The Danger Shop was set up like a large gymnasium as usual, but this week there was a giant mechanical bull in the center of the room, surrounded by cushy mats. Riding on top of it with one hand on the saddle reigns was the instructor, dreads loose and face grinning broadly. He dismounted the bull when it was time for the lecture to begin.

As some would say, Ronon was scary when he was in a good mood. "So, this weekend was all about family and friends making you miserable. My friend did the opposite, so you get a fun class out of it. First we're watching Urban Cowboy, then you're gonna ride the bull. See how long you can hold on once it gets up to speed." He picked up a large cowboy hat and talked bull riding safety for a few moments. "One hand goes on the bull, the other holds this hat in the air for balance. Go ahead and place bets on who falls off quickest and we'll see what you got compared to my last class."

"Good morning," Ghanima said cheerfully as the students trickled into class today. "I see most of you managed to survive your families! Thank whatever god you believe in and grab some coffee, because we have a lot to cover today."

"Polytheism is the belief in and worship of multiple deities, called gods and goddesses. These are usually assembled into a pantheon, along with their own mythologies and rituals. Many religions, both historical and contemporary, have a belief in polytheism, such as Hinduism, Shinto, Ancient Greek Polytheism, Roman Polytheism, Germanic Polytheism, Slavic polytheism, Chinese folk religion, Neopagan faiths and Anglo-Saxon paganism."

He was not, of course, an atheist; on the Disc the gods dealt severely with atheists. On the few occasions when he had some spare change he had always made a point of dropping a few coppers into a temple coffer, somewhere, on the principle that a man needed all the friends he could get. But usually he didn't bother the Gods, and he hoped the Gods wouldn't bother him. Life was quite complicated enough. )

"For your assignment today, I have handouts regarding various early polytheistic religions. Please pick a religion and a deity from that pantheon, and discuss with a friend or two why you think people during that era might have worshiped such a god."

Tyler watched the students filing in, arms crossed before him and a covered Styrofoam chest with a slight curl of steam rising from it resting on the lab table at the front of the class. When it seemed like everyone who was going to come was there, he started to talk.

"Morning. I am hoping all of you got through the weekend okay. I had visits with some of your friends and relatives; I promise everything I said was true, and most of it was good."

He drew a deep breath, lifting the loose-fitting lid off the chest and watching the steam rise. "All right. Now. Fun part. Dry ice. This is frozen carbon dioxide -- the same stuff that makes soda fizzy. Cool thing about dry ice, it doesn't really want to freeze on this planet, so if you force it to, it's continuously evaporating and turning into a gas." With gloved hands, he reached into the chest and brought out a kernel of the ice, then dropped it into a black plastic film can. A few seconds later, the lid of the canister flew off, narrowly missing the first row of chairs. Tyler smirked, then continued his lecture about the properties and uses of dry ice and the science behind it.

"For your lab segment today, I'm just going to let you play with this stuff." He started handing out one-pound chunks in small trays, placing them in front of each student alongside some other supplies they might want to use to test the ice. A light fog from the ice's evaporation filled the room. "Wear lab gloves unless a cold burn sounds like fun to you. Here is a handout with some ideas to get you started. I like the comet myself."

Once everyone had some ice, he waited at the back of the classroom. "Go to it. I'm around."

When the students came into the classroom this week, they would find the writing on the board to be even messier and hard-pressed than usual, although the message was fairly simple and clear:

"Axspearimint w/ Grinlings went v. v. wrong. Cannot make it to class today.
Plz be gud and watch documentary about rain forest faeries, take notes for diskuson next class.
TAs, if other students are not good and don't watch, rite there names down 4 GREAT JUSTICE.
TAs, if you are bad and do not watch, then SHAME ON U.
"

There was, of course, a TV and a DVD player ready, though it was probably best not to ask about the little spots of what looked a little like blood on the floor.

"I hope you all had an uneventful weekend," Edmund said to the gathered group. "This is the last week of drills. Practice footwork, defence and attack drills, either on your own or in pairs. If you need a reminder or some constructive criticism, call me over. The best way to learn is the sink or swim method, so next week will be full sparring, putting these drills into practice."
