PRINCIPLE
Rhythm can be described as timed movement through space; an easy, connected path along which the eye follows a regular arrangement of motifs. The presence of rhythm creates predictability and order in a composition. Rhythm can be created in a number of ways. Linear rhythm refers to the characteristic flow of the individual line. Repetition involves the use of patterning to achieve timed movement and a visual "beat". Alternation is a specific instance of patterning in which a sequence of repeating motifs are presented in turn; (short/long; wide/narrow; round/square; black/white). Gradation employs a series of motifs patterned to relate to one another through a regular progression of steps.

ELEMENT
Form and shape are areas or masses which define objects in space. Form and shape imply space; indeed they cannot exist without space.

There are various ways to categorize form and shape. Form and shape can be thought of as either two dimensional or three dimensional. Two dimensional form has width and height. It can also create the illusion of three dimension objects. Three dimensional shape has depth as well as width and height. Form and shape can also be described as either organic or geometric. Organic forms such as these snow-covered boulders typically are irregular in outline, and often asymmetrical. Organic forms are most often thought of as naturally occurring.

Principle

EMPHASIS is how the focal point of a painting is placed to direct the attention to the painting. One method used to attract attention in the design of a page or work of art is the use of a focal point. A focal point draws your attention to the most important element on the page. In realistic art the focal point is usually quite easy to spot. Larger figures, usually found in the foreground, provide a focal point. Even in non-realistic art, it is usually easy to spot the focal point. If most of the figures are horizontal, a vertical element will stand out as a focal point. If the rest of the elements are irregular, a geometric shape will stand out. If most of the elements are dark, a splash of light color will catch the eye. Emphasis by isolation or placement is also a useful way of attaching attention to a particular point in a work of art.

Element

COLOR is not essential to a good design. However, color is an added dimension that can evoke moods and make powerful statements when used wisely. As I myself know, using dark colors can be intimidating, using lights reassuring or passive, and using complimentary colors can enhance an otherwise already pleasing work of art. There are three main components of color:

* Hue: Where the color is positioned on the color wheel. Terms such as red, blue-green, and mauve all define the hue of a given color.
* Value: The general lightness or darkness of a color. In general, how close to black or white a given color is.
* Saturation: The intensity, or level of chroma, of a color. The more gray a color has in it, the less chroma it has.

(Personally, all colors that have analogues in jewels and blood are the kinds I find most attractive.)

Angel turned in essays on Direction (element) and Balance (principle).

Principle:
Balance in art is, basically, whether or not the art looks like it will fall over. There are two types of balance, symmetrical and asymmetrical.

Symmetrical balance happens when the two sides of the image mirror each other. While not every object is identical on each side, they are similar in size, shape, and color. Sometimes the two sides are actually identical.

Asymmetrical balance occurs when the two sides of an image are not mirrored. Smaller items on one side may be balanced by a large item on the other side, or one darker item may need to be balanced by several lighter items, or the opposite may be true. Asymmetrical balance is harder to achieve.

Element:
Color is a very powerful element of design. There are three main components of color: hue, value, and saturation. Hue is the term for the pure spectrum colors commonly referred to by the "color names" such as blue and yellow. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Saturation is the intensity of a color.

Color can also have meanings and associations, both negative and positive. Color can also incite emotional responses in people. For example, red can be violent or exciting. I like blue, personally. I think that blue is a very calming sort of color.

Jaye, continuing her accidental trend of being an all-out sucky TA, turns in a 98-word essay on element and a 99-word essay on a principle of design. Eh. She's not in a math class.

Zero turns in about a hundred words on balance (principle) and almost two hundred words on color (element). She got a little carried away there.
