The Five Senses | Period 1 | Friday | July 16
Fraser was fully aware that the island had done something extraordinary again just by listening to radio alone. He didn't understand exactly what happened but it seemed to be a surprising and happy event. He was pleased with that.
"Good morning," he greeted once everyone had gathered around the main campfire. "It seems the island's decided to be its unpredictable self. I hope you all are enjoying your visitors if you received them. Enjoy your time with them."
He nodded at them all once. "Today, we're going to be talking about your sense of sight. For many, the sense of sight is the most important sense they can use. It's almost a gateway sense. It sees colors, sees people, sees movement, sees far, sees near, sees anything depending on how strong your sense of vision is and if you know where to look. Improving how you see things isn't always a matter of improving the strength of your eyesight. Most people are stuck in one certain way of seeing things. Many, many people just see in broad strokes. For instance, if I were seeing in broad strokes, I would start describing the color of each student's hair, their clothing, and their expressions. That's easy to see. That's right in front of me and I don't have to look closer."
He paused and clasped his hands behind his back. "What you have to remember is there is more to each of you rather than what I just listed. One of you might have a small stain on your shirt near the side. I would only see that if I trained my eyes to carefully examine. One of you might be hiding an injury. That's a matter of examining posture and changes in facial expressions. It's an easy thing to say, I know. The easiest way to challenge your eyes is to take away your other senses. So, that's what we're going to do today. Behind me, there are noise canceling headphones, gloves, and noseplugs. Those are going to eliminate almost all your other senses. You're going to have to rely on your eyesight. Everyone please take a pair of headphones, gloves and noseplugs. Once you've donned those, I want you to wander around the cabin area and look. Try to see things you hadn't ever seen before. Follow your eyes. Rely only on them. If I see you about to hurt yourselves, I'll stop you but this is practice sharpening your eyes because they are the only thing you'll have access to. Go."

And trying not to see the dragon lurking around the back of the cabins, keeping an eye on Hiccup.
Re: During the Lecture [TFS 07/16]
Which all really just said that she spent the lecture looking like a fairly typical grouchy teenager.
Re: During the Lecture [TFS 07/16]
Maybe he should say something to Mr. Fraser.
Yeah, like he couldn't already imagine what his parents would say to that idea.
Re: During the Lecture [TFS 07/16]
It was probably a good thing that Bruce was not teaching this class.
Class Activity | Sense of Sight [TFS 07/16]
Re: Class Activity | Sense of Sight [TFS 07/16]
Hiccup glanced around, trying to decide what to look at, and then made his way over to one of the cabins, studying the door, crouching down to stare at the lock and the handle before moving across to study the hinges. It was hard to resist touching, even with the gloves on, but it was fascinating. Not being able to touch made it much harder to figure things out, but he'd never really looked at the hardware on a door before.

It was more than a little disconcerting to not have all her senses at their sharpest, but... interesting, the way certain details became sharper to her eyes.
Re: Class Activity | Sense of Sight [TFS 07/16]
He glanced around for a moment, trying to pick what he should study and finally simply sat down on one of the logs surrounding the campfire. The earth was a scramble of footprints and he tried to find a pattern.
Not that he knew anything of tracking. He wasn't that kind of cliché.

So she was only . . . vaguely sulky as she watched the wind move through the branches of the trees. It was kind of neat, actually, especially when a flock of birds suddenly took off all at once.
Re: Class Activity | Sense of Sight [TFS 07/16]
She kind of wished she had her camera.
Re: Class Activity | Sense of Sight [TFS 07/16]
It was all on Clark's eyes...that could see through all the layers of everything. Honestly, it was cool to have an excuse to play around with his vision without some bad guy involved.
Re: Class Activity | Sense of Sight [TFS 07/16]
He did look at a cabin very carefully in an attempt to figure out what kind of wood it was made of, though.
But he didn't lick it.

Re: The TA's [TFS 07/16]
Blind Seer, as the name might suggest, was equally as smug about his eyesight.
