301--InterComm 3rd period

"So both sender and receiver have an assumed goal of wanting to accurately percieve the message. Let's talk about what happens when there is interferance. Something external that impedes the message. It could be time, distance, technology...it could be foreign influences like alcohol or noise...lots of stuff. How do we work around it? Do we modify the message? Do we look for it to get resent, or do we judge based upon what we are given?

And who has ever played 'Telephone?"

These few students will begin with a message. Please change it as you see fit and pass it on. I'd like to see how much we can change these things from their original.

401--Advanced 5th period

We've looked at images of power. I'm really pleased with what you guys came up with. Now...power is ubiquitous and constant. We face it every day. In 301 we talked about hegemony and power structures in S/M/R...who has it, who wants it. What do you think about power? Nothing trite, let's really tear into it. Talk to each other. Learn from each other. I'll jump in when needed. ~~or when I have a sec online, I mean.~~

Maia signed in and looked curiously at C.J. She had never played this game before. Raising her hand she looked a little worried, "Um C.J. I- well I've never played this before...we have to call someone.."

"It's a simple message transferrance game, Maia. You will tell somone something and tell them to pass it on. They do..and after a few passes the message changes. I'll tell you why tomorrow. It can be anything at all...just a message. The more complex it is, the more it will change."

Maia nodded thoughtfully "It can be any message we want to give them?" She smiled and then nodded again. "I like that."

Shep leans over and says to Maia, "I whisper something to you like, 'Principal Smith has a golf cart on his desk.' Then you whisper it to someone else. Then they whisper it to someone else. etc, etc. The way I learned it you could only ask the person to repeat it once if you couldn't understand what they said. After that you had to make your best guess and pass it on.

So you might hear 'Prince Smith has a small cart on his desk.' The person you say it to might hear you say 'Prince Smith had a bald fart on his desk', etc, etc..."

Maia started laughing "I like that so in the end you don't have a clue what was said." She started to laugh harder "bald fart."

"Yeah, it's the idea that small changes in pronounciation result in big changes in meaning."

Maia grinned happily thinking of who she wanted to call.

Shep rolls his eyes. He'd played 'telephone' in grade school. He was the one who always gummed it up on purpose.

"Got an idea, Shep~~baby~~?"

"Several... though it's possible that most of them will get me detention, so..." He shrugs innocently.

"Not from me...just be smart about it. You have no control over how it changes, right?" She smiles, in no way encouraging him to get in trouble.

"Okay fine, let's start with, 'It's not smart to go skinny dipping in the school pool'. The rhyme should screw someone up but good. Not to mention 's's get dropped all over the place when sound levels are low." It's entirely possible that Shep knows way more about speech and hearing than most people would suspect.

"What a great message Shep. You're such a...helper." She turns around quickly, but her shoulders shake with laughter.

"Does this mean I'm forgiven for saying that I'm in favor of communication earlier this week?"

"Forgiven? Eh, ok. I'm in favor of it, myself."

Shep smiles endearingly.

Togusa slumped down in his seat. He had been in the great phone call prank, and plus he dealt with online messages all the time.

"Togusa, do you understand how i explained it to Maia? Or would you like clarification?"

Togusa shook his head. "I understand it.'

[OOC: Togusa's mun was called away to that irritating place called RL yesterday.]

Boone hadn't played 'telephone' in years. If he remembered correctly, he'd always been the kid in the middle who helped screw up the message.

He wondered if he should tell CJ this.

"Whatcha got for amessage, Boone?"

Jack comes stumbling in fifteen minuts late. He has coffee and chocolate (http://www.godiva.com/platinum/mousse.aspx).

"I know, I know, my head on a platter, my ass on a plate."

"Jack...this is getting real old, real fast. Straighten up or I'm pulling you into class in your underpants and makig you stay the whole time. Got me?"

"You did that already. Remember? Last Thursday? Or was it Friday? And for the last time, I don't so this on purpose."

"Keep pushing me Jack. See how long I treat you well."

[[if you start coming on time I'll be soooo sad]]

"This is well? You sent me to my doom and then dragged me through my dorms in my underwear while yelling. That made the radio by the way."

[Oh dude, there's no chance he's gonna be on time. It's too much fun being late!]

"I know it made the radio, Jack. Trust me when I say this is as good as it gets. Keep it up and you'll wish you hadn't."

[[glees!]]

"You want me to come in early tomorrow?"

[Jack's completely screwed.]

"Yes, Jack. Tomorrow I'd be happy if you could come in during 201. Help me set up some stuff. Be here...I'll cut you some slack...10 minutes early? Yeah. With coffee."

"I'll even set my alarm a half an hour early just to make sure."

[He's so very fucked. And? I must sleep.]

"Good, Jack. Don't let me down."

"Wouln't dream of it."

Allie looks around for someone to talk to.

Lindsey, also in need of someone to talk to, turned to Allie.

"Uh, so, thoughts on power? I guess first off it's something we all want, right? Nobody wants to be the one somebody else has power over. We might not want the responsibilities that come with it, but we all definitely want some sort of power."

"At the very least, we all tend to what power over our own lives," Elizabeth adds ~~late~~.

Allie shrugged. "I don't know. I never really wanted power. When you've got power, you have increased responsibility."

Lily adds great insight to the discussion.

Who gave you the message? What was it?

Who are you passing it to? How's it changed?

I gave a message to Pippi on her Voicemail (http://www.livejournal.com/users/strongestgirl/975.html?thread=8911#t8911) It said "The geese laid a golden egg at midnight. WWWHHHHAAAAA ha WWWHHHAAA ha"

I passed it onto Charlie (http://www.livejournal.com/users/kawalsky/732.html?thread=291804#t291804) and changed "geese" to "golden goose".
