"I've split you into two groups by RNG," Max announced. "You will get with your group, grab all your equipment, and begin your run. One group will go that way," Max pointed to his left, "and the other group will go the other way," he pointed to his right. "Follow the course marked by the red flags. When If your group encounters another combat force then split into pairs and engage them. Remember, your job is to keep your squad mates covered."

"You may notice that I've assigned one of my TAs to each group. They'll act as your squad leaders, so do as they say." He shot them both hard looks. The sort that said 'don't screw this up'.

"In case it wasn't clear, today will mark the final evaluation of your skills as regular infantry. Next week there will be no class, and in two weeks we'll begin our discussion of irregular infantry."

"Get to it."

And with that he trotted off, heading in neither of his indicated directions.

(I know there aren't enough for pairs for everyone, but I'm betting on some people going hand-wavey. If you need a partner let me know in the OOC thread and I'll figure something out!)

The usual selection of pastries and coffee greeted the class as they arrived. For his part Rick looked vaguely hung over as he clutched a cup of coffee in his hands.

"I hop you all had a good weekend," Rick began. "And that none of you had to find out that your mother slept with the Vice-Principal." He was in a sharing the trauma kind of mood today.

"So, crime and mystery," he said after giving the class a moment to shake that mental image from their minds. "Now as you might have guessed from the fact I write it, and because I told you in the first class, this is my absolute favourite genre of all time, because it's all about people, and unless you've got a truly terrible story on your hands, it all makes sense. Especially when it involves murder.

"In fiction, even the most seemingly senseless and arbitrary crime means something, has a motive, serves a purpose, even if it's only as a red herring. It has to, for the 'Aha!' moment. Which is the point in the story when all the pieces fall into place and your plucky girl detective, nosy old lady, gentleman sleuth, or hard-bitten P.I., unravels the mystery and you can go back through the book and pick up on the clues leading to it."

As if he was making up for last week's silence, Rick continued on for a while, explaining and expanding on many of the tropes used in the genre.

"Now, speaking of 'Aha!' moments," Rick said after he wound up. "Tell me if you had one in the book you read for this."

Gabrielle had woken up this morning with the vivid sensation that there was a story she had to write, and it was right there just waiting to be written down.

And then she'd gotten dressed, and the sensation had just disappeared. Poof. Like a bit of pocket lint or dandelion fluff or any semblance of an uneventful shopping day when Salmoneus was around.

Bound and determined to try anyway, Gabrielle was perched on her chair behind the library front desk, head propped up on her hand and slight frustrated scowl in full effect as she stared at the blank scroll in front of her.

If she could've gotten up and physically chased that story idea down, she'd have done that. She was kind of hoping it'd happen, this being Fandom and all, but.

Fred had the class meet in the Danger Shop again today.

"So, here's the deal," Fred said. "Today's the first of the explorations into various real world options you have for using these violence skills. We're gonna have practical exercises. So be prepared to freak the hell out. And dress appropriately."

He laughed.

"Today, we're covering something that's often the poor job of underpaid rent-a-cops. Bodyguarding. Simply put, your duty is to protect somebody from getting hurt. Now, this usually means that they have reason to think their life is in danger. Whether it's a pop star, an actor, or a politician, you pretty much become their own special thug. You make sure the wrong people can't get near them, and make the persistent idiots stop being persistent. Also, yeah, you might have to take a bullet if you're feeling noble."

"Today, you'll get to do group, pair, or individual work. You'll get put into a random scenario of someone you have to protect. You might have to deal with overzealous fans, or a pitchfork wielding mob, or just about anything. So get your group ready, let me know, and I'll start the program for you."

The classroom today was transformed into an african village, the soft sounds of a river flowing not far from it rushing in the background. There were trees, some plants, but the ground was hard and dry.

"Today, as you might have guessed," he said, standing out in the Danger Shop's sunlight quite happily, "we'll be covering African art. As a vast majority of African art is sculpture, I decided to skip the slide show and just program the objects right into the landscape. That does mean we'll be doing a bit of walking, however."

"So, I've just yammered on for a bit," and that came with a smile, "so let me direct you to the supplies. They're in that hut there" and he pulled back a covering to show easels, sketchbooks, canvases... the works.

"Feel free to work in there, or to bring your supplies out and be inspired by the climate or the provided artwork. You know where to find me or Shilo if you need anything or if you have any questions. On anything.

"Begin."

Drake had recreated the walls of Troy around his desk this morning. Whether it was purely for atmosphere or to protect himself from Karla was anyone's guess. He was also snapping his fingers to change the attire of each student as they arrived so that everyone looked much like the cast of Troy, only with less oily muscles and abs because Drake didn't have a death wish, thank you very much. There was also a large wooden horse tucked in a corner with a sign around its neck saying "There are no Greeks here, move along."

Drake talks too much. )

"So for today's discussion, you can either go back to the beginning and put yourself in Paris's place: what do you do with the apple?" He snapped his fingers and conjured up a trio of women in white gowns. "Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera await your decision. Or you can pick a character and either justify their actions or pick who you think that character believes to be the biggest idiot and why. Feel free to choose any character, except for two. Karla, you're Helen, and Gabrielle, you're Cassandra. Mostly because I think I'm funny."

"I trust that all of you survived your weekend with your relatives mostly intact," Anakin said, sweeping into the room precisely on time. "Today we talk about something called the Golden Rule, a concept which unites many separate religions on this planet," he said, leaning against his desk and stared around the classroom. "It sounds altruistic: 'do unto others as you would have done unto you', but there's a couple of logical flaws in it. What if you don't mind getting poked in the stomach? Does it follow that you could wander around aimlessly poking people? What if you don't see what's wrong with stealing? Or killing? Or hating entire groups of people on principle? If the practical application is supposed to be you randomly help people because they could be good, wouldn't the opposite be that you could randomly harm people because they might be evil?"

He shrugged. "I suppose the Golden Rule could be broken down to 'be nice to people, and they'll be nice to you' but out here in the real world, we all know it doesn't exactly work like that, and the concept could also be reinterpreted as 'it doesn't bother me, so why does it bother you?' Is this a case of aiming for an ideal and hoping that it will cause a ripple effect of positive things, or something overly simplistic that taken to its logical extreme renders itself useless? Has seeing it on everything from coffee mugs to tea towels made the very idea of it trite, or does it still have a place in the mind of someone trying to lead an ethical life?"
