Upon entering the classroom, you will find that Mac is buried under a mess of wires from the main console that he is apparently trying to fix.

On the blackboard is today's assignment:

"Please write a 100 word essay identifying some of the unique uses and qualities of duct tape."

[OOC: Feel free to use the regular shop equipment to work on any personal projects you might have when you are done with your essay]

"Good afternoon, everyone. Please turn in your homework by the end of class."

"Today, we're going to begin examining the use of blood spatter analysis. Anyone with a weak stomach needs to take a seat next to a garbage can."

She passes around a series of photographs.

There are hundreds of methods and analytical techniques used in the forensic laboratory. While many of these methods are common biological, immunological, biochemical, or microscopic tests used in scientific research, others are unique to the forensic field. Forensic analysis is not only concerned with recognizing and identifying unknown substances, it is also actively used in the complete reconstruction of crime scene events and conditions.

One technique used by crime scene investigators is the analysis of stains left by blood shed at a scene. Bloodstain pattern analysis is a powerful forensic tool used in crime scene investigations. If the investigator understands the dynamics of an altercation, how blood be haves when it exits the body, and how it reacts when it contacts a surface, then an attempt can be made to understand what happened and to determine if a crime occurred. The trained forensic scientist looks at the patterns made by shed blood and tries to determine what did and/or did not happen. Interpreting the bloodstain patterns involves physical measurement of blood droplets, pattern recognition using known photographs or experiments, the use of trigonometry, and knowledge of the physics of motion.

Together with other types of evidence from the crime scene (such as fingerprints, tool mark and footprint impressions, DNA evidence, chemical analysis, etc.) the forensic investigator pieces together the puzzle to re-create a logical sequence of events, which is supported by crime scene evidence. Collecting and documenting the evidence correctly is another skill just as important as interpreting evidence. Bloodstains cannot always be carried back to the lab, so care in documenting the scene is of utmost importance. Photographs and detailed sketches drawn to scale are invaluable tools that help piece together the puzzle.

While sitting absolutely still in her office, Eighth contemplates the latest war on a neighboring galaxy and idly misses the Asgard challenge. Her coffee is steadily getting colder as she continues to analyze the reports coming in from her brethren. Still as stone, she loses herself into the connection with her army, so very far away. And for a fleeting second, she misses Fifth. It’s gone before she recognizes the human emotion.

Zero, still yawning, opens up the library. She tacks a sign on the door, which reads:

Winifred Burkle, please report to the library for your corrected library card.

Then she settles in behind the desk, mp3 sunglasses firmly in place to conceal that she is, in fact, napping. Come on in, folks. She'll be here allllll day.

The P.A. crackles to life.

"Mister Dornez and associates, I'd like to point out that I still have a golf cart sitting in my office. But for the rest of the school, here are todays announcements.

One, there will be a school club fair on friday. School Club presidents may wish to contact Miss Jaye Tyler. Or perhaps contact Mister Kennedy, and I'm sure the message will be passed on swiftly.

Two, if the owner of the blue box in the park would please check on their vehicle, I believe they left their lights on." There is some quiet chuckling before the announcements continue.

"Three, I would be most grateful if Mister Crichton and Miss Veruca Cally would report to my office today.

That will be all. Please continue to function normally, and do not let your fluid levels influence you into making poor choices."

Sociology of Violence

Grissom gives a short lecture on gender-based violence as an International problem.

"Although aide groups, and even governments, are working on this issue internationally - providing medical care, encouraging education and research, and lobbying nations where gender-based violence needs to be addressed in a different manner, it is still a pressing, dire issue."

"My question to you is this - should there be International laws that specifically prohibit gender-based violence? Should certain crimes be given harsher sentences in the courts as a deterrent? Would it be helpful to have these type of laws at all? Is treating women differently an insult in and of itself?"

"I know some of you come from... places, in which gender is not the same issue as it is here on Earth. If that is the case, please feel free to speak in generalities and refer to oppressed groups as a whole. We will be moving on to that type of topic next class."

Homework: Read Legacy of Hate:
a short history of ethnic, religious, and racial prejudice in America
by M.E. Sharpe for Monday. It's only 328 pages, you should have no problems finishing that in a prompt manner.

