When the students filed into the classroom today, they might notice that Algren didn't look... entirely uncomfortable as he glanced at his notes on today's subject matter. Either this was because he was hell-bent on not letting it seem as though Jim was getting to him, or else it was the fact that he had a passing awareness about this one even before he'd learned he was to teach this class.

Unlike last week, Bond was very much himself as when the class entered.

"Good afternoon," he said, after the last student arrived. "I trust you all managed to survive the weekend, hopefully with your dignity intact."

"Given that most of you probably had busy weekends, we're going to spend this class decompressing and watching a movie," Bond continued. "There are also a number of handouts on the film's subject that you may take if you so desire."

"Congratulations, by all reports everyone survived the weekend," Aeryn greeted the class. "Luckily for everyone nothing strange rained down from the sky or invaded. I want to take a moment to talk about whether your relatives or friends had any trouble adjusting, and whether you had difficulties explaining anything to them."

Once the discussion was over- and yes, Aeryn found it strange that her class ever had anything to do with talking- she continued, "One of the things you've undoubtedly found is that sometimes you need to release stress and frustration. This is something you've probably discovered in the course of your lives, not just here. If you haven't, I envy you. There are a lot of methods for dealing with it that are either bad, or frowned upon, such as drinking your sorrows away, or killing people, so... don't do them." The last part she didn't so much agree with, but. "Instead, we're going to focus on a healthy physical release. I present to you the foam bat. You can hit people, walls, yourself, it doesn't matter, it won't hurt them. That's what you get to do today. Just leave the padding on, I do not want to send anyone to the clinic."

There was a large projector set up in the front of the classroom, and Colette's chef whites were spotless, as if they were armor against anything that might seem awry.
"Bonjour," she said. "Today we will conference in with some friends of mine in Paris, Alfredo Linguini and his ... and Remy."

No, she still couldn't admit Remy was a rat out loud.

"I admit Remy's form is a bit unusual, but this dish is his specialty. I would not want to make ratatouille for class without his supervision."

With that warning, she hit a projector button and came up with an image of a gangly redheaded man with a gray rat balanced on his head. "Hi, I'm Linguini," the redhead said, grinning at Colette a little nervously. The rat waved. "Ready to go, Colette?"

"Always," she said, hoping nothing would go wrong.

The rat sprang into action, jumping here, grabbing Linguini's hand to make him chop one thing or stir another, tossing a rat-sized armful of herbs into the pot. The final project came out of the oven looking something like this."

"And so," Colette said, when they were done, "Ratatouille. I do not say 'anyone can cook' lightly. You have recipes similar to Remy's. Begin."

Anemone was in a fantastic mood when she opened up the library. She and Dominic had handwavily due to player illness gone surfing, and apparently Maria seemed satisfied with the fact she hadn't hit anyone lately that didn't deserve it.

In fact, there had been talk about her coming home for a visit over fall break or homecoming, or possibly both, which had Anemone waltzing around the library with Gulliver, singing nonsense songs as they twirled through the stacks.

The library was open, but you may have trouble getting the aide's attention.

"Last week, we were talking about the amount of dancing going around during the 1920s, relief after the end of a war, that kind of thing," Mitchell started, regarding the class. "Which was nice for those of you on this end of the Atlantic, or at least outside of Germany, which was wracked by poverty in the wake of the Treaty of Versailles. In 1919, a bloke called Adolf Hitler joined the German Workers' Party, a party of no real influence. They advertised a bit, never got more than a few dozen in until Hitler prompted them to start rolling the presses, which they did. Turns out he had a real gift for public speaking, especially around the discontented, looking for a quick break."And so, we get to the Rise of Hitler. )

Today's session was back in the usual classroom, though space had been cleared in the center of the room. The sky overhead was enchanted a bright blue, possibly to counteract the glare on Sirius's face.

"In our world, there are three spells that are known as the Unforgivable Curses," Sirius began, not looking at Remus as he took a spider from a glass jar and placed it on the desk in front of him. There had been Words about this particular lesson plan. "Using them on an another human being guarantees you a lifetime spent in Azkaban Prison. Since today's lesson is about mind control, and you are all mature students it seems appropriate to show you an example of the Imperius Curse." Sirius pointed his wand at the spider, murmuring, "Engorgio," and the spider tripled in size, so that all of the students could see it clearly. "Under the spell of Imperius, the victim is completely under the control of the witch or wizard who cast it. The very strong-willed can shake off the Imperius Curse," Sirius continued as the spider wiggled its legs around, "but it is a very difficult thing to learn." He waved his wand again and muttered, "Imperio." The spider stopped moving. Without looking at Remus, Sirius commanded the spider quietly, "Dance."

It was really excellent that he wasn't looking at Remus, as the man in question looked absolutely furious at the use of the curse in class. That was not in the lesson plan, which Remus had carefully written out and Sirius had undoubtedly not read at all. The spider, as it happened, did dance, its legs flailing out in a sick little tapdance. "The Imperius is one of the three Unforgivable Curses in our world," he said, glaring daggers at Sirius, "which are called that for a reason. Mind control is not something to experiment with. Outside of the experience of myself and Professor Black, I understand that there are a number of you who know of practices like this in your own home worlds. Even in the Muggle world, brainwashing is not a horribly-unheard-of practice. There are few things more terrifying than not being in control of your own actions." And if anyone would know, he would. "So, why does this sort of mind-control seem to be so common across universes? Is it simply that inherent desire to control that which you can't?"

"And after you've answered those questions, we'd like you to participate in an exercise," Sirius said, returning the spider to its normal size, popping it back into its jar, and then shooting Remus the sort of insolent look that had sent Snape into a fury when they were all students together. "We're going to pair you up to play Simon Says." After a very brief explanation of the game, Sirius reached for a sheet of parchment. "The following people are Simons. The rest of you must follow their instructions."

Don't forget to say 'Simon Says'! )
