Principle:
Balance in art is, basically, whether or not the art looks like it will fall over. There are two types of balance, symmetrical and asymmetrical.

Symmetrical balance happens when the two sides of the image mirror each other. While not every object is identical on each side, they are similar in size, shape, and color. Sometimes the two sides are actually identical.

Asymmetrical balance occurs when the two sides of an image are not mirrored. Smaller items on one side may be balanced by a large item on the other side, or one darker item may need to be balanced by several lighter items, or the opposite may be true. Asymmetrical balance is harder to achieve.

Element:
Color is a very powerful element of design. There are three main components of color: hue, value, and saturation. Hue is the term for the pure spectrum colors commonly referred to by the "color names" such as blue and yellow. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Saturation is the intensity of a color.

Color can also have meanings and associations, both negative and positive. Color can also incite emotional responses in people. For example, red can be violent or exciting. I like blue, personally. I think that blue is a very calming sort of color.