Sociology of the Paranormal

Grissom gives a lecture that relates to evaluating paranormal claims, and then has the students push the desks into a rather sloppy circle formation.

"Okay, now to see if you were paying attention, I'd like each of you to select one 'myth' I outlined in the lecture, and share your thoughts on it.'

Quick Lecture Outline )

"There will be some doubling-up, due to the numbers of the class."

Homework: I'd like you to interview someone from Fandom about a paranormal experience they have encountered. You must determine the who, what, where, and when, as well as ask them three additional questions. And remember, extensions are easily granted to those who offer cookies. This is due on Monday, and if you get stuck, remember, I can always help arrange an interview for you.

Greetings and Salutations, class. Now that your hands are throughly exhausted from taking notes on yesterday's lecture, I'm going to make you talk until your jaw is tired as well.

For your homework, due next Tuesday but turned in to this thread, I'd like you to comment in at least 100 words on some aspect of Egyptian or Cretan civilisation. Bonus points for comparing something between the two.

[[OCD comment threads are up. Comment away!]]

Josh stopped his totally grown-up coloring project when his US government class came into the room. Putting the maps of Montana away, he stood up and reached for his notes.

"I could tell from the glazed looks on your faces--and in the case of Clarence, a certain degree of drooling--that you might not have picked up just how important the work of Enlightenment philosophers was to the thinking of the men who eventually founded the modern democracy of the United States."

"Let's back it up a bit. The 1500s and the first half of the 1600s in Europe were pretty much non-stop religious wars. After the political situation stabilized, there was a growing thought that maybe listening to only the churches--which were still very busy damning the other side to hell for their beliefs--to discover and understand, you know, all human knowledge was a bit of a bad idea. The Enlightenment began as a belief in a rational, orderly and comprehensible universe. And then the philosophers began wondering if the universe could be comprehensible, why couldn't governments make sense, too?"

He continued talking about the Enlightenment for another half-hour.

Finally he looked up from his notes. "Everyone still awake? Or mostly? Great. In John Locke's Second Treatise on Government, he claims that by the 'law of nature', every individual has the right to punish those who cause wrongful injury to their life, liberty or property." He looked up. "This might sound terribly familiar for any of you who have ever heard the line in the Declaration of Independence that claims, among other self-evident truths, our unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

He put his hands on his desk and looked around the room. "My question to you is, why do you think that Jefferson changed 'property' to 'pursuit of happiness' in the Declaration?"

He looked around. "Your homework for today is to find a copy of the Declaration of Independence and read it. Understanding it would be a bonus, but reading it is required. See you all on Friday, where we will be talking about the Declaration in excruciating detail."

Better mood, same Doctor.

"Righto, so, the civil rights movement. I hope you all did a bit of research for this, as today, we're going to discuss and debate, WITH EACH OTHER, comparative ways of advancement during this period. The issue I posed to you was synopsised in two men, and while it's never exactly this simple, the fundamental question remains. Which works better: non-violent civil disobedience or an eye for an eye?

"You're probably wondering what this has to do with Quantum Physics. As usual. I'd like to remind you that this question echoes in eternity in almost every place in space and time that faces great social change. It's important for you to understand it, not only if you're to be a traveller, but also to understand your own personal motivations...because no culture seems to be without this problem.

"So, tell me, tell each other--who was more successful? Malcolm or Martin? And if neither or only one of them had been assassinated...how would history have changed?"

He smiles a little. "Your homework for next week, by the way, is to research one woman and one man who were key to the subject area you're interested in. Tell me why you chose them and what they did. Women might be harder to find, but if you don't...your grade will suffer for it. And Jack, I need to see you after class."

Jamestown and the Puritans. Shame about the hats. )

He put his papers down. "Massachusetts and Virginia will soon expand into more English colonies up and down the Atlantic Coast--but we'll be talking about them next week. For today, I want you to tell me if you'd rather have been a colonist in Virginia or Massachusetts--malaria and slavery or religious intolerance and ridiculously cold winters? Both are pretty much huge improvements over the life you would be having as someone not in the aristocracy in Europe, though."

Rita looked a bit less than chipper as she greeted her weeeeeetiny class.

