doubleohblonde: (Bond is driving)
[personal profile] doubleohblonde
Today the Danger-Shop resembled a crowded loading dock, though even with all the clutter it would have been hard for Bond's students to miss the big, yellow, metal thing standing in the middle of the bay.

"Sometimes you might be called up to use a vehicle made for one purpose for an entirely different one," Bond said, running his hand along the worn and battered side of the power-loader. "However, that kind of improvisation is much more effective if you're familiar with the capabilities and limitations of your tools. Which is why you'll be spending today's class putting this through its paces. It's doubtful you'll ever need to use it, but on the off-chance you find yourself in a situation where you need the extra size and strength, you'll know what to do."

There was a stack of papers on the front desk when the students came into the chemistry lab today, and, once they were all seated and settled, Kūkaku smacked a hand on the stack proudly and announced, "Pop freakin' quiz time, kiddies. We've been doin' a lot of experimental stuff in class, but you should also have been doing some readin' and everything, so now it's time to see if you've been retainin' some of the technical stuff along with the practical applications."

Because this was a high school class, dammit. And Kūkaku was feeling exceptionally lazy this morning.

"Koganehiko, Shiroganehiko, and Scarf Boy'll pass 'em on out to you. There are three sections: basic chemistry, atomic basics, and measurements and conversions. They really shouldn't take that long, but how ya do on these'll probably determine what kind of shit we'll be doing for the rest of the semester, so at least try to do good, yeah? Hand 'em in at the desk when yer finished, and then you can get out of here an' enjoy the rest of yer mornin'."

With that, she relinquished things to the minions to hand out the tests while she got comfortable with her feet up on the desk, ready to singe anyone who might think of cheating off their neighbour.

As the students headed to class, they would find a note on the door, clearly from their teacher by the liberal use of hearts scattered across the pink flowery paper:

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Please meet me in the gymnasium, little ducklings!
I hope you're feeling limber!
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Once there in the gym... )

Shunsui smiled again, bobbing his head in a nod. "So let us think about these things as I'll teach you a few more Aikido moves, and then I would like you to pair up and practise with each other. Remember, we are just diverting energy and the point is to avoiding harming the other person, even if they may intend to harm you ♥. Please ask any questions you may have, and allow me to demonstrate more should you feel you need a bit more guidance on the moves ♥."

"I apologize for my absence last week," Alaric said once everybody sat down. "I was called out of town unavoidably."

No, Damon had wanted someone to hang out with Monday night and Alaric couldn't get rid of his hangover come Tuesday morning.

"Today is gonna be an easy day. Well, actually it's gonna be an easy day in preparation for the hard day you have next week," Alaric said, smiling. "You've heard me lecture enough so next week you guys are going to do the work for me. We are supposed to cover Greek mythological creatures so what I want you to pick one, do a little research and next week you're gonna stand up in front of the class and tell everyone what you learned about the creature you chose."

Alaric started handing out a list of possible things people could pick. "I want you all to tell me what you want to do your presentation on before you leave class today so nobody does two of the same thing. Oh, and the kraken isn't on that list but you're free to do that as well."

Just so long as they shouted "Release the kraken!" at somebody before classtime was over.

"You all are free to leave after you tell me what you chose. Gives you more time to do research."

Class was meeting in the danger shop this week, although the danger shop looked exactly like the classroom they normally met in. Rikku just wanted that extra layer of protection in case anybody didn't follow safety protocols.

She was standing in front of the room when they filled in, and she was using a Bunsen burner to heat a test tube filled with a white substance. The test tube was set at a tilted 45-degree angle.

"This is molten potassium chlorate," she said, by way of starting the class. "Remember how I said last week that some elements get grabby? Potassium chlorate gets grabby. Especially when you introduce it to something like sugar. It's a redox equation -- reduction and oxidation -- and those are kind of difficult, but wow, the payoff is pretty sweet."

She set the Bunsen burner down and used tongs to pick up a gummy bear. "Sugar," she said. "Which has all kinds of yummy bonds for potassium chlorate to nom on. So let's see what happens."

She dropped the gummy bear in, making sure to stand out of the way of the raging tube of fire that quickly began spitting out flames and black chunks of what had once been a gummy bear. (LINK IS TO A VIDEO)

"I bet I have your attention now," Rikku grinned. "So! Today's class is all about fun and interesting reactions. You guys want to try?"

"So, this class wasn't on the syllabus," Cindy said as her students filed into the Danger Shop, "but with Parent's Weekend quickly approaching, I thought it would be a good lesson to have. You've already learned about some of the most important appliances in a house like the fridge and the microwave which can help you not starve to death. Today, we're going to cover a few appliances of lesser importance that still may help you to survive, assuming you have guests that are sticklers for neatness and tidiness."

Cindy pressed a button and several machines appeared: a vacuum, a dishwasher, and a clothing washer and drier. "The dishwasher probably won't help much this weekend, as I doubt your rooms are equipped with one, but these others can help you keep your dorm clean. Even if you are personally predisposed to neatness, these machines were invented to make cleaning much faster and less tedious that it had been in centuries prior."

Demonstrating one machine at a time, Cindy went over how each one worked, including a brief mini-lesson in checking tags and warnings to make sure that clothes were sorted properly and that everything loaded into the dishwasher was labeled 'dishwasher-safe' and another to demonstrate what each of the attachments on the vacuum was good for.

"Items made of delicate materials--which can include silks and satins for fabrics and crystal and china for dishware--should be hand washed and set aside to dry," she explained. "The temperatures and abrupt motions can easily destroy such things. Remember to check the tags and labels for everything you think might be delicate and follow those instructions, unless you fancy having your belongings ruined. Another tip to keep in mind is that most vacuums have a 'bare floor' setting which means that it can be used in lieu of a broom at need. We're going to take some time to practice with all of these appliances, so that your dorm can be made ready for anyone who shows up this weekend."

With another touch of a button, the class found themselves inside a mansion--one that was sadly in need of a good cleaning. In addition to piles of laundry, dirty dishes, and filthy carpets everywhere, there were also windows in need of cleaning, floors begging to be scrubbed, cobwebs that needed removing, and furniture that almost begged for a dusting and polish. There were also piles of clean aprons, hair nets, and rubber gloves for the donning, as well as many common household cleaners, like soaps in aerosol cans and toilet cleaners with duck-shaped necks to get under toilet bowl lids. "Let's see how much of this place you can get cleaned in an hour," Cindy said cheerfully, "using 21st century cleaners and appliances."

Rinoa's headache was getting worse. Her eyes ached, and there was a curiously flat taste in her mouth. She was too stubborn to stay in bed today, because that meant that Ultimecia would win. And so, she was here, even if she was not quite herself.

Subject: Staff Meeting / Publication Postponement

Due to recent staff turnover and the upcoming visitation for Parents' Weekend, we'll be postponing the next edition of the newspaper until the 19th. Please take the week to relax and clean your dorm room, by which we mean hide everything you don't want your family to see*.

yours,
Cally and Blackagar

P.S. *Except your roommate. That's just rude.
