A sign on the door says: *Shop Class Cancelled. Go back to bed.*

The computer components that were HAL have been disconnected and placed in the corner.

Mac sits at his desk, a pair of crutches leaning on the wall and a cast on his leg. His mood is somewhere between grumpy and guilty.

Zero tacked a little handmade sign she'd made to the library doors as she opened up:

Zero is here. You may have to look for her a bit.

Then she plonked herself down behind the desk with a cup of coffee.

Reciprocity

First off, a portion of Chicago is show...you know the part. When you're good to Mama.

"So. How does reciprocity serve to strengthen incidental or transient relationships? Relationships based on needs and desires?"

*** *** *** ***

401--5th period

"Good proposals, gang. I'm really pleased with them. Ok. Moving on.

Starting today and for the next two weeks I want you to analyse the role of communication in organiztions. Please interview Mr.s Zordon, Pierce, and Ms. Washburn and find out how they communicate. You can tell them what you are doing, or you can simply go chat. They like that. Really. They weren't born administrators, you know.

The next portion of the assignment will be given on Monday. Please discuss who you'd like to talk to, what you might ask, and then spend the rest of the class reading this handwavey handout on register and heirarchy in organizational comm."

Sociology of Violence (2nd Period)

Grissom hands out a study guide to the students as they enter.

"You will have this period to review the study guide, and clarify anything that's unclear to you. Feel free to dicuss the material with your fellow students, and have a nice break."

Sociology of the Paranormal (6th Period)

"You have your study guide, your notes, and the resources of the lab, your fellow students, and your professor if you have any questions.

Please use this period to review for your exam, and keep your voices down for those who wants to use the period for silent study."
[identity profile] imanaturalblond.livejournal.com
"Good morning," Rita said, barely glancing up. "Today is a free study period. Your midterm is the Tuesday after next. I suggest you use this hour to go over your notes and ask any questions you may have."

"All right, boys and girls, you have until Friday to turn in your midterms - and I'll expect to see well-developed articles on these people on my desk Friday morning and no later, mind, and let's not forget that it is twenty-five percent of your grade - but in the meantime, you may use the period to finalize those articles and ask me any questions you have."

Byzantine Civilization of the Middle Ages

In the fifth century AD, the mighty Roman Empire "fell" to invading barbarians and complex internal pressures. An empire that had been centrally governed for centuries disintegrated into numerous warring states. Yet the Emperor Constantine's new capital city -- named with charming modesty after himself -- remained.

Constantinople was located on a peninsula, which made it naturally secure from invasion on three sides, and its fourth side was fortified with a network of three walls that withstood direct attack for over a thousand years. Its stable economy provided a strong military and, together with an abundant food supply and advanced civil engineering, a high standard of living. Christianity was firmly entrenched in Byzantium, and literacy was more widespread there than in any other nation in the middle ages. Although the predominant language was Greek, Latin was also fairly common, and at one point all seventy-two of the world's known languages were represented in Constantinople. Intellectual and artistic endeavors thrived.

This is not to say that the Byzantine Empire was an oasis of peace in the desert of the perilous middle ages. On the contrary, its long history is marked by numerous wars and remarkable internal strife. Its official borders expanded and shrank several times as its rulers attempted to restore the empire to its former glory or fought off invaders -- or occasionally attempted both simultaneously. The penal system was so harsh as to be viewed by western crusaders -- no strangers to mutilation and other extreme measures in their own systems of justice -- as exceedingly cruel.

Nevertheless, Byzantium remained the most stable nation of the middle ages. Its central location between western Europe and Asia not only enriched its economy and its culture but allowed it to serve as a barrier against aggressive barbarians from both areas. Its rich historiographical tradition -- strongly influenced by the Orthodox Church -- preserved ancient knowledge upon which splendid art, architecture, literature and technological achievements were built.

Alas, all good things come to an end. The Byzantine Empire's end came at the hands of the Ottoman Turks who, since nearly the beginning of Byzantium's ascendancy, had been trying to conquer it. In 1453 they finally did. They renamed the city Istanbul, turned the Hagia Sofia
into a mosque, and Islam has reigned there since.

We will revisit the Byzantine Empire from the point of view of the Islamic world next week, and from the point of view of the rest of Western Europe later in the semester.

"All right, boys and girls. We've talked a lot about invasion of privacy and the rights of the media this term, right?" Rita said. "Well, I'm sure you've all had experiences wherever you're from with the media covering something in a manner you construe as 'unfair.'

