It was the Day of the Dead. Sadly, all that meant to John was hugely marked-down candy prices. And a really terrible stomachache he intended to share with others. "Welcome to the day after Halloween. Just in case any of you failed to stock up, I've brought a ton of moddable candy to share. No creepy clown costumes required." Ew, clowns.

"So far we've talked about a lot of different types of food. Today, we're attacking a dessert. Specifically, the cheesecake." Because he'd wanted some and not gotten it over the weekend. "Now, I know what the kids not from this time or planet are thinking - why would you want cheese in a cake? Trust me, it's not like that. Let's watch a quick video on how it's made and then we'll dig into the different varieties I had brought in from off-island and you can tell us all why you think cheese is a good dessert. There's a whole factory for this stuff so it must be true."

Normally, this was the day of the week when you would find Gabrielle perched on a chair at the desk to the sound of cheerful, tuneless humming and the soft, rapidfire scratch of quill against parchment and the faint aroma of fresh-brewed coffee lingering in the vicinity.

In the wake of the trip to Kaeleer a few days ago, two of these things were true today: namely, Gabrielle was behind the desk, and there was coffee, but there wasn't much in the way of cheer or literary productiveness, and you'd have to settle for an introspective and somewhat quiet aide on this particular Monday. Actually, a third thing was partly true as well; there was a parchment scroll in front of her, although she was reading it, not writing on it. Anyone who could decipher the random and completely made-up alphabet writing on it might catch a glimpse of something about Roman forces in Britannia, a message from Boadicea, and the rise of a monotheistic cult of some concern.

It kept the library quiet, at least -- and Gabrielle realizing she was going to be packing for another trip very, very soon.

It couldn't possibly be worse than what she'd just gone through, anyway.

Alexander wasn't exactly sure how Zack might feel about things, but he knew that he was definitely suffering from a vampire related headache. Even the thought of red Kool-Aid was making his stomach feel a little bit ill, so he hoped no one particularly minded an easy day today.

"We've had a busy few weeks," he offered, "so I figured we could all just relax today, hang out, and perhaps play some cards. I figured, we've all got plenty of candy left over from the holiday, which would make for an interesting form of money for betting to give the games a little more of an interesting touch. So grab some cards, deal them out, and we'll just have a nice relaxing hour."

"Last week, you were given an assignment," Kerrigan began. If anyone hadn't done their homework, she'd know. (Not that she'd honestly care, but she'd know.) "This week, I'm not going to say another word. You're going to do the talking. What influence did your chosen area have on your potential tactics? What challenges did you have to overcome with your given advantages and disadvantages? Which tactic seemed the most sound, using all the variables?"

A pause.

"And of course, who won? I want all of you to answer these questions. Offer each other suggestions on alternate paths. Get to it."

"Okay, people, let's get started," Max said, waving at the desks. "Last week you all got a chance to play around with slings and atlatls. I'm sure you had a lot of fun. This week we're looking at some weapons I assume most of you are familiar with. It's what most people think of when they think of 'low-tech' ranged weapons."

He picked up a longbow from his desk and held it up. "While mechanical weapons like the ones we looked at last week work by providing you better leverage for throwing things, tension weapons are designed to store firing energy and release it very, very quickly. It may, for instance, take you half a second to fully draw a bow, but once you release it it will take far less than half a second to snap back into its natural position. By providing the same amount of force as your draw, but doing so in less time, a tension weapon significantly multiplies the speed and range of its projectiles."

"There are quite a few different types of tension weapons, but for the most part they balance three factors: speed, power, and control." Max put down the bow and lifted a slingshot. "Most of you have probably seen a slingshot before. They're easy to draw, and they're easy to aim, but both of those are due to the fact that most slingshots don't provide all that much resistance. That is, you don't have to strain yourself to draw it back. That means that they don't pack as much power as, say, a bow. Now sometimes speed and control matter more than power. After all, maybe you don't want to kill someone, or maybe you just have really good aim and can hit them in some weak point, or maybe it's at close range."

He grabbed the longbow again. "Bows trade some of the speed and control of a slingshot for power. They're harder to draw, but that's because they impart more force to their shots. That force comes at a price, though, because it's harder to aim properly when you're straining yourself to keep the bow drawn."

"Given the slingshot and the bow, you might assume that extra power always comes at the expense of control, but," he swapped his demonstration weapon for a crossbow, "the crossbow violates that expectation. Crossbows have a lot of power. In fact, they have so much power that it'd be pretty much impossible to aim them if you had to hold the weapon drawn yourself." Max braced the weapon and drew it back with a grunt, the muscles on his arms and neck standing out with the strain. But then the weapon was cocked and he relaxed. "The crossbow uses a clever mechanical system to allow you to store the power from drawing without having to maintain it. This gives you incredible control because the only strain you have to worry about is holding the weapon. Of course it trades a lot of speed for that. A bow can fire ten or twenty times more often than a crossbow, after all."

Max uncocked the crossbow and set it back down. "Today you're going to give some thought to which weapon you'd want for specific situations." He waved toward the back of the room which was suddenly a wide shooting range with dozens of moddable target stations. Everything from tin cans on a fence to simple bullseye targets to targets on moving tracks going back and forth in front and behind each other.

"You may form teams, of no more than three, if you wish. As soon as you, or your team, successfully complete all the target stations you are free to go."

"I hope you're not all hyper on candy or anything." And if Emma had been a handwavily because her player fell asleep candy-thieving cat, well, no one who valued their life should mention it.

"And if you are, suppress it, 'cause while I might be more than used to it, Emma isn't, and you don't want to deal with her," Sookie said cheerfully, shooting Emma an affectionate smile. "And hopefully you aren't sick from sugar, either, but if you are, we've got some words for you."

"So let's hear how you're feeling today," Emma said. "Think of it as therapy. Only free, and I can't promise we won't point and laugh if you gave yourself a stomach ache from candy."

Mr. Bond was nowhere to be seen this week. There was, however, a husky dog sitting next to where Kyle was standing. "Hey," Kyle greeted the class. "I'm pretty sure this is Mr. Bond, so he can't teach class today." When the dog wouldn't leave him alone and seemed a little too bright for a normal pup, he'd gone through a list of people he knew, asking if the dog was that person. Hey, whatever worked.

"I don't know much about anywhere, but I've accidentally been to a city in Canada called Vancouver, so we're going to go there today. I could only find a program for a part of the city called Stanley Park but there are walking tracks through the forest, an aquarium, some totem poles and some farm animals. There's a walking track all around the island that I'm going to check out or there's a tram that runs up and down this road here. I'll turn the program off at the end of the class, so go as far as you want."

The students would have all received an E-mail telling them to meet at the Danger Shop today, and when they got there, they'd find themselves on a dock with plenty of today's activity lined up behind them.

"Welcome to Coruscant," Jaina greeted them, not mentioning that um, it might look a little different than one or two people here might be used to seeing, thanks so very much Yuuzhan Vong. "This is the center of my galaxy, and where I guess I technically live. The planet is covered in cityscape, with air traffic going at all times of the day and night, as you can see if you look anywhere. You might be wondering what this has to do with spaceships. Well, nothing, really. Because what we're piloting today aren't really spaceships."
