Shop Class [3/22]

Today the shop classroom is a regular shop class room. Fancy that.

"As some of you might know, Ms. Gilmore-Danes is expecting a bundle of joy some time this summer. Today your assignment is to build a gift for her baby using the glittery tools she made for us. Please make sure that anything you make will be safe for a baby."

There was no reason at all for Nadia to be exhausted, so of course she wasn't. She was pretty cheerful about the idea of making a present for the baby, and figured that since she was essentially a baby for a few hours on Saturday, she might even know what a kid would like.

She gathered together some supplies and made a mobile.

Xander's got a laptop, unlimited access to wood and power tools, and a lot of motivation to find a project that doesn't let him think about anything but measuring once twice and cutting twice once. He starts working on a blanket chest - though he ruins his first attempt at a base by letting the router go wild, ending up with pieces that look less like they're arched, and more like something with really bad oral hygiene took a bite out of them. That's okay; there's more wood, and it's not like he was going to finish this one in one class-day anyhow.

He does take the sparkly ribbons off his chisel; he's really not in the mood for glitter today.

Duo gets a vaguely confused, vaguely horrified look on his face.

"Babies?" He says.

He sets down to think about what in the heck babies need, then what in the heck babies need that Duo could possible make for them that wouldn't endanger them, then gets an idea and gets to work.

"Babies like toy things (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v354/greenkattm/t_164.jpg), and animal things, right?" He asks, gesturing to his oddly shaped creations. He frowns at how boring just animals are, and makes another one in vaguely the shape of his Gundam (http://www.toonamiarsenal.com/rants/death.jpg). He grins.

"That's more like it!"

John's in class and he sets to work making a photo collage type thing. For the frame, he carves out a large piece of wood and sands it down. Then, he finds some card stock and and cuts out ovals, circles, squares and triangles in differing areas of the card stock.

Grabbing a different color of cardstock and some stencils, he stencils captions under each shape such as "1 month old", "2 months old" and so on and so forth until he reaches "12 months old."

He glues those labels under the shapes. Then, he finds a piece of glass big enough and cuts it down to fit the frame. In goes the class, then the card stock collage and then a sturdy piece of cardboard to seal it up.

There we go, a baby photo collage of the first year.

Ivanova pondered, then grinned as she remembered a certain toy that Beldin her father had given Polgara her when she was a baby. Some flailing about with wood and wires produced what looked like a rattle but didn't actually rattle, as the head was a twisted mass of wires.

"It only has one end," she explained, shrugging. "Trying to find the other one kept me quiet when I was a kid."

Kawalsky gathered together several large pieces of wood. The edges were high enough so that any toddler, once it started crawling, couldn't clamber over it easily. It was in the shape of a relatively large square. He sanded it back and painted it and put a gloss over it. Instant portable kid locator. Stick in the kid in at any early age and it can't get out.

Sam took a thick piece of wood, and cut it into large geometric shapes, sanding down the edges. She painted them bright, primary colors, using oil-based paint, so it wouldn't dissolve when chewed on. Then, she made some blocks, sanded down again, and painted bright numbers on them. Then she cut up some letters from the wood, then more sanding and painting.

She made a very large lucite box and painted it gold, then put all the shapes, numbers, and letters into it.

Stark decided that some little people would be a safe bet for baby toys.

After cutting out the shapes and sanding them down very carefully, he painted them in various colors. And because that's just the way glitter works, they tended to be a bit sparkly in places where the glitter had come off the tools.

One was purple and had four arms and might have looked vaguely like a crustacean.
One was small and green with pointy ears on the side of its head.
One was very blue.
One was grey.
A couple were kind of pinkish.
And one had tentacles on its head.

Nobody said people had to be human.
