The power was back on today, which meant they could move on to the lesson that had been bumped from last week. Cindy has sent the class an email to meet in the Danger Shop, which had been programmed to look like the Mall of America. Cindy was waiting for them in the center of the food court, though the sound was muted for right now, because she didn't feel like yelling over everyone.

"Welcome," she said, leaning against the Arby's counter and blithely ignoring the customers that occasionally walked past. She pointed at a nearby table, one with a slim briefcase on it. "Take a seat. For those of you who've never been to one of these, this is a shopping mall, an enclosed space filled with tens to hundreds of stores, restaurants, vendors, and random other ways to part you from your money."

Snipped for money babble )

Crossing to the table, she opened the briefcase. Inside were several stacks of cash and brightly colored plastic cards, one for each student. "You each have $250 in cash and a debit card connected to an account with $250 more. Your job today is to go shopping and try to spend as much of this money as you can. Spend it on a variety of items, both expensive and non. See what you can get. As a warning, prices are inflated at a mall; but this should give you kind of an idea of what you can get for $500. Meet back here about fifteen minutes before end of class and we'll talk."

[OCD up! Go shopping!]

The quadbikes were once again in evidence this week, along with the safety gear. The flat field had been replaced with sparse woods, and dirt trails going through hillocks.

"As you can see, today's class involves slightly more challenging terrain," Bond said. "It should also test your ability to multitask, and ability to react under pressure, since in addition to your vehicles each of you will also have one of these. Though they only fire the Danger Shop's equivalent of paintballs. Mainly because rather than some holographic foe, you'll be facing your classmates."

Bond checked his watch. "You have five minutes to change into your gear and scatter before you'll be able to start firing. Use your time wisely."

"Alright, kids," Kūkaku looked the classroom over a little, piece of chalk already in her hand to show how it was likely to be a lecture heavy class today, but she was smirking a little. "Today, we're talkin' about my favourite part of chemistry, and that's the chemical reaction part. Raise your hands if yer surprised."

Just because they should have already read the text didn't mean they were being spared a lecture, although the readers would, as Kūkaku blabbed about all those great details on chemical reactions, how they work, how they were created, and the different factors that would determine how quickly and how substantial the reaction would be.

This included, of course, kinetic theory and the every exciting balancing chemical equations.

"So guess who has homework this week. I've got a packet of chemical equations, and you lucky sods get to work on figuring them out. Obviously, if you're having trouble, I encourage ya to either talk to me or get help from one of your classmates. But that is for home. Today, we're skippin' all the equation stuff and havin' some fun with a more practical assignment."

Practical, anyway, in Kūkaku's book.

"I'm sure you've all heard of the baking soda volcano experiment, where mixing baking soda and vinegar create sa chemical reaction that's supposed to resemble a volcanic explosion. More like a volcanic lava flow, if you ask me. Another popular experiment is the baking soda and vinegar bottle rocket. Sure, these show baking soda and vinegar in a chemical reaction, but excuse me while I fall asleep. Let's make it a bit more interesting and see what you all can do."

"So here's the deal. Baking soda and vinegar as a base for both reactions, but if you wanna add something else to making it more interesting, give us a little more pizazz, go right for it. But your task today is to launch off the rocket into your volcano, and then make the volcano explode. Now, remember, we're in the classroom, so ya gotta keep it rained in, but let's see what you can do. Partner up if you'd like, or work by yourself, but let's get somethin' good started, got it?"

Alaric seemed to be in a better mood this week thanks to the fact that his apartment had heat again and he didn't have to trudge through like a foot of snow to get here. The good mood translated into Alaric preparing a long lecture and a stupid-ass activity that would give him great joy to watch people try to pull off. He asked the students to meet him in the Danger Shop, which had been transformed into a pretty large graveyard with a section closed off for desks and a chalkboard since there were notes to be taken before they got to the dirty work.

And there would be dirty work today.

"Good afternoon, ducklings ♥!" The classroom was in its usual state of desks pushed back to make room for a comfy circle in the middle with the requisite hot cocoa, but there were also several other boxes scattered around, and Shunsui had in front of him a pile of paper with something that looked like a list.

"So far in this class, we have had the opportunity to discuss two great ways of pacifism and so today will be more activity-based ♥. Because it is one thing to be able to know a bunch of rambling thoughts and philosophy and an entirely different thing to put some of these believes into motion ♥. Now, we're starting very very simply today, because one of the best ways to help live a life of nonviolence and pacifism is to have a nonviolent hobby ♥, preferably something that you can channel any aggressive energy into and manage to create something beautiful in the end ♥. That way, you are contributing a piece of art in the world rather than something of hate and anger ♥. I'm sure you can all guess what my hobby is ♥!"

If you were thinking drinking or sleeping or womanizing, you were wrong.

"Writing ♥!" Shunsui announced proudly. "I am the author of two published books, you know, and I have written a third ♥. To me, writing is like releasing the poetry of the soul onto paper so you can share it with others ♥. But that is just one example of a peaceful hobby, or a hobby in which one can engage as a sort of self-meditation, as a centering technique to remove oneself from the insanity of life and absorb themselves in the tranquility of creation ♥. One of the kindest and most peaceful women I know, for example, is an expert at Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement ♥. One of the less peaceful women I know turns to organization to calm her down ♥. One could maintain a zen garden, or knitting is increasingly popular. Make scarves, not war ♥!"

Here Shunsui chuckled, and started to pass around the papers.

"On these papers is list of various hobbies to give you some inspiration ♥. Of course, you are not limited to these options, and you are to avoid any of the violent ones, such as hunting or lawn darts..." The latter of which eventually had to be outlawed at Shinigami picnics... "But these boxes in the classroom today have anything you might need to get you started on exploring a new hobby, and that is what today is for ♥! Try to find something that you think sounds relaxing, meditative, productive, and most importantly new to help keep you away from the ever present sway of negative influences ♥!"

Class was not in the danger shop this week, but back in the regular classroom. However, there were three long tables marked as 'stations' at the front of the room, each with several microscopes waiting.

Rinoa was quiet during her shift today. It hurt her, seeing Jono so torn up, and being unable to do anything about it.

She supposed being his friend counted as something, but it felt like it wasn't enough.

The library was open, and Rinoa was organizing the shelves.

Blackagar had somehow come to the conclusion that a newspaper ran on coffee. Thanks a lot, internet. It was just a good thing his browser had parental controls on it or there would be an even stranger idea of what to do.

Yeeeah.

There was a note neatly printed on the oh so conveniant dry erase board for when people arrived:

Welcome to the newspaper. Cally is unwell and will not be joining us this week, but I am sure she would welcome you as well. Please discuss what you would like to write for the first paper on Saturday.

Short and to the point. It was for the best when you couldn't talk.
