[OOC: Yay! Project! A more detailed OOC explanation of the project will be coming late this afternoon. Just work on developing your own theory based on cartoons for now. Groups announced in OCD threads. Metaphor and EC will be posted later as well are finally up. Class Info Post.]

The Tick was at the front of the room as always. Lockheed was givig hopeful glances to Cameron from his normal book shelf.

"Hello, students! Today you will be starting on your big project for the semester. It's actually pretty simple. I'll split you into groups of two. Each group will figure out a theory - any theory - about how Justice works. Take Parker's Darwinist view of Justice, for example (well, don't take it, it's hers). Once you have a theory worked out, you'll be using any of these cartoons documentaries on my desk to showcase the theory."

"Pending Professor Mac's approval which I totally forgot to get beforehand, oops, I'd like to use the Danger Shop to showcase these theories at life size and see if they hold true. Your theories and how they apply to the documentaries are due two weeks from today."

"This project is all about teaming up with someone and compromising on your views of Justice, so get into your groups and get to talking!"

"This weeks metaphor is lightbulbs. And this week's extra credit is to devise a battlecry for your project partner!"

[OOC: Sorry, yesterday got busy]

"Good morning, class. Today, we'll be discussing Victor Hugo's 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame.'"

"Hunchback, or Notre-Dame de Paris as it's known in its native French, Victor Hugo's first full-length novel, was published in 1831, when Hugo was a mere 29 years old. I suppose that a long, somewhat Gothic ode to a catherdral would merit publication at such a young age back then. Try publishing anything of literary worth today and see where it gets you. Hugo would be stuck teaching French class somewhere."

"Discussion questions to consider:

1. Claude Frollo is not represented as being wholly evil, but instead as a man driven to darkness by disappointment and other factors. What aspects of his character make him an atypical villain?

2. In what ways does the cathedral itself act as a character in the novel?

3. La Esmeralda brings the Hunchback water while he's being tortured. Yet, he was the one who attacked her the previous night. Why do you believe she acted so compassionately?"

[OOC: understanding that reading the book would be a feat that not even I have undertaken, answering only one of the questions will get you the participation A. For your reference]

"Please read Poe's The Cask of Amontillado by next class and be prepared to take a quiz on every reading assignment you've had with me."

"Also, please read Virginia Woolf's Ms. Dalloway by April 10."

Miles passes out a sheet describing the upcoming final project.

"Please read one of the listed works..."

The List )

"...and prepare a 100-word essay on some aspect of the novel or story. It will be due on April 24th."

Angela gets to the library early (for her) and (mostly) refreshed.

Of course, the enormous coffee she's carrying might help explain why she seems refreshed.

She's brought in some donuts from Jeff, God of Biscuits to share with the other aides, and maybe any friends who might stop by. She hopes she'll get to talk to the new librarian some more as well.

The library is open for all your bookish needs.

Miles is slightly hungover. Do not poke happy!fun!writer.

"Good morning, class. I apologize that I neglected to assign a reading for this week. Obviously, that leaves us with two hours and not a lot to talk about. For the first part of the class, I want to hear about what your thoughts on poetry in general are... What is poetry? What does it mean to you? What do you want to get out of this class? It'll help me refocus my efforts a bit here."

"Don't forget that your modern lyrics presentations are due next week. We'll be having a special guest speaker, so everybody on their best behavior, okay?"

"Now, for your end of term project. I want you to compose one of the following poetry types --

Shakespearean sonnet
Sestina

Be sure to use an example of metaphor and simile each. This will be due on April 25th."

Like yesterday, there is a note pinned to the door:

Doesn't seem fair that yesterday's class got the day off and you guys not. Be prepared for tomorrow's field trip. There will be no class on Thursday. Sign the roll sheet and scram.

Josh was sitting behind his desk for all the world like he hadn't been gone for almost a month.

He gave the Campaigning class a welcoming grin when they arrived.

"Hey all," he said, checking his syllabus. "I think we're supposed to be talking about political consultants and other people you hire. It's pretty easy. Hire Bruno Gianelli. It'll cost your soul, but he's a steal at that kind of price."

He kicked his feet onto his desk. "What'd I miss?" He looked around the room. "And, um, Rory--how many days until the election?"

Dream appears lost in thought as he leads the classes today.

Classics: "I am certain you have now studied Latin enough to hold a basic discussion. Mr. Anders, Ms. Frasier, please do so. Mr. Connor, as TA you have the honor of speaking to me. You may discuss whatever you wish, within the limits of your vocabulary."