“Today, I pose simply this: Investigative journalism. What is it? How does the concept work?

You’ll discuss this in depth today, and if you still have questions at the end of the class, you may ask me then. Your assignment this week is to write an investigative article on something on campus that you find suspicious or warranting your attention. And I don’t want to see three articles on the cafeteria food.”

She almost smiled. “Go on. Discuss.”

Rita sat on the edge of her desk, looking grumpy.

"Boys and girls, if you haven't turned in your headlines, please do so.

Rita scowled at the class.

“Public knowledge. What is it? Well, as one might infer, it’s knowledge that the public has. Something widely known, and not considered secret.”

She crossed her legs, and took a sip of coffee. “Now, that can be somewhat subjective. How do we decide what is publc knowledge? Do you have to be sworn to confidentiality in order to know that what you have been told is a secret?”

She waved at them. “Discuss.”

Walter was ready. He'd cleared it with Smith to come by after hours and remove the golf cart. He was going to do exactly that.

However, per Victor's plan, the golf cart wasn't going as far as Smith might have intended.

Now all he needed was his cohorts.

Justin snivels as he enters the class room, he's got a bunch of tissues in one hand and his grade book in the other, "Good day class, excuse my sickness. I looked over your potted plants, the ones you left here anyways, and each and everyone of you did a wonderful job! Today there won't be much because of my underlying condition right now."

He writes the following on the board: Write a short story with anything to do with Gardening. Afterwards, he takes a seat near the greenhouse, trying his best not to infect the students. He should go see Greg right now but he has to teach today atleast.

When the students stumble walk into the classroom, they will see a stack of brightly coloured books, two stacks of handouts, and a pile of tapes. Yes, as in audio tapes. Camulus isn't up on CDs yet, apparently.

"Guten tag. Madainn mhath, a chlas. Please take one of each before you take your seat." He waits until everyone has their material before explaining. "Welcome to the second day of our brief unit on Scots Gaelic. I have given you a few things to build your vocabulary and introduce you to pronunciation. Next class I'll have you use that vocabulary for good in a sentence. Several of them, actually.

"Now. The first is a children's sticker book designed to build simple vocab. These are yours to keep. Don't place the stickers anywhere inappropriate.

"The second is a pair of handouts with the vocabulary we will be using. The tape is simply a pronunciation guide for you. Please repeat the words - aloud - with their meanings when you are studying - and yes, I will be giving you a quiz soon.

"Let's go over them, shall we?"

The rest of the lesson is spent with Camulus saying each word and having the class repeat them back to him, correcting pronunciation and giving a bit of etymology. He finishes by asking them the final question on the handout, "De an t-ainm a th'ort?"

"The correct form of the answer would be "'Se Camulus an t-ainm a th'orm" - It is Camulus the name that is on me. 'Ort' (orscht) and 'orm' (oh-rum) are prepositional pronouns formed by combining or slurring the preposition 'oir' - on - with the personal pronouns of 'thu' and 'mi' - 'you' (singular) and 'me'" He looks around. "Your turn. De an t-ainm a th'ort?"

"Okay, guys, so last time? We watched 'The Craft.'" Jenny grinned. "It's not one of my favorite movies, but it does exemplify one of the modern stereotypes of witches. This week we're not so much talking about theory of magic, but how the world perceives people with magical abilities. We can get some good theory out of it too, depending on how the discussion goes. Unfortunately, with perception? Not so many movies about demons or seers to use as examples, or we'd do more than one movie." We are not watching My Demon Lover in class. Ever.

So. A few things that you guys brought up that we can discuss? Written on the board."

On the board -
How do you feel about the portrayal of witchcraft as evil? Any of you guys run into a witch using black magic?
Which stereotype in the movie bothered you the most? Why?
Covens? What kind of ideas did you get about them from this movie?
Feel like trashing the movie? Go for it.
Any other questions on the movie? Ask them.

OOC: Due to the occasional intrusion of RL for me and for everyone else, I'm going to change my posting policy a bit. I'm leaving each class open the entire week for comments, not just 'til the next class session. Hopefully this will make things easier all around. I'll close them up when absentee reports are due in at the office. Please let me know if you have any questions on this.

OCD comment threads coming soon are finished, so comment away.
