It was another Tuesday, and another library shift, which meant that Anemone was behind the counter with her nose in some surfing magazines, content to imagine away the cold outside.

Alysha sat at her desk as the students came in, flipping through what might've looked like an art book if any of the students looked closerly.

She looked up right as the clock flipped to eight.  "Everyone have their coffee today?" she asked.  "Or, I dunno, gone for a run to wake up?"  Screw running, ugh.

"Just so everyone knows, Edmund Pevensie and Tony Foster are the TAs for this class.  Which means if you have a question, they might be able to help with it, and if I'm not around, they'll get to run the class from my notes."  She grinned.  "Hopefully both gentlemen can read chicken scratching."

She stood up, moving around to the front of the desk and leaned back against it.  "I said last week we'd get to introductions, and here we are.  What I'd like to hear from all of you is your name, your class, and two things you can do better than other people.  Can be magic or special abilities, doesn't have to be and one thing you're bad at.  So - I'm Alysha Gale which most of you should already know.  I'm 24 which means I already had to deal with high school, and I bake the best rhubarb pie in my family -" wow, Auntie Ruby would argue with that, but she wasn't there "- and I can identify just about any Sumerian artifact out there."  Thank you, ROM and your crappy grant funding.  "I'm pretty crap at making potions."

"Also I want to know what you think the worst thing a person can do is."

Because that was really the kicker sometimes.

She pointed to a random student.  "You first."

"Good morning, class," Bond began as the last student arrived at the steps of the school, apparently unconcerned by the way his breath was misting in the air as he spoke. "I trust you're all sufficiently recovered from last week's class."

"Today's class is going to be held over near the preserve," he said. "So we'll be heading over there in a moment, but first I'd like you all to collect a pair of gloves from the container to my right, as we're going to be running an obstacle course and they'll come in handy there. We'll also be working in pairs today, with one person running the course while the other spots them, then swapping over, so I'd also advise you to start looking for a partner."

Bond looked around to make sure they'd gotten it, then started off at a slow jog. "Well, if you'll all follow me then."

"We're going to start today by talking about your final," Cindy announced as soon as class began. "I know it seems like a long way away, but if you look at the syllabus I handed out last week, you'll realize it's only about fourteen weeks away and the nature of the final requires a lot of advanced prep work." The grin she flashed the class was more mischievous than evil, though they were welcome to interpret it any way they liked. "One of the things I want to stress in this class is that even though the concept of the heroic journey has its roots in works written millennia ago, it's a concept that is still at work today, influencing your own culture. Thus, to really bring that home, you final exam will consist of an essay to be handed in the final day of class. To prepare for your essay--in addition to coming to class and such--you'll be watching all seven seasons of Wendy the Werewolf Stalker. Does Wendy embark on a masculine heroic journey? A feminine heroic journey? Both? Neither? Drawing upon examples from the show and concepts we cover in class, that's the question you'll be answering." She smiled at them again. "Now you understand why I'm telling you this now. Seven seasons, fourteen weeks. You're all in high school and are capable of doing the math."

She leaned against her desk to continue. "Should you decide, for whatever reason, that you don't wish to base your final exam on Wendy that's fine. However, by the midterm, I will need a major work that you would prefer to write on instead. This will give me enough time to familiarize myself with the work in question and decide upon its suitability. Best to give me three choices, just in case your first and second choice don't work out."

She straightened again. "One last bit of prep before we get to class--Anemone? Blysse? You're the TAs for this class. Please feel free to see me after class if you'd like to discuss what that entails. That's settled; let's get to learning, shall we? )

"That's a lot of information in a very few lines," Cindy said, aware her students might argue the 'very few' part. "So let's talk."

Max had spent a large chunk of the past week rethinking precisely how he was going to run this class with all the... women in it. He hadn't really come up with a solution he liked, but it was class time now so it was apparently time to go with a solution he didn't much care for.

"Welcome back, everyone," he began as he looked around at his students. "This class is intended to be a practical one, but for us to do that we're going to have to be candid with one another. That, however, requires trust, and we don't all know one another that well." He quirked an eyebrow, wondering if anyone was going to challenge that assertion. "We're going to try to remedy that." He grinned suddenly before adding, "The trust part."

"You're going to pair up. Then each of you is going to share a deeply private secret with the other one. That way each of you will know that if you violate the trust of the other students in this class, someone else here holds a serious piece of information to punish you with. If the person you're partnered with judges your secret to be insufficiently powerful, they can demand another, so you're better off sharing one major thing than being forced to go through a dozen things that almost qualify."

Max let a hard gaze drift slowly across the room, letting it rest on each student until he felt he'd driven home how serious he was. "Understand this: by receiving these secrets you're being entrusted with something important. Violating that trust is not something I will tolerate. The only reason we're doing this is to help everyone to feel like the can be candid because they'll know that everyone has shared something here they don't want spread around."

He gestured to the handwavy list he had up. "I've assigned partners randomly. Find yours and get to it. I'll be stopping by to check on how each of you are doing."

"Oh, and Pendragon, Cauthon, I want to see each of you after class."

"Welcome back," Alex said, nodding at her students. "Since last week went so well, I thought it best if we dive right in. So this week we're going to be discussing capital punishment. Capital, in this case, refers to the head. As in, your head, and the State's ability to separate it from your body. We're talking about the death penalty: a government executing its own citizens."

Today's classroom was set up as a farmer's market. Under the enchanted sky (today a dull, cloudy grey, as Sirius was a bit homesick for the winters at home), students would find various bins full of produce--potatoes, and cabbages--as well as some more unusual objects, like logs and sticks.

"Today we deal with enemies who prefer to hide in plain sight," Sirius began when the class had finally assembled. "Since this is your first practical exercise in this class, we're starting you off small. Each of these bins contains completely ordinary objects, as well as the magical creatures who resemble them. None of them are particularly dangerous, as these things go, but they will take a chance to nip at your fingers, so wear the gloves if you'd like."

"These creatures," Remus continued, "all might hail from our world, but they employ camouflage such as what's found in the Muggle world. Many animals have markings that resemble their habitat, so as to hunt their prey or escape their predators. In the case of these creatures, they disguise themselves so as to lure unsuspecting people into touching them. Today, we'd like for you to differentiate dugbogs from logs, bowtruckles from sticks, gnomes from potatoes and Chinese Chomping Cabbages from...cabbages." He flicked his wand, and a stack of parchment floated from desk to desk, depositing a description of creatures at each.
