Spaceships 101- 1st period- Week #9

The students would have all received an E-mail telling them to meet at the Danger Shop today, and when they got there, they'd find themselves on a dock with plenty of today's activity lined up behind them.

"Welcome to Coruscant," Jaina greeted them, not mentioning that um, it might look a little different than one or two people here might be used to seeing, thanks so very much Yuuzhan Vong. "This is the center of my galaxy, and where I guess I technically live. The planet is covered in cityscape, with air traffic going at all times of the day and night, as you can see if you look anywhere. You might be wondering what this has to do with spaceships. Well, nothing, really. Because what we're piloting today aren't really spaceships."

There was no hologram for them to check out today, because Jaina was able to walk right up to one of the speeders and tap its hull. "This is an airspeeder. Where you use cars here, this is what we use to get around over here. They work off repulsors, meaning you're up in the air, using skylanes just like you do in traffic in the ground here, and while I'm sure you'll be disappointed to hear this, these don't have weapons. And if you are disappointed, that's exactly why you're not getting weapons today.

"All I need you to do," Jaina continued, "is to get from this dock here to the Senate building two kilometers away. That's it. There's no waiting for your turn this time, you can all go at once, just get where you're trying to go by the end of the class period."

No, definitely not the Coruscant Tahiri was used to, as the look on her face showed. There was a lot less duracrete-eating algae for one, and a lot less destruction for another, but really? That was a good thing. Getting around via Vongformed waterways that led into giant living sewer systems that tried to digest you, or through the underlevels while an insane Dark Jedi was trying to kill you, or --

Okay, so Tahiri's experience with Coruscant was kind of bad-special. That was beside the point. The real question was, would she end up deciding air traffic was a better or worse way to get around the planet than, say, rooftop-running through abandoned sectors while accompanied by commandos with jetpacks?

And why did she feel a random, vague urge to steal a speeder and team up with Jaina on a high-speed chase?

Leia felt a pang at the sight of the senate building. She still couldn't help but feel guilty about taking care of things via holographic representation instead of being there in person to speak, even if it was safer this way.

With today being the anniversary of his mother's death, Ben was very conscientious about projecting a rather aggressive "I'm fine" vibe to a room full of Jedi.

When he heard what the assignment was, he wondered if he would be able to find a red speeder to drive.

This was far more familiar to Cally than the spacecraft they'd been flying. Even if the style wasn't quite the same as the personal transport at home, the concept was.

The traffic, though.... To not-coin a human phrase, wow.

Leia was accustomed to Coruscant traffic. This wasn't bad at all.

Ben drove like a sixteen year old with his own speeder--a little too fast, a little too close to other cars, and with the music up too loud.

It wasn't the speeder that gave Tahiri trouble; driving the speeder itself was easier than anything.

The traffic, on the other hand? It was a really, really good thing that a good three quarters of the swearing she was doing as the airlanes all gummed up like they'd been coated with blorash jelly was entirely unintelligible to most of the class. The speeder's paint job was lucky not to be peeling under that tirade.

This... was more why Ender had chosen this course in the first place.

He wasn't inclined towards weapons. He was inclined to figure out a complex pattern of dodging and weaving that would get him to his destination in time.

He cheated, of course. Well. For some definition of cheating.
