Sophie had listened to Radio, and suspected no one would really be concentrating on schoolwork today. Not even amusing schoolwork. Those with family or others visiting would be thinking about them; those who didn't, would be thinking about it too.

"Today, we have a TV day. A choice of films; The Girl Nikki. A spy film with several double-crosses. Cancellation Slip. A series about a spy abandoned by his people. Bullseye. A freelance bodyguard who has to be a human chameleon to accomplish his objective."

"Choose any of the films or series mentioned, and point out a confidence strategy that you can use in the future."

[ooc: ocd up, and due to Field of Dreams we have movie day!]

When Rick had informed his class to meet him in the Danger Shop and unlike last week, he was actually there on time. Albeit without the coffee and pastries.

He was also wearing the full protective gear for fencing and carrying an Épée. "The pen might be mightier than the sword," he began. "But the sword is just as much fun, and also provides a good example of what I'm talking about in using your experiences to add to the creative process. Now there's a couple of different things for you to do today, you can put on some protective gear and practice fencing against each other or the Danger Shop. There are also various kinds of swords for you to look at and handle."

For maybe the first time ever in a class, Rick's tone hardened into what Alexis called his Dad Voice. "The safeties are on, but you should still treat everything in this room like real weapons and not like toys, especially those of you who decide to fence each other. Don't be idiots or we'll spend the rest of the summer in the library doing research. Real boring research."

"What I want you to do while you're doing all this is to take note of what you're doing, what it feels it, then start imagining the what ifs," Rick continued in his regular voice. "For example, try fencing, then compare the weight of an Épée to a small sword or rapier, and consider how much more effort you'd need to use them instead. Think about how you might use a katana differently to a claymore. Notice how your field of vision is changed in the fencing mask and imagine how much less you'd see in the visor slits of a knight's helmet. You get my drift."

"Now by next week, I'd like you to all have written something using the prompt 'sword-fight'. You can interpret the prompt however you like, and it doesn't have to be long, it can be a haiku if you want, but you have to use your experience in today's class to inform your writing."

[OOC: OCD up.]

There was clay out, and Steve looking slightly nervous. He was in uncharted territory, for him, here. "Good morning, everyone," he said. "Today we're going to be making a basic slab pot. This is a very simple form of pottery, one that's been around for thousands of years, so...we're going to give it a go." He proceeded to explain how it worked, going through step-by-step, and yes, he had learned how from the internet. He was pretty modern that way sometimes.

"And then," he wrapped up, "of course, you can customize your pot in whatever way you see fit. We'll save firing them for another day. Have fun!"

Again, the class met in the Danger Shop. This time, when the students stepped in they found themselves on the desolate floor of a long deserted building, several stories up. At one end, there is a large open window and a Barrett M82 sniper rifle with gillie netting around it. The only other furniture in the room are another set of padded benches, and a single table. Price and Ashley stand behind that table.

He then pointed to a student at random.

"You, you get to start."

Fraser was fully aware that the island had done something extraordinary again just by listening to radio alone. He didn't understand exactly what happened but it seemed to be a surprising and happy event. He was pleased with that.

And there's a lecture under here! )

To say Dean was distracted this week would be like saying the Atlantic was a little wet. But being the teacher meant he couldn't actually blow off class to spend time with his dead mother, so he was present and more or less focused when the class filed in.

"Hi guys," he greeted everyone. "I know that a lot of you are in the middle of freaking out over visits from people who shouldn't be able to visit -- I'm right there with ya, really -- but let's do our best to just buckle down and concentrate for the duration of the class and then we can all get back to our freakouts." He took a deep breath and did his best to take his own advice.

"So last week, we did the introductions and most of you did pretty good imitations of a stoplight," he said, managing a grin. "Which, hopefully, if you get one thing out of this class, it'll be that this stuff is nothing to be embarrassed about.

"To get you started on that, this week we'll be doing what I affectionately call 'The Talk.' )

Hawkeye had contacted all of the students this week to let them know to meet him in his office. There were sandwiches and cold drinks on the desk and everyone had a chair to sit on. "Eat! Drink! I promise it's not cafeteria food. Not every week is going to be like last week. Unfortunately, history says that some weeks will be like last week. Sometimes they'll even be like this week with the visitors some people have walking around. You're more likely to find yourself having to put your friends back together than most high school students, and I'm sorry to say that you a proportionally high number of the students here have had to deal with losing someone they love. Personally, I hope you never have to use anything you learn in this class, but in case you do, let's make sure we cover topics you want to learn. Talk to me. Talk to each other. The syllabus is as flexible as a gymnast made of dough. That's pretty flexible."
