? Those who can do simple arithmetic will be royalty!. ;)

BC, huh? I'm not sure which one I took. I think it was AB.

More evidence for my theory that calc ruins the ability to do arithmetic! I took AP Calc BC, too, and really enjoyed it, but we all said at the end of it, "I can't do basic math anymore." I used to be able to do long division in my head with no problem, but in calc, I would do 2 + 3 = 6. *headdesk*

1) I'm brewing a potion that requires 1.0 mg of ground wolf's bane added regularly every 5 minutes until there is a final 1:4 ratio of wolf's bane and potion solvent in ml. If I am making 100 ml of potion, how much wolf's bane will I need, and how long will I have to spend adding it?

1/4 = x/100
x = 25 mg of wolf's bane
25 mg wolf's bane * 5 minutes = 125 minutes.

2) In my delivery business, I base my prices on package weight and distance to travel according to the formula of $2 + 2w + 1.5d, where w and d are in pounds and miles, respectively. Within Fandom, I usually drop the distance term, as it is often too minimal to bother with. However, last week, a gentleman asked me to deliver a 12-pound box of books to his brother's house 3 miles away. How much did I charge him?

$2 + (2*12 lb) +(1.5*3 mi) = $30.50.

3) When I'm out flying, It's very difficult to fly straight up, and much easier to rise at an angle. If I fly at 30 feet per minute at an angle of 45 degrees from the ground, how high am I after 5 minutes?

I've flown 30 ft/min * 5 min = 150 feet total. This makes the hypotenuse of the triangle. Since I'm flying at 45 degrees, both the distance I travel horizontally and the distance I ascend will be the same, so in a^2 + b^2 = c^2, a = b.
So, a^2 + a^2 = 150^2
2a^2 = 22500
a^2 = 11250
a = 11250^.5
a = 106 ft. (distance risen)

"When pirate ships take in loot, you have to separate it up into shares. And everybody gets a certain number of shares depending on their job on the ship."

A pirate crew consisting of 10 pirates total. One Captain, one First Mate, one cook, the beautiful Captain's Daughter, and the rest are general crew. Everybody gets one share just for being on the crew, the Captain gets 2 extra shares for being the Captain, The First Mate and the Cook both get 1 extra share for being the First Mate and the Cook. The beautiful Captain's Daughter gets an extra share because she saved the day during the battle. How many shares total must the loot be divided into?

"15"

"Once you know how many shares you're going to split the haul into. You need to actually do the splitting."

Bottles of rum are generally considered to be worth one quarter of a share. Weapons are worth half a share, unless they're very nice in which case they are one full share. Money is divided equally depending on the number of surviving crew members and the numbers of shares needed to cover everybody after the value of any non-cash loot is figured.

Your haul is 100 gold coins, 6 bottles of rum, 3 cutlasses, and 2 really nice cutlasses. Divy up the shares based on the information in the previous problem.

10 shares of 10 gold coins each
2 shares of 1 really nice cutlass each
3 shares of 1 cutlass and 2 bottles of rum each

Pippi thought really hard for a third quesiton...

1. You've got a mercenary company all splitting the same take from a job. There are twenty normal soldiers, but there's also three combat medics, two leuitenants, five heavy artilliary men, and a captain. The normal soldiers get one share. The leuitenants and the captain, being officers and having to make most of the decisions and plans, get two and three extra shares respectively. The combat medics and the artilliary men each get an extra share due to added weight/responsibillity. How many shares do you need to give out? No, I totally didn't just copy this problem from Pippi, really..

47

2. The black market is having a sale on assault weapons, 20% off. I buy what would be 4000$ worth of assault weapons. But because the guy who's selling them to me is an old friend of my dad's, he's giving me another 20% off.

How much am I paying for the weapons?

2560$

3. Based on the first problem, how much would the Captain get from a $500,000 take?

Rougly $55,556.
