International Cuisine | Friday, 3rd period

Class had ~~handwavily~~ been asked to dress slightly more nicely today, and Hannibal looked them over, nodded, and smiled.

"Today we are heading to Papua New Guinea," he announced. If anybody thought he was choosing these places by playing darts with a map...they were probably right. "It is an island country north of Australia, for those of you that know where that is. It is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, in no small part due to its position as a crossroads and years of colonial rule. It is also extremely rural, with most people not living in cities. Its cuisine is similarly diverse, with many strong influences from other cultures."

He led them through the portal and out onto a street in front of a large, luxurious hotel. It was early evening. "Today we are here less for the local cuisine, and more for the local foods. Both the produce and the seafood are incredibly fresh, and while I hesitate to ever endorse a buffet dinner, I understand this one is exemplary. We will be eating at the Grand Brasserie of the Grand Papua hotel. English is spoken by most here, but if you have any questions, please let me know."

Such as it is. Enjoy a look around a tiny country.

Or lick it. You do you.

Peebee had a silly hat on to cover her crests and a whole elaborate story prepared about having a rare skin condition. Possibly one that she was currently altering to include details about how it meant she could only eat seafood.

Like, a lot of it. Because yes, she was going to try absolutely everything, and the weirder the better.

"Our planet has quite a lot of ocean, so we have quite a lot of seafood," Hannibal said. "Though admittedly I've few other worlds to compare us to."

Peridot was totally gonna lick that fish.

She didn't have any elaborate story made up about why she was green, but she had yet to see a reason to. Most humans assumed that she was a child playing dress-up anyway.

"Does your homeworld have much sea life?" Hannibal asked. "Or come to that, any organic life at all?"

Things like ecosystems might be entirely meaningless if you didn't need air to breathe or water to live.

Peridot gave her head a shake.

"There's.... there's a zoo? But I've never seen it," she shared. "It's for the Diamonds."

Which she very much was not.

"Homeworld itself doesn't have water, though. Or organic life. We... they... Homeworld Gems... aren't fans."

"Oh? Why is that?" Hannibal asked. "Simply because it's unnecessary?"

Peridot shook her head a little.

"It's more complicated than that," she replied. "But it isn't right. What Homeworld thinks of organic life, I mean. They don't see the value in it."

"That isn't terribly surprising," Hannibal said. "People often don't see the value in life different from their own. Some humans have trouble in seeing the value in other humans that are sufficiently different. It takes quite a bit for them to learn otherwise, and some never do."

"I wish I could say that was an unfamiliar sentiment," Peridot muttered, looking back down at her fish. And then giving it another lick. "Is that why humans find it so easy to destroy other organic life in order to create sustenance like this?"

She understood that they had to eat. But for a species that seemed to place so much value on life, they sure did an awful lot of destroying it.

"It is," Hannibal said. "Certainly, some humans like to honor the animals they eat, and others refuse to eat animals. But for the most part, they simply ignore that the life they are eating was ever alive, and consider it their due."

Peridot was quiet for a moment while she thought that one over.

"Sometimes I wonder if humans are more similar to Gems than anybody gives them credit for," she admitted, slowly. "And everything we point at to set you apart from us is just superficial."

"There is also a sizable history of that among humans," Hannibal said wryly. "Are you familiar with the history of slavery on Earth?"

Peridot paused for a moment, and then shook her head.

"Not unless you mean as it pertains to Gems, back when we invaded your world."

"No," Hannibal said. "My version of Earth was never invaded by Gems, and yet we still had slavery. It is far too complex a topic to explain over one dinner, but I suggest you look up the subject the next time you're in the library. Although I should warn you, it's unlikely to make you think any better of humans."

To put it mildly.

"I'm not looking to put your species on a pedestal," Peridot replied. "I simply want to understand you more. I'm probably going to be sharing a world with you for quite some time."

And for better or worse, she wanted to be prepared for that.

Hannibal nodded. "That is a very sensible outlook."

"My Diamond might not be the logical decision maker I had taken her for, but that doesn't mean I can't be," Peridot agreed. "To do anything less would be... stupid."

"Your commitment to your own beliefs is commendable," Hannibal said. "Speaking of which, how is your metal-moving coming along?"

Peridot perked right up at that, oh yes.

"I made a garbage can lid float!"

That was a huge accomplishment, okay?

"I'm going to see if I can sustain the weight of it with me on it, I think, next. That seems to me like it could be useful, somehow."

Self-sustained flight had to be useful.

"That would be," Hannibal agreed. "Being able to affect non-metal things by using the metal around them would open up many more possibilities. Not to mention," he said with a grin, "I imagine you would enjoy flying."

"I could fly before, back when I had my limb enhancers," Peridot agreed. "It saved me from being shattered or poofed at least a few times. I don't have the resources on Earth to build new ones... but I might not need to, if I can make this work."

"I have faith that you will," Hannibal said. "After all, you've gone from nothing to a garbage can lid in a very short time."

He'd save the information on how much metal was in organic life for once she was a bit more practiced; he didn't fancy his blood boiling by accident.

"We Peridots are very determined when we get a mind to be."

Peridot was absolutely preening, yes.

"Well, I only know the one Peridot," Hannibal said, "but so far, you are a very good example."

Summer did not have an elaborate story, but she did have a pretty dress on , because, yeah, like when was going to pass up a chance to dress up aND look cute. Please.

Being in a new country that she'd probably never visit and having fresh seafood only made it even better.

"And how are you this week, Summer?" Hannibal asked.

"Good," said Summer, smiling. "Really good, and not just 'part of my school day is being spent on a beautiful sunny island' good. I don't know, I just feel like something ~~new canon~~ really good is going to happen soon ~~omg finally~~. I just can't ~~new canon!~~ explain it. But it's really ~~ohgod I'm gonna get so jossed~~ interesting. Maybe I'm just in a good mood, and I plan to ~~die while waiting for tonight~~ just enjoy it.

"How about you, Dr. Lecter?"

"I'm well, thank you for asking," Hannibal said with a nod. "I hope ~~your canon~~ whatever it is proves well for you. And a day on a beautiful sunny island can hardly hurt."

"Thanks." Summer smiled, feeling like absolutely nothing could bring her down today. "And thanks for this class. I really liked your class last semester, and I wouldn't have thought it could be topped, but you pulled it off. And I feel a little better having seen a bit more of Earth. It's weird, that I've been all these weird places, but at the same time barely seemed to leave my hometown before coming here."

"You're very welcome," Hannibal said. "And I'm pleased to have helped. You're not alone; I find many of those on Fandom have little experience of their own world. It's one of the reasons I enjoy this class."

He is here. Wondering if he's going to regret this.

Seafood buffet. Mmmmmm.