Your project, which will be twenty-five percent of your grade and due two weeks from Friday, will be to do research on a tabloid, tabloid reporter, or some other aspect of the media that intrigues you and strikes you as 'amoral.' You'll present your findings to the class, and to me in the form of a one hundred word essay. Questions?"

[ooc: Feel free to use actual tabloids for this, or use something from your canon. Or make something up. Just be creative and have fun!]

There are snacks and assorted beverages on a table to the side, and the house lights are up.

The stage lighting is still a little beyond Rory, so the simple overhead fluorescents will have to do for the day.

And by the door, there's a sign-in sheet.

Actors? Your stage awaits.

[If you comment before my OCD threads are up, I'll get Callisto to burninate you. OCD is up! Comment away! And here is a helpful link to the full text of the play, and here is the cast list, which will be a bit revised today, yes.]

There is breakfast muffins, danishes, juice and coffee on the breakfast table.

Charlie's looking unusually somber today. "I'm sad to inform you all that Friday will be my last day at Fandom High. I'll be going back to California to assist my brother on a very important case, but I believe the school administration will be able to find a replacement for me." He smiles. "Anyway, today we shall watch a movie, after I've handed out your grades, of course."

"First, homework from last lesson on genetic diseases, in on my desk, please."

"Second, I want to talk about your midterm. I'm going to be setting you an essay question on evolution and adaption."

Written on the board is: Give several examples of the way in which primate characteristics have changed over time in response to selective pressures. Which characters are easy to explain with reference to function?

"You have until Monday, March 20th to hand it in," Daniel continues. "This will be accounting for thirty-five percent of your total grade. I'm not going to set either a maxiumum or minimum word limit, but I'd suggest that it's at least 1,500 words." [[ooc: omg you totally don't have to write this!]]

"Now. Moving on to human biological adaptability.

The human body readily responds to changing environmental stresses in a variety of biological and cultural ways. We can acclimatize to a wide range of temperature and humidity. When traveling to high altitudes, our bodies adjust so that our cells still receive sufficient oxygen. We also are constantly responding in physiological ways to internal and external stresses such as bacterial and viral infections, smog, dietary imbalance, and overcrowding.

This ability to rapidly adapt to varying environmental conditions has made it possible for us to survive in most regions of the world. We live successfully in humid tropical forests, harsh deserts, arctic wastelands, and even densely populated cities with heavy pollution. Most other animal and plant species are restricted to one or relatively few environments by their more limited adaptability.

Humans normally respond to environmental stresses in four ways:

1. genetic change
2. developmental adjustment
3. acclimatization
4. cultural practices and technology

The first three are biological responses. The last three occur during our lifetime without further genetic change.

I want to discuss what each of these responses involve, and also, how our body has adapted, or could adapt to specific stresses.

Thank you, and have a great break."

"All right, guys, today is pretty easy stuff, because there's no lecture to listen to. I'm going to hand out dreams to you guys, and you're going to stand up in front of the class and interpret someone else's dream for us. And then? We can discuss it."

OOC: And the OCD threads are about to go up. Wait for 'em! OCD up, post away!

ETA: Sorry this went up so late, guys. The three and a half hour conference call at work today fried my brain, and I'd left my flash drive at home, where I had all the coding for the OCD threads. I didn't want to redo it (see above re: fried brain), so I just copy/pasted where I could in between dealing with RL.

"Greeeetings!" Sam the Eagle was perched at the front of the class. He was trying to look all official and proper, but ended up looking quite constipated. "Boys and girls, it is I - Sam the American Eagle. I would just like to say a few words about reading the federal budget today. You see, budgeting is the American way! All good Americans budget. And today, fine, upstanding students attending an American school, I - Sam the American Eagle - will teach you a few things about reading the budget made by the American government.

First of all - do not read it. The federal budget is none of your concern, children. You should let the American government handle the hows and whys of money spending and be glad that money is being spent on you at all. Many significant and intellectual people come together to make the budget for the American people. They are much smarter than you. They know what they are doing. Trust in your government! Read only what you need to read and complain about not getting enough money for your pet project. But know that very smart people were arguing behind doors, probably nude, to get the job done. And a magnificent job it is indeed.

This is Sam the American Eagle telling you to love the American government, trust that it loves you and do not forget to study for your midterm on Friday."
