"I'm afraid we're still in Italy this week," Bond said as his students entered the Danger Shop, gesturing to city filled with canals lying below them. "Though to be fair, Venice did only become part of Italy proper within the last two centuries, spending the majority of the previous millennium as an independent nation state."

"But for once we're not here to talk history, as currently Venice is in the middle of the fifty-fourth International Festival of Contemporary Music, and a number of skilled artists in town for the Biennale, any one of which you may choose to spend the class listening to."

Once the class was assembled this week, Jaina got right to the point. "We're going to have a little bit of fun today. Hopefully," she said, showing them the image of this week's ship. "This is an A-wing. Now, I'll admit they're not the easiest things to fly. If you can't work the stabilizers, you'll end up in a spin, and you don't want to take too many hits in these things. But we're not worrying about that so much here. Instead we're focusing on the fact that the A-wings are fast and really maneuverable, which is good because today you're racing."

See, that even got a smile out of her. "Pair up if you want, otherwise I'll set you up against another A-wing in the sim," she went on. "Take some time to practice, see whether you think a roll is fun, whatever, and then you just have to beat the other person to the marker. You can try and overtake each other, just don't try to shoot the other person down unless you both agree to it. Getting killed when you were just trying to race kind of ruins some of the fun."

Today, Rinoa was not reading trashy romance novels. For once.

Instead, she was doing research on mean, heartless, cruel onions. Looking for other instances of them, in other worlds, so she had useful information. Like if they were likely to return, and if so, the most painful way to make them die.

"Yo, rookies!" Reno leaned back against his desk today, arms crossed over his chest as he surveyed the students heading into the classroom. No Danger Shop again, but knowing Reno, he was probably saving all of the good stuff for later in the semester.

Or else too lazy to muck about with programming this early in the morning. One of those.

"Today, we're gonna cover one of them things that all of the reserves groups have probably drilled into you good by now if you're a member, but we're gonna expand on it a bit, yo." He smirked faintly. "I know they got their little phone number exchange goin' on, and I'm gonna even agree, it's a damn good idea." Which had nothing to do with the fact that he was one of the founding members of the original group. Really.

But really, it's just scratchin' the surface. )

"I hope you all have finished your worksheets from last week about testing the equations on your friends," Farnsworth said by way of introduction, "because otherwise, you get a big fat F. I'll have you turn them in at the end of class, though, so, if you want to scramble to make things up while I'm lecturing, you can."

He was feeling so magnanimous today.

It's Bigger on the Inside! )

"Now, some people may make the argument that many of these space-dimension distortions are the work of 'magic,' but that's a load of poppycock!" He smack a hand on the board with the equations. "Scientists have worked hard to prove that it's scientifically possible. So, take some time, discuss amongst yourselves because I don't care, any experience you may have had with these and try to apply the equations that shows how its even mathematically impossible. Or make one up. I don't care, as long as it's mathematical sound."

When the students entered the classroom today, they'd see a quote written on the blackboard:

Weather is a great metaphor for life - sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, and there's nothing much you can do about it but carry an umbrella. ~Terri Guillemets

"Terri got it in one," Cindy said from her perch on her desk as soon as the bell rang. "Weather, in novels anyway, are almost always a metaphor for something. "

If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? Pilgrims. (The answers bees, smallpox, and syphilis will also be accepted). )

"Hey guys, thanks for signing up. I know you all from classes and around the school, but if you don't know each other, say hi and introduce yourself if you want. We're pretty much here to practice and learn climbing and jumping in an urban environment. A lot of people in this time period do it for fun and they call it Parkour. I learned growing up because it was what we had to do to get around. There's not much need for it here, but I want to keep up with it anyway. All the buildings on this side of the street are empty, so I thought we could start here." He hadn't asked anyone permission to use the area. The thought had never occurred to him. "We can use the ladders out the back to get up to the roof but if anyone wants to try another way to get up, do it. We can do this on our own or together, practice what we know or learn from each other. Whatever comes naturally. If you've never done this kind of thing before, the best way to learn is to try it. If you need anything though, ask. We can help each other out."

"Three days until Parents' Weekend, and most of you are still here? I'm impressed," Aly said teasingly. "Those of you who are new, don't worry. No one's died as a result of parental or other visitors. Embarrassment, I can't help you with. What I can do is-"well, technically she was going to probably start the embarrassment early, but whatever "- possibly give you some pointers on handling not just this weekend, but every time you need to establish a quick rapport with another person whether you need them as a contact or ally for your movement or just because you want your girlfriend's mom to like you.

She flipped the whiteboard around to reveal the writing on it.

Oh how I love the flirting classes )
