wrongkindofsith: (At least one of us has a clue)

"Apparently some people think this class has too much emphasis on bears." And by some people, Cara meant Cassandra. Cassandra didn't like bears or joy. "Instead we're going to focus on fortifications, because I've been on this island long enough to know something's going to happen before the end of summer, and you can't always hide in the dorms."

"So, today you get to improvise defensive structures from whatever you can get your hands on, then see how they stand up."

Of course, the only building materials hand in the Danger Shop were pillows, but Cara just hoped she wouldn't have to come out and say it.

Class had handwavily been asked to dress slightly more nicely today, and Hannibal looked them over, nodded, and smiled.

"Today we are heading to Papua New Guinea," he announced. If anybody thought he was choosing these places by playing darts with a map...they were probably right. "It is an island country north of Australia, for those of you that know where that is. It is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, in no small part due to its position as a crossroads and years of colonial rule. It is also extremely rural, with most people not living in cities. Its cuisine is similarly diverse, with many strong influences from other cultures."

He led them through the portal and out onto a street in front of a large, luxurious hotel. It was early evening. "Today we are here less for the local cuisine, and more for the local foods. Both the produce and the seafood are incredibly fresh, and while I hesitate to ever endorse a buffet dinner, I understand this one is exemplary. We will be eating at the Grand Brasserie of the Grand Papua hotel. English is spoken by most here, but if you have any questions, please let me know."

"As you may know," Vanessa said, "Dozens of people are abducted by aliens every year. Who knows? Maybe some of them really are abducted by aliens! God knows we have enough of them running around this island," she muttered. "But most of those who are abducted recite a story that doesn't sound like any alien I've ever met. Short, grey, big eyes in a big head, like to strap you down and run experiments on you that involve a suspicious number of probes up the butt...honestly, I think most abduction stories boil down to 'drunk and repressed,' but if this is sounding like a real species or whatever to you, please let me know. Personally, I think if you've probed one human, why do you need a couple of hundred more to confirm your data? But maybe I'm wrong, maybe the little green men--excuse me, the Greys--have a really good reason to trap and release all those people. What do you think?"
