Home Ec 9, Period 4, 3/9

"Sorry I couldn't be here last week," Steve said, "something came up." His presence had been requested by the president. He couldn't exactly ask him to wait until after he finished teaching some teenagers to boil water. "Thank you, Mr. Stark, for taking care of everything in my absence. So we're going to push things around a bit, and hopefully we'll still get to cheesecake--" because it was cheesecake "--but this week will be on boiling, simmering, and poaching. First, we'll learn how to boil water from this short video." Once the video was over, Steve said, "Now, just before water boils, it simmers, and looks like this. In many cooking applications, you will bring a liquid to a boil, then turn it down and let it simmer for some period of time. To poach, a temperature a little lower than a simmer is used. All of these applications involve very hot liquids that could burn you, so please be careful."

Steve handed out a sheaf of instructions on some basic applications: how to boil an egg or potatoes, cook rice, and poach an egg or chicken. "I'd like you to read over these instructions, and then we're going to use two of these techniques to make pasta. You'll boil the pasta, following the package directions, while sauce--from a jar, but some of the jarred sauces are pretty good, and it's a lot easier than making your own--simmers in another pan. Put sauce on pasta, add cheese and you've got a tasty and simple meal. So. Get to work!"

Alex knew how to boil water but it wasn't really needed in a small dorm room so he was fine with paying attention to the video to make sure he hadn't forgot it. There was absolutely no need to scald himself.

While waiting for a partner, Alex started the water boiling. He could remember doing this when his brother and sister were still small and liked trying to knock the pots off the stove. That was always fun to try and stop.

Alex had boiling water, which made him Juliet's favorite person of the moment.

"Is it ready to drop the pasta in yet?" she asked, leaning over he stove. "Oh ... and can I work with you?"

"Nope and yep," he said, answering her questions in order. "We drop it in there now and the noodles are gonna take forever to get all soft and squiggly."

Sure, he knew how to do this but he didn't know the terms.

"Not too soft," Juliet said. "We want them al ... that thing. Al fresco? No, that's not it."

She had no idea to do this, and she didn't really know the terms.

"Al fresco?" Well, he didn't know either so they could be similar there. "That sounds like some freaking fizzy drink. You ever cooked pasta before?"

"I've eaten it," Juliet said, optimistically. "I don't think that's quite the same."

"Probably not," Alex said, chuckling. "I'm not that great at it but I cooked when I was younger for my brother and sister. They'd eat anything though so maybe I really do suck at it."

"So you're the oldest?" Juliet asked. "I always wondered what that would be like. Jeremy and I are the babies."

"Yeah, oldest of three," he said, sounding a little subdued. He shook it off though. "How many brothers and sisters do you have? Big family?"

Juliet nodded. "Three brothers and a sister. But the older ones are a lot older, so mostly I'm just close to my twin."

She poked the pot of boiling water experimentally with a spoon. "Is there anything else we need to do?"

"Nah, we just need to dump the noodles," he said and gestured to her. "Wanna do the honors? Don't burn yourself and we should be good to go with the pasta."

"I can manage that," Juliet said, smiling as she carefully poured in the noodles. "Are your brother and sister coming out this weekend? Our sister is."

"Nah. They're both kinda busy," Alex said, shaking his head. That was easier than saying they were both in foster care and couldn't come. "Your sister know how weird this place is or are you gonna surprise her?"

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2011-03-09 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"She's busy," Juliet said thoughtfully. "I told her a few things, but I don't know if she was listening."

"Let's hope it doesn't rain food then, right?" Alex suggested, stirring the noodles. "I bet that'd get her attention."

Cassidy was entirely too cheerful about cooking.

Karla really had been paying attention to the lecture, she had. But then when she went to start cooking, she just dumped the noodles into the water before turning it on to boil.

And then waited. And waited. And waited. And waited.

She was so not good at this.
