Sex Cultures: 6th Period

Grissom greets the class with a nice, long lecture on polyamorous relationship structures ~~and cupcakes.~~

"Let's keep our discussion away from the validity of the arrangement, and instead reflect on the legal issues that arise. How do you feel about these issues, and if you were in charge of drafting legal policy, what would that look like in this case?"

Homework: "Find an example of a society or culture that incorporates polyamory and bring it to class.

Also, you're welcome to join the field trip tomorrow to the Body Farm ~~although even I can't come up with a logical reason why the Sex class would come, save for an overall spirit of inclusion.~~ if you so desire, although it is not mandatory. Don't wear anything you're particularly attached to, believe me."

Phoebe signs in and takes notes on the lecture.

Bel signed in and took a seat by Phoebe, unable to not grin about the topic. He could live with the idea of a harem (nevermind that that wasn't the definition of polyamory).

"Marriage laws here are based on the values of a particular religion," he pointed out. "In a country that supposedly values religious freedom, that's pretty stupid."

"Cole has a point. There are several religions that have allowances for polyamory."

Cole can have a harem if she can have one, too.

Cally looks over the information and thinks long and hard.

"Huh," is about as thoughtful as she gets. Possibly because her mind just went to a dirty-bad-wrong place.

That's pretty much Allie's reaction too.

Except because none of this has ever crossed her mind, not because she went to a dirty-bad-wrong place.

Anders just buries his face in his hands to cover up the fact that it's really, really red.

His mind might just be in the same dirty-bad-wrong place as Cally's.

Paige signed in ~~while the mun wondered if Grissom mun read her thread with the Weasley Twins last night~~

She listened carefully to the lecture noting lots of nots then considered how she'd handle something like this.

"I guess you'd have to deal with everything on a case by case basic really wouldn't you? I mean situtaions are different for different people and I guess it would depend on how people were involved."

Alanna signed in and took notes, trying to block all thoughts out of her head. Her bag might have been snickering a little.

Grissom's researching something on his laptop, and no, you can't see.

[ooc: Will have slowtime in 20 minutes for class.]

She raps her knuckles on the doorframe before coming in, bringing lunch with her. "Hey."

"Hi," he smiles softly, quickly getting up to clear off a chair for her to sit on. "How are you feeling?"

"Slightly guilty for playing hooky from class, but I don't think my students will complain." She takes a seat, giving him a smile. "And much better from this morning."

Gil shrugs. He doesn't think she has anything to feel guilty for whatsoever.

"I'm glad. I, you know..." Insert your word for 'worry' here.

"I know."

They eat for a few minutes (he has a roast beef sandwich, she has a bowl of steamed rice) before Sara speaks again.

"They've offered me a good contract. And an apartment."

He puts down his bottle of water, wipes his mouth carefully, and looks at her with a open gaze of warm honesty.

"What do you want to do?"

"I want to take it," she says with a sigh. "Classes are running me down and I don't think I could give the students the attention they deserve. We've covered 90% of the major topics I intended to this semester, so I believe I can justify giving grades."

She reaches for his hand, gripping it.

He returns the pressure, and runs a thumb over her knuckles.

"Then that's what we'll do," he says quietly but firmly. "Your health and happiness come first, Sara. We'll see if a commute for me from off-island is logical for the rest of the semester, and if not... I'll call up some friends. Someone must have some spare grant money for me somewhere. We'll work it out."

"Did I tell you how much Mike and I got for the beach property and hotel? Honestly, Gil--neither of us will have to worry about money for a good long time."

She sighs, feeling very relieved. "I still want to do the field trip tomorrow, but afterwards, I'll give the deans and principal notice."

"Sara, I invested in real estate before the property boom in Vegas. Money is the least of my concerns..."

He looks down at his sandwich, toying at the crust with a finger for a second.

"This is what you want, right? I mean, the baby, and everything. You don't have to do this for me, if it's not... what you want for your life. Our life. Your... future."

"I never envisioned this," she says quietly, taking his hand. "I'm hardly a domestic diva. My life is going in an unanticipated direction, but I don't think that's a bad thing. And...I know we can do right by our child, far better than what we had when we were growing up. I know that."

She takes a long drink of her decaf iced tea. "This is what I want to do. I'll be getting back to physics, which was my first academic love. I won't be as stressed by not teaching classes. And the place they've offered is more than big enough for us. All of us."

"Okay," he nods his head. "Okay. I'm... glad," he says with a soft twitch of his lips.

"I wouldn't leave you to do this on your own, Sara. Ever. It's not a possibility. That's not why I want... you need to know that."

"I do know that, Gil. And trust me--if I thought otherwise, I would've already kicked your ass. Not to mention what the Vegas crew would do afterwards." She chuckles, kissing his cheek.

"Depending on how things go, we may have to do separate moves." She sighs at the thought.

"They'd never find my body," he chuckles with her, lips curving up into a smile at her kiss.

"I'm not okay with you being alone in a new town by yourself. Not because you can't take care of yourself, but because I'd give myself an ulcer and a five hundred dollar cell phone bill. I'll commute, I'll buy a car, take a plane, ride a camel..."

She bursts out laughing. "Okay, okay, point taken. It looks like Tropolis is about 45 minutes from here or so. That's a reasonable commuting distance, I think."

"Well, we'll see how you're feeling and everything else. I don't want you to be under any more stress than necessary. You need to gain some weight, and if you're still sick half of every day and worried about everything else... we'll figure it out."

Her hand still lingering in his, he squeezes her fingers softly. "How's that rice?"

"Staying down, which makes it my new favorite food," she says dryly.

"I'll send in the paperwork to the publishing company and my new partners--I won't be the only author, of course. And I'll schedule a meeting with the principal. I guess I should give finals next week--damn my students are going to be angry. I'll tell them tomorrow."

"They'll understand. How many teachers have disappeared without notice around here? At least you have a more than legitimate reason. You have an embryo with a beating heart growing inside of you. By April she'll have fingers," he says with a soft sigh. "That's a lot of work."

"She? Do you know something I don't?" A gentle, teasing smile.

He gives her a mock scowl.

"I feel uncomfortable referring to the baby as 'it' constantly. And it's too soon to know the gender, whether we want to know or not. So I went with the basic system of referring to a ship or other vessel."

"I was just teasing, Gil." Another kiss to his cheek and she begins cleaning up their refuse.

"I'll miss this place, in a way."

"This office has had its share of good memories," he smiles.

"The town, too. It's been an extraordinary experience."

"Very much so." Her ring glints in the lighting in the office.

"I'll see you at home, okay?"

"Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home."

He leans into her, resting his hand on the small of her back for a moment as he kisses her forehead. "Bye."
