Spaceships 101- 1st period- Week #5

Once the class was assembled this week, Jaina got right to the point. "We're going to have a little bit of fun today. Hopefully," she said, showing them the image of this week's ship. "This is an A-wing. Now, I'll admit they're not the easiest things to fly. If you can't work the stabilizers, you'll end up in a spin, and you don't want to take too many hits in these things. But we're not worrying about that so much here. Instead we're focusing on the fact that the A-wings are fast and really maneuverable, which is good because today you're racing."

See, that even got a smile out of her. "Pair up if you want, otherwise I'll set you up against another A-wing in the sim," she went on. "Take some time to practice, see whether you think a roll is fun, whatever, and then you just have to beat the other person to the marker. You can try and overtake each other, just don't try to shoot the other person down unless you both agree to it. Getting killed when you were just trying to race kind of ruins some of the fun."

Leia wasn't familiar with this type of ship. She had to wonder just when they would show up for her.

Racing? In A-Wings?

Okay, yeah, Tahiri looked excited about that. She couldn't help it.

Ben was a bad influence, okay?

Ben's eyes lit up. A-Wings? Astral.

Momoko thought it was totally awesome that they were staying with faster ships! She was eager to try this A-wing and wondered how it differed from the B- and X-wings.

Hang out, talk, find a partner, do-si-do.

Just because she'd grown a couple of centimeters didn't mean Tahiri could stop wearing boots in the cockpit; she still couldn't reach the foot yokes all that well without them, and anyway, she'd be slagged if she had to go EV and ended up barefoot in hard vacuum, wouldn't she?

She was sitting on the floor, lacing up said boots with only the vaguest distasteful expression as she waited her turn.

"Nice shoes," Ben teased, grinning at her.

"Oh, shut up," Tahiri retorted. "You'd hate it too if I ended up losing my feet."

"Then you'd be really short," Ben observed, stepping carefully out of hitting distance.

Tahiri knew better, luckily, than to try and throw anything at him around the flight sim.

"Ben Skywalker, you gigantic pain," she said instead, pointing a finger at him (and laughing, which took all the threat out of it). "You are really asking for it today, aren't you?"

He smirked at her. "Why would you think that?"

"Because you're being an exceptional amount of a pain today," Tahiri informed him. "You're lucky you're cute, really."

"I hear that a lot," he said solemnly. He nodded his head towards the simulator. "Loser buys dinner?"

Tahiri shook her head and growled something in Tusken that, roughly translated, would be the sort of thing you called a much-loved but currently misbehaving pet.

"And ice cream for the next month." She'd been expecting this, yes. "Which does not mean cheating and using your ice cream maker if you get stuck with the tab."

"I make astral ice cream," he claimed erroneously.

"Oh, yeah?" Tahiri challenged, grinning. "Who'd you get to judge the taste-testing? A starved baby space slug?"

"Karla would kick you if she heard you call her that," Ben said, pretending to be aghast.

Tahiri's jaw went slack, and she stared at Ben for a second and a half, then started toward the sim.

"For that, Skywalker, you're going to wish you got close enough to taste my engine wash."

While she'd never been terribly interested in racing as a sport or speed in general, Cally had to admit that she was curious now, especially in the safe environment of a simulation. Which explained that thing where she was absently bouncing a little on the balls of her feet as she waited.

Momoko was looking for a possible partner and ~~targeted~~ spotted the new girl.

"Hi! You look like you can't wait to fly either!" Momoko gave a small wave as she grinned at her. "I'm Momoko! Want to race?"

Cally strongly suspected Momoko might have had more sugar in her coffee this morning than Cally had. This didn't, however, stop her from grinning back. "I think I'd rather like that, thank you. My name is Cally."

More sugar, probably yes, but Momoko skipped the coffee part.

"Awesome! It's always more fun with another person!" Her grin grew and she moved next to Cally, staying within sight of the sim so as not to miss their turn. "Hi Cally! I promise to go easy on you. Have you done much flying? Before this class, I mean."

"I was finishing off a Small Spacecraft course before I came here." Not the way it was meant to be finished off, though. "But I've not flown anything like these."

"Wow! So maybe I won't need to go easy on you after all?" Momoko was actually more excited about that prospect; someone she could maybe challenge?

"I think I've flown later models? I'm not sure how the names work. I mean, this is an A-wing and I've flown a B-Wing and an X-Wing... So hopefully it won't be that hard?" She tapped her cheek a moment, then shrugged. "Ah well, that's what the practice runs are for, right?"

"I think the X-Wing was a different line of ship entirely from this one -- but I'd not flown anything like that either, before last week." Cally nodded. "I could use the practice; I'm... competent, I suppose, when I've learned the functions, but I don't have a real gift for piloting."

"Ah!" Momoko blew a sigh and nodded. "I should probably study more about the different types and the building of them and stuff, huh? It's just so much more fun to fly them!"

Either pick another person or mod your simulated opponent. Who got to the marker first?

Momoko was in her A-wing and going over the controls briefly before the race started. She had to monitor everything herself?

"Okay. Uhm. Right. Let's see. Thrusters, uhm. Check. Stabilizers... Stabilizers... over there, okay, check. Ooh! Laser canons!"

Cally would be over here hoping those laser cannons were just for show; she'd no desire to try racing and shooting at each other. One first -- and one area of concentration -- at a time.

One practice run later, she had an answer for Jaina on the subject of whether rolls were fun: Ergggghblgh.

Still, a few moments to stabilize herself and chase down the wooziness, and Cally was still in the game. "I'm ready when you are," she sent over her comm system.

Momoko was giddy: lasers and a fast ship?! She wouldn't be using them in a race, but it was so awesome!

"Totally ready!" Momoko chirped back and sat back to wait for the start signal. As soon as it went, so did she. Into a spin, that is.

"Augh! Stupid... Need rear stabiliz... Which was that... Ah!" She pulled herself out of the spin and back into the racing 'lane' but had lost valuable time.

Cally was unfamiliar with a certain story about a turtle and a rabbit, but she was flying as if she knew it, in the slow-and-steady sense. Not too slow, though - when she realized Momoko's ship had righted itself, she punched up the velocity a bit so as not to lose the advantage.

Doing that and keeping track of all the monitors was hard; her path was drifting slightly out of what passed for a lane, towards an eventual intersection course if one of them didn't shift.

And once you all leave, she is going to train some more.

It's hot, my head hurts, and I got to watch earthquake talk on Twitter all night as I was trying to write class, so I might have just slapped it together oops.
