"I see you've all survived our little adventure from last week," said Farnsworth at the beginning of class, not even bothering to mask his disappointment. If giant caves and monsters couldn't kill them, he'd just have to revert back to good old fashioned boring them to death.

He went to the blackboard and wrote: Today's Lesson: Superduper Symmetrical String Theory and, below it, a great mass of goobledy gock formulas, and a diagram of what looked like dog, but a dog covered in a giant dog-sized sock tied with string.

He went on to explain a whole mess of information regarding how the superduper symettrical string theory, or SD SdT from here on in, is all about a quantum theory of gravity, which is different than a quantum theory of, say, electromagneticism, nuclear forces, or your mom. Essentially, it is focused on the idea that the universe could never be smaller than the size of a string, at which point it would actually begin expanding, and that no measurable differences can be detected between strings that wrap around dimensions smaller than themselves and those that move along larger dimensions.

Which all made enough sense a baby could figure it out and was surely helped along by Farnsworth's drawings, which appeared like they belonged more on a Rorchacht test than a science classroom.

"Now," Farnsworth continued without pause, "our physical space is observed by complete idiots to have only three large dimensions and, taken together with duration as the fourth dimension, a physical theory must take this into account. However, nothing prevents a theory from including more than 4 dimensions, you know. String theory here consistency requires spacetime to have 10 dimensions. We have four here." He drew something on the board. "Where are the other six?"

"So your assignment today," he turned back to the class with such a deceptively kind smile, "is to create one of those missing six dimensions. Won't that be fun?"

"And when you're finished with that, I have this very informative video for you to watch and, next week, I'd like you to write a report about its main points and how it showcases the theories on the mathematics of quantum neutrino fields discussed thus far."

Was that a TV in gym class today? Why yes, yes it was! Because TV watching, as we all know, is one of the healthiest sports one can partake in. True story.

"Today we're gonna be watching meta forRudy," Guy said, pushing the tape--who used a tape anymore?--into the VCR. "It's about a scrawny kid over coming odds to try an' play football."

It was touching, damn it.

"So, sit back and enjoy. Just don't fall asleep."

Reyes.

Artie was in very high spirits today, skipping back and forth between two large plastic trashcans filled to the brim with various colorful objects.

"Greetings, students! Today we have the pleasure of playing . . ." He paused, possibly for effect, possibly because he had to bounce in place for a long moment and strike as many awkward muscle poses as possible. "DODGEBALL!"

"Two teams!" He declared, standing exaggeratedly straight, now, shoulders back far enough that he was starting to arch backwards, then started to march back and forth before the students. "One will be over there!" He pointed to one side of the clearing. "One will be over here," and then to the other side of the clearing. The two trashcans marked out a line between the two. "Ammo!" He patted one of the trashcans. "Throw them at each other. Dodge them. If you get hit, you're out! Until you're back in again."

Artie's games of dodgeball tended to be sort of never ending.

"Today's competition shall be between. . . ." That was totally a pause for dramatic effect. Or possibly quick thinking. "Nighthawks! Versus!" And there he went bouncing and posing again, and were there a camera, it might have zoomed right on in on his face as he finished: "CANTALOUPE!"

"And don't forget to have fun!"

Rinoa was oddly quiet during her shift today. Thinking about Squall, and what Jono had said, and what she was supposed to do now, anyway.

Luckily, books were perfect for when someone was feeling oddly quiet. She was going to find a locked-room mystery and see if she could solve it before the last chapter.

"Hey, everyone." Dinah waved from the front of the class, looking mildly confused. "Dr. Horrible's texted me that he can't get to class today." [There had been an incident with a Sticky Ray that had a few bugs still in the system. Not that Dinah knew that.] "But he sent me the lesson plan. So apparently like last week's design of your, uh, secret lair, this week? You're working on your 'tools of leadership.'"

She pointed to the computers with various design programs, art supplies, Legos, and various arts-and-crafts extras on the tables.

"He says here 'anything that will assist you in enlightening the masses, transport you quickly to your destinations, protect you from fascist authorities who don't appreciate your genius, and that has a remote control or requires you to wear a gas mask.'" She paused and added, "And if it explodes, I'm sure he'll be thrilled."

The Doctor's TAs were noticeably absent and that bothered him. That was only one reason why he looked irritable as he paced the room that looked like your average generic high-tech control room. The other reason, well, one of the other reasons was the topic at hand.

"Compassion. If you don't know what it is, look in the Wikipedia and don't bother me today. If you do know what it is, then you'll understand what we're doing today. Any species can develop enough technologically to be considered advanced. It's the social development, the interconnectedness with the rest of the universe and how one holds oneself in standing with the rest of existence that truly determines how advanced a species is.

Having compassion and exercising compassion differ. One is a feeling, a built-in empathy, an emotional response. The other is a choice, a moral dilemma that many of you will have to face at some point. Exercising compassion isn't easy. It shouldn't always be. It's the choices you make when it isn't easy that make compassion as important as it is."

The Doctor gestured around him. "All hypothetical here, but the emotion is real. We're in a control room under Fandom Island." It wasn't a recreation of the actual control room; this was just something that looked fancy and high-tech enough to do the job. "This is what makes it tick. It's what keeps the island as an access point to the many, many different universes and time periods. You'd need an incredible amount of power to keep that going as long as it has. Ever wonder what does it?" He pointed to a pulse beam that kept shooting electricity into what looked like a large, exposed brain.
