Someday, Algren would learn that it was a good idea to review so-called 'educational viewing material' before letting Jim play it for the class. Yes indeed.

Today was not that day.

But it made Jim happy, at least. And that's all that matters.

"So, today we'll be taking a little break from class to watch a movie. Think of it as the modern take on sexual mores," Jim said, smiling far too much for this to bode well for Nathan.

Algren eyed Jim warily. He didn't trust that smile. At all.

"All I know is that it's been deemed educational by a certain colleague of mine who shall remain unnamed." A beat. "So, if it isn't, don't blame this one on me."

Jim just rolled his eyes. "It's a movie day, no one is going to blame anyone. Just start the movie."

Algren hesitated a moment, partly because he was still highly wary, and partly because he wouldn't know what to do with a DVD menu screen if his life depended on it. But, after a bit of wrestling and some cranky glowering at the remote, he managed to locate the "OK" button and on came the educational movie of choice. Canadian Pie.

Jim was a dead man.

"Well," Aeryn said when everyone was in their seats, "I wish I had the foresight to be able to have prepared you adequately for what happened last week. I'm sure if you weren't a female who turned into a male, you knew someone who did, or at least heard about it, so I want to take a moment to check in and see what it was like for everyone." And she might have been hoping Karla made it through okay, shhh.

Once the discussion was over, she continued, "This weekend is Parents Weekend. You may or may not have someone coming, but I'll have you know that I never had anyone show up for me, and yet I still ended up dealing with other people's friends and family. And there will always be someone who doesn't want certain things to make it back to those from home. Unfortunately there are no classes to ease them into it. Some of you might be fine telling your family everything that's going on here, and that is a good thing. Others might not have that luxury, and it takes some talking around things sometimes. I don't suggest outright lying. If you get caught, it's going to be bad. But there are ways to stretch the truth. Each of you is going to choose a topic, and pair up in order to try and explain it to the other person in a way that would not make anyone panic. Consider it practice."

There had been handwavy flyers around campus about the assembly today. As students entered, Sweets stood on the stage and tugged at his collar. He was a little nervous about the whole public speaking thing.

"Bonjour class," Colette greeted as usual, shutting the door behind her precisely on time. She passed out a handout with recipes attached before beginning her lecture.

One saucy class, geddit? )

After his success with toast last week, Jonas had spent his free time trying his toaster out with a few other things. He'd found that bread worked well but crackers did not. That had been a gigantic mess and Jonas had felt sheepish enough to not touch the toaster for a few days.

But, he'd gotten over that and tried bread again, this time adding peanut butter once the bread had been toaster and packing it for a lunch. So, that's where he was now, prodding experimentally at the sandwich and wondering if he should eat the apple first. The apple was green, something he hadn't seen before but he'd been assured it was ripe.

Food examination and consumption was a lengthy process for Jonas but he enjoyed it. Food was a small but integral part of his memory that he was building.

"The thing about the Great War was," Mitchell said, sounding both upbeat and subdued at the same time - no mean feat, "That nothing really got solved in the end. We saw a bit of that last week, but... there's a reason it's called World War I these days." He brought up his mug of coffee, and sipped. "Versailles might have ended it, but now everyone was looking to a world that was ruined, dirty, and messed-up. No wonder it spawned Film Noir - quite possibly the most cynical movie genre we've ever had, unless you count summer blockbusters - and the people who were young back then..."Cut for TL;dr )

"And then next week," he said, cheerfully, "We'll be talking about the German bloke we happily repressed to mute the whole time."

Yes, there was a lesson in here. Mitchell was subtle.

Visitors to the library would find it rather quiet today. Not just library-quiet, but uncommonly quiet. Especially for a day that had Anemone as a library aide.

That was because the library aide was flitting about the stacks - literally - while Gulliver oversaw the front desk. He'd even managed to get the computer started up, and was currently dozing next to the book scanner.

Being a panduppy was very, very hard. Especially when your charge was flightier than usual.

The Fandom High Library was open; watch out for dive-bombing swallowtails.

[ACK LATE. I kept getting confused and thinking today was Monday all day. Plz to be modding your library services.]
