jedigrammarians: (Aphra: love the hair!)

The tomb Aphra had created in the Danger Shop was possibly her most epic one yet, so epic that words could not do it justice.

"I hope you're ready for some fun, kids, because we're really going to get our hands dirty tod-" The Danger Shop made a strange, yet disturbingly chipper sound, and a bunch of small, brightly coloured bears with pictures on their bellies appeared.

"Huh, they're like creepy little Ewoks," Aphra said, frowning. "Well, creepier. Okay change of plans. You know what we're doing today, kids? Target practice!"

So, ever since learning about (and kind of freaking out about, and possibly hiding from) rain for the first time, Peridot had always been sort of low-key interested in Earth's weather patterns. They were unlike anything she'd ever seen before; sure, there were storms on other planets, but the most notable ones were on gas giants that even a Gem who could adapt to most of their surroundings would be smart to avoid.

And so of course she'd been paying attention to the little storm that had started to form somewhere out over that large body of water the island was parked by. There weren't many details about it yet, but that just meant that she was going to go stumbling down a Wikipedia rabbit hole trying to find out everything she possibly could about storm systems in general. The science of them seemed fairly straightforward once she understood the physics involved, which meant that her research had gone another direction entirely.

"Humans have a cute little name for everything, don't they?"

Today's rabbit hole, apparently, was hurricane naming conventions. As though words like 'hammer' and 'finger' weren't cute enough, apparently they gave hurricanes names that made very little sense until she looked them up and realized that those names were all human names for humans.

"Weird planet," she muttered as she continued down her wiki rabbit hole. "I'm gonna start naming stuff, too. This computer is now..."

Nope. She had nothing. She still only knew a handful of human names, after all. And so the rest of her day was spent just clicking through the names of random people until she came up with something that seemed appropriately computer-ish.

"I hear there's been a little concern about my loot from last week," Deadpool said, placing what was possibly the exact same bucket of cheap gems from before on his desk. "But let me assure you, it was only a little blood splatter and everything still sold. Nerds are vicious."

And he approved.

"Okay, so today we should... do something. Maybe with chakras and other new age bullshit. So, yeah. Find a chakra and heal something. I could not care less what. Or if it's even real. Just say it's real and move on."

"None of you are thinking about the usefulness of gourds enough!" Karla declared as the class discovered that the room had been overtaken by a slew of dried gourds. "They're edible, which is always a plus, and even the ones that you don't eat can be useful to you. With a gourd, a knife, and some time, you never have to worry about lacking a canteen, a bowl, or a pouch to store things in."

She'd had some concerns about handing out knives to the class, but, hey. She was a Healer. And at least some of these students had been handling weaponry for as long as they'd been alive. Probably.

"I've included everything you need to turn gourds into useful items, so if you're ever stranded in the woods or a vegetable garden, you'll be all set."

"First off, apologies about last week," Isabelle began as everyone had come in. "My other job back in New York kept me away for an emergency. I have no idea what the guidance counselor showed to you ––" Sarah's note had not been very helpful. "–– but I hope it was at least fun, if nothing else."

Well, she knew how this school worked with 'sudden lack of teacher' situations.

"Anyway, now that we're all here, time to get back to business." They were in the Danger Shop once more, this time standing in a hallway in front of a giant wooden door. Next to the door, there was a table with their famliar chosen weapons from the first lesson laid out on it.

(And next to it was another table, with something else. But they'd get to that.)

Isabelle was smirking. "This time, it's time for you to kick some ass." She gestured at the door. "Through here, you'll enter a simulation where you'll face a monster. You'll be armed with only what you chose in the first class ––" Sorry, Eric! "–– but, the monster will be in proportion to whatever weapon you chose. No one's going in on a fully impossible mission." As much as that was a good lesson for some, sometimes. "However, if you still want to change your weapon, you can talk to me about it. I'll decide on a case-by-case basis."

She gestured at the table. "Now, pick up your weapons." Then she gestured at the other table. "And your feather boas."

... Yes, she said that with a straight face. And yes, there was a tableful of moddable! feather boas. And yes, she absolutely was going to make them wear them for this assignment.

"Now, who wants to go first?"

Instead of Cara waiting for the class today, it was Surreal.

But since this crop of students most likely didn't know her, it wasn't Surreal in the leathers and knives that had defined her years at Fandom. This was Surreal, the most expensive courtesan of her Realm, in silks with gems and perfumes and a smile on her lips as she sat at the head of a table filled with fruit, cheese, bread, jam, smoked sausages, and cool summer sweet tea.

"Cara is on a forced rest," she said, clearly amused. "She'll try and kill me for telling you that, but the fact of it all is that sometimes, sugar, everyone needs a break. Self-care is your best defense against exhaustion; mental and physical."

"That includes taking the time to eat right, and since I'm supposed to be on vacation, I'm feeling lazy. We're just going to enjoy lunch, and if Cara doesn't like my teaching, she shouldn't leave me in charge." Surreal waved a hand, indicating that they should dig in, while she poured herself some tea.

She let them socialize and eat for about a half-hour, before she held up a hand to get their attention.

"Oh. And since every one of you who drank the tea or ate the cheese or jam is now 'poisoned,' your second lesson for today is never eat or drink anything you didn't make yourself." Surreal smiled with sharp teeth. "Especially from a stranger, sugars."

"Don't fret, it's just an herb that'll turn your lips blue shortly and will wash off just fine. There's a handout about what to do about poisonings in this world at the door. Basically? If you feel weird, call your healer or doctor or whatever you use, and get it out or off you as soon as possible. I also wrote up a list of things that work on my world if you don't have a healer handy, but it's what works for my world, kittens, and might not apply to you. When in doubt, call your healer."

"Now go ahead and take whatever you want back to your rooms," she said, making the 'poison' items vanish with a wave of her hand. "You want some cheese or jam to prank your roommate...come see me."
