"Sorry I couldn't be here last week," Steve said, "something came up." His presence had been requested by the president. He couldn't exactly ask him to wait until after he finished teaching some teenagers to boil water. "Thank you, Mr. Stark, for taking care of everything in my absence. So we're going to push things around a bit, and hopefully we'll still get to cheesecake--" because it was cheesecake "--but this week will be on boiling, simmering, and poaching. First, we'll learn how to boil water from this short video." Once the video was over, Steve said, "Now, just before water boils, it simmers, and looks like this. In many cooking applications, you will bring a liquid to a boil, then turn it down and let it simmer for some period of time. To poach, a temperature a little lower than a simmer is used. All of these applications involve very hot liquids that could burn you, so please be careful."

Steve handed out a sheaf of instructions on some basic applications: how to boil an egg or potatoes, cook rice, and poach an egg or chicken. "I'd like you to read over these instructions, and then we're going to use two of these techniques to make pasta. You'll boil the pasta, following the package directions, while sauce--from a jar, but some of the jarred sauces are pretty good, and it's a lot easier than making your own--simmers in another pan. Put sauce on pasta, add cheese and you've got a tasty and simple meal. So. Get to work!"

"Welcome back," Fraser greeted once everyone had settled down. "I hope you don't think I'm going to ease up because we're a few days away from Parent's Weekend. If anything, performing some strenuous physical activity might help you ease some of the stress you might be feeling. I don't think any of you should worry though because I can't remember anything majorly bad happening at these events."

He smiled and punched a few buttons to get a simulation ready. "Today, we're going hiking. Hiking is walking in natural environments. That's all it is. There are different levels of hiking, of course. Taking a leisurely walk on a hiking trail is a lot different than hiking up a mountain trail. Depending on the type of hike, equipment can include water, food, a compass, sunglasses, sunscreen, clothes, flashlight, first aid kit, fire starter, knife and a map in a backpack. It's also smart to wear a pair of sturdy hiking boots since the terrain can be unpredictable."

To that end, Fraser motioned to a table where several pairs of new hiking boots were lined up. "Today, we're going to walk some of the Appalachain Trail. There is absolutely no way we'd be able to walk the whole thing so we're just going to find a nice, fairly low impact trail and hike. Please feel free to hike with each other, explore the various flora and fauna, and enjoy the view. Please do not get off the hiking trail. All right? Have fun."

Fraser got the sim going and gestured for everyone to get to hiking.

The books seemed, for the most part, to be behaving themselves today, which was fine with Gabrielle; it meant she had to spend less time wrangling them, and could focus instead on the several books on aikido she'd picked out. After Pacifism class yesterday, she'd felt a bit . . . inspired to learn more about it, since it seemed like the sort of skill that would be useful for her.

(There was a bit of a twinge as she got into her reading and realized that she recognized a few of those techniques as things Xena had taught her, admittedly.)

Every now and then her mind drifted off to the problem of what to do about the weekend -- she hardly expected Xena to show up, not after everything, and her parents weren't likely to leave Poteidaia or let Lila go, either. As for Ephiny, she couldn't take the time to get away with the tribe badly decimated, though she had invited Gabrielle to come visit instead.

It sounded like a good idea, and she was leaning toward taking her regent up on it. But for now, more reading about this aikido stuff.

"Last week, we talked about the possible applications of telekinesis," Kerrigan began. They were back in the Danger Shop, this time set up to look like a vast forest. The sun was shining. The birds were singing. Maybe in another life, Kerrigan could have even enjoyed it. "Of course the ability to bat objects around like they're nothing is a very simple, very familiar display of the power, but we can be a little more... subtle... than that."

Her mouth managed a decent simulacrum of a smile. "We'll begin with the molecular level," she said. "If you can bring yourself to be... precise... enough with telekinetic power, there is a whole host of things you can manage. You can make objects crumble at their most basic level - or you can inspire them to... rearrange. Move. With interesting results."

She stretched out a hand. Suddenly, thunder sounded. An arc of lightning came down and buried itself in a tree, shattering a good chunk of it and setting it alight.

Kerrigan dropped her arm easily, and looked back to the class. "We call that the 'psionic storm' effect," she said. "Just one way to think outside the box and realise that we can do more than just fling things about. Today, none of you are doing anything but talk. I know some of you have taken chemistry classes. Physics. You might have experience with types of science we don't know about, or simply have a very active imagination. I want you all to think about this. Given the ability to move things on the molecular level, what could we be capable of? Think of it in terms of 'if we ever manage to harness telekinetic qualities in technological form', if you must. I'm sure there's some friends of quantum mechanics around here."

Ben was feeling pretty worn after a long day of classes and teaching Ender a bit about self-defense without either of them ending up dead. "We're the AV Club," he said, "so let's focus on the visual today."

Yep, it was movie time, kids. He popped in a DVD of TransformersWhen Giant Toys Attack, passed around the popcorn and prepared to veg out.