Foreign Lit: "We have studied haiku and a short story by Haruki Murakami. Obviously, this barely scratches the surface of the world of Japanese literature. In class today, please select a Japanese author and handwave share some information about them with the class."

"You all have a quiz on Thursday."

201--2nd period

The Epideictic is the rhetorical form of praise or blame, and in modern times has often served to incorporate humor. Write me up a speech that's going to make me laugh...don't put it off. Not all of you are funny.

301--3rd period

Maia, since it's only you left...I can cover everything for the week in 2 days of one on one. Do you care if I make our class a Moday Wednesday affair?

The announcements today come, as usual, shortly before first period.

"Good morning. All students please note that betting pools on the outcome of the NCAA basketball tournament are generally frowned upon -- no, Alpha, I told you to put down UConn for that bracket, no, the women's tournament, I don't care what the hamster thinks!"

There's an embarrassed pause.

"In addition, the drinking fountains in the school hallways appear to be dispensing Hawaiian Punch today instead of water. Any attempts to blame incidents of aggression on this will be summarily dismissed as invalid. Thank you, and have a heavily-sugared day."

Sex Cultures: 6th Period

Grissom greets the class with a nice, long lecture on polyamorous relationship structures and cupcakes.

"Let's keep our discussion away from the validity of the arrangement, and instead reflect on the legal issues that arise. How do you feel about these issues, and if you were in charge of drafting legal policy, what would that look like in this case?"

Homework: "Find an example of a society or culture that incorporates polyamory and bring it to class.

Also, you're welcome to join the field trip tomorrow to the Body Farm although even I can't come up with a logical reason why the Sex class would come, save for an overall spirit of inclusion. if you so desire, although it is not mandatory. Don't wear anything you're particularly attached to, believe me."

Rita smiled. "Today, an easy assignment. Invent a shorthand, or use one you've established, and take notes on something unusual you see. And naturally, keep the notes."

Business Classes

Business Law - Period 1

"This week we start our exciting unit on Contracts," Lorelai says with a grin.

"A contract is a "promise" or an "agreement" that is enforced or recognized by the law. In the civil law, contracts are considered to be part of the general law of obligations. This article describes the law relating to contracts in common law jurisdictions."

Cut for Really Long <s>Wiki</s> Lecture )

Discussion Question: What kind of contracts have you entered into or seen other people enter in to?

Human Resource Management - Period Six

"Still going off syllabus, this week we're going to cover Labor Law," Lorelai says.

"Labour law or employment law is the body of laws, administrative rulings, and precedents which addresses the legal rights of, and restrictions on, workers and their organisations. As such, it mediates many aspects of the relationship between trade unions, employers and employees. In some countries (such as Canada), employment laws related to unionised workplaces are differentiated from those relating to particular individuals. In most countries however, no such distinction is made."

Cut for Long <s>Wiki</s> Lecture )

Discussion Question: "Do you think unions make things better or worse by picketing, striking and boycotting?"
[identity profile] the-ascended.livejournal.com
"Today we're talking about Ancient Egpytian religion." Daniel clearly looks and sounds thrilled at this.

"Religion guided every aspect of Egyptian life. Egyptian religion was based on polytheism, or the worship of many deities, except for during the reign of Akenaton. The Egyptians had as many as 2000 gods and goddesses. Some, such as Amun, were worshipped throughout the whole country, while others had only a local following. Often gods and goddesses were represented as part human and part animal.

The Egyptian "Book of the Dead" contains the major ideas and beliefs in the ancient Egyptian religion. Because their religion stressed an afterlife, Egyptians devoted much time and wealth to preparing for survival in the next world.

Which gods do you know about? Or, what examples of religion in everyday life do you know?

Homework tonight is to pick a god and write about him or her. A hundred words or so."
[identity profile] godinakilt.livejournal.com
Camulus seems cranky today. Crankier than usual. "Today we will be talking about the story that no bard could tell without a book. The Dream of Rhonabwy. Exceedingly simple in basic plot. The part that make it impossible to memorise is the minute level of detail involved in all the trappings and regalia of the various knights who appear. There are two distinct layers of story involved, one distinctly Welsh and the other closer to the continental romantic tradition. Any questions or thoughts on the reading?"

[[. . . sorry for the late and the short.]]

Methos lectures on Edward III and his claim to the French throne through his mother (poetically known as the "She-Wolf of France"). The French claimed that French law dictated that inheritance couldn't be passed through the female line. Edward claimed that he had a lot of soliders who would be willing to kick their asses. This leads to warfare, broken up by interludes of devistating plague.
