Journalistic Integrity (Wednesday, March 1 - 6th period)

"All right, boys and girls. We've talked a lot about invasion of privacy and the rights of the media this term, right?" Rita said. "Well, I'm sure you've all had experiences wherever you're from with the media covering something in a manner you construe as 'unfair.'

Your project, which will be twenty-five percent of your grade and due two weeks from Friday, will be to do research on a tabloid, tabloid reporter, or some other aspect of the media that intrigues you and strikes you as 'amoral.' You'll present your findings to the class, and to me in the form of a one hundred word essay. Questions?"

[ooc: Feel free to use actual tabloids for this, or use something from your canon. Or make something up. Just be creative and have fun!]

Re: Discussion/Questions?

Stupid pen. Stupid piece of paper itching at her finger. And she'd come that close to getting Daniel's shirt stuck on her hand yesterday. That wouldn't have looked very good, now, would it?

Janet raised her hand--the one without anything stuck to it--and smiled sweetly at Professor Skeeter. "You used to write for a tabloid before you came here, didn't you, Professor?" she asked. Not that she had any idea, but it seemed like a good question to ask.

Hm. If she had annoyingly sticky hands, she might as well put them to good use. Maybe she could get Skeeter's glasses. Or maybe Skeeter had one of those stupid quills around the room somewhere.

It was possible that Janet was slightly hypoglycemic since she hadn't eaten since sixth period yesterday. Just slightly. Though she was definitely cranky and looking for a good target.

"Oops, sorry," said Janet, smiling unapologetically. "What was it called? And what made it so well-respected?"

She glanced around the room, trying to keep an eye out for a brightly-colored quill moving on its own.

Janet tried not to be obvious when glancing at the quill. She'd get it on the way out the door.

"Who accredits the sources?" asked Janet. "I mean, is it like a school, where there are organizations that are universally recognized as accrediting bodies? Or is it a little more informal?"

"They've never printed one incorrect fact?" asked Janet curiously. "Ever? What's the percentage of their operating budget alloted for fact-checkers?"

"Do you know how many fact-checkers they have on staff?" asked Janet curiously. "Because don't reporters generally work closely with the fact-checkers to make sure their story's right? It sounds like something a place that's as accredited as the Daily Prophet would do."

"Don't reporters generally work with the fact-checkers to make sure their story's right?" asked Janet. Again. Cheerfully. Extremely cheerfully. And possibly louder this time in case Professor Skeeter just hadn't heard her before. "It sounds like something a place that's as accredited as the Daily Prophet would do."

Janet might have grinned a little smugly, and the look was only a slight bit ruined by the pen stuck to her hand. "So do tabloids not have fact-checkers, then? Are they not accredited? Do they get accredited like schools do? What organization accredits the Daily Prophet?"

"They are, aren't they?" asked Janet, her eyes wide. "Gosh, thanks, Professor Skeeter!"

Callisto might have been listening in.

Callisto might have made a note to get in contact with The Daily Prophet's head offices.

Janet might have been asking that question for that very reason. If Callisto were interested, Janet would love to help out.

Janet made sure to walk by Rita's desk on the way out, and when she got near enough? She 'accidentally' stumbled and put her hand out to brace herself. The Quik-Quotes Quill just might have been right exactly her hand hit on the desk. Unfortunately, so was a piece of parchment.

"Crap!" exclaimed Janet. She held up her hand, parchment and quill firmly affixed, and looked pseudo apologetically at Professor Skeeter. "Um, I'm kind of stuck."

"I don't know! And it was stop myself from falling or break my nose!" exclaimed Janet. She shook her hand, palm splayed wide with quill and parchment stuck to every inch of her hand. "It's magic. I don't do magic!"

She hadn't intended for the parchment. Damn it.

Janet looked at Skeeter dubiously.

On the other hand, she was *really* hungry. And she'd like to be able to sleep under her blankets tonight.

"Fine," she said, holding her hand out away from her body and over Skeeter's desk. "Don't turn me into an animal or anything."

Janet glared. "I liked that shirt!" she exclaimed as dust flew into the air.

A large strip was gone off the side of it as well. She'd have held it closed, but then her hand would have been stuck to the shirt. And the stupid pen was still stuck to her hand!

Janet sneezed. And sneezed again.
