Assembly [Auditorium - After Classes]

There had been ~~handwavy~~ flyers around campus about the assembly today. As students entered, Sweets stood on the stage and tugged at his collar. He was a little nervous about the whole public speaking thing.

Once everyone was seated, he stepped up to the podium and waited for people to quiet down.

"Good afternoon. For those of you I haven't met, I'm Dr. Lance Sweets and I'm the guidance counselor here at Fandom High. As guidance counselor, I'm here as a resource for all of you for pretty much anything you need assistance with. I can provide regular therapy, career counseling and mediation services. Today, however, I'm here to talk to you about teenage sexuality. Now, I know that there are several classes dedicated to sexual education, so I'm just going to hit on a few of the main points and then open the floor for a question and answer session."

Sweets might regret that last part, given some of the students in Fandom.

"The most important thing I can tell you is that sex is a natural, healthy behavior. Many religions teach that sex before marriage is sinful or that sex is only for procreation. That mindset leads many people to think that having sexual desires is bad or wrong and they feel guilty for having them. Your bodies are nothing to be ashamed of and having sexual desires is perfectly normal."

He paused for a moment to let that sink in.

"One safe way to explore those feelings is through masturbation. In fact, learning what kind of touches make you feel good can only improve your shared sexual experiences. Plus there is no chance of catching sexually transmitted diseases and no chance of pregnancy with masturbation. Embarking on a sexual relationship with a partner is something you should consider seriously because of those risks. A good rule of thumb to figuring out if you're ready for a sexual relationship is whether or not you can discuss sex with your potential partner. In a mature, responsible sexual relationship, you and your partner should discuss your sexual histories. And if your partner is of the opposite sex, you should have a conversation about birth control methods."

No one had told Sweets about the yearly post-prom kid invasions, or he would have mentioned that.

"Of course, if you decide to have a sexual relationship with someone of the same sex, pregnancy isn't a concern. There is still a possiblity of passing along STDs though. A lot of teens may find themselves experiencing confusion about their sexuality. Many people are raised in heteronormative societies and feel there is a stigma attached to bisexuality or homosexuality. Finding yourself attracted to someone of your sex is perfectly normal and there is nothing wrong with exploring those feelings as long as you are open and honest with your partner. Communication is the key to any sexual relationship."

Except the ones that were the result of lots of alcohol, but he wasn't talking about that.

"There's also nothing wrong with abstaining from sex. Some people sign pledges or wear purity rings to indicate their intention to not have sexual intercourse before marriage. Some schools have celibacy clubs where like-minded teens can support each other in those decisions and provide positive peer influence to counteract any negative peer pressure someone may experience for their choice."

He wasn't going to mention the school of thought of 'anything but'.

"There are a number of pamphlets on tables near the doors for you to pick up on your way out. They provide more information about purity rings along with various birth control methods, information about STDs, and information about coming to terms with your sexuality. There is also a selection of free condoms you can take and the clinic always has a supply of condoms available. Now I'll open the floor for questions."

Angela wasn't sure if these things were usually compulsory or not, but she'd be here either way, because these were always entertaining in some capacity. Better than doing nothing at all, that was for sure.

Oh, and it was doubly entertaining when you knew the guy leading it was your future work colleague and friend. That too.

Angela was of the impression that the kind of sex lecture that would be had in school was the type that would start, continue, and end with "Just don't do it."

As the lecture went on, the look of stern disapproval on her face would get sterner and more disapproving, and by the time he got to masturbation, Angela would be facepalming and looking for the exit.

But to start with she thought it was a good idea! To start!

Since Hannibal didn't have anything going on, he brought himself down to the assembly just to see what the doctor had to say. Overall, it was stuff he knew and practiced but still a good way to pass the time.

Though, the doctor looked like he was about twelve. Hannibal wondered if he'd been transformed into someone younger or something and was really some fifty year old dude.

Karla blinked. Wait--they needed an assembly for this stuff? At least she could agree with all the points he made. Still, this world's take on sex and sexuality was always going to leave her boggling.

And this was in Fandom. If she ever visited the Midwest, her brain would explode.

"Two classes and an assembly?" Mat murmured. "Is there really nothing else around here to occupy people's minds?"

Karla turned towards Mat and grinned. "Clearly not. And yet, people still aren't getting it. I'm in one of those two classes now and I get more information watching my classmates turn interesting colors than I do from the lectures. It's like they find everything embarrassing. Or it's all brand new." She shook her head. "It just doesn't make sense to me."

"Oh, half of my friends would swallow their tongues listening to this lecture, and that is if they weren't stomping on stage to box the man's ears for mentioning this sort of information in mixed company," Mat said with a laugh. "But it's not this bloody difficult to figure out, is it?"

"Why would they be upset for him mentioning it in mixed company?" Karla asked, intrigued. "It's the same information for males and females, right? Why say it twice? But, no, it shouldn't be this hard to figure out." She laughed. "On the other hand, do you really want a dorm full of people fumbling through trying to figure this out on their own?"

Emma would have a fit if that were the case.

"Burn me, no," Mat said. "I thought my two friends at home were better than I was at understanding women, but one of them has ended up married to a bloody noblewoman who would stick a knife in my for looking at her, and the other has managed to tangle himself up with a different woman who is far too fond of knives and one who is going to be a bloody queen." He grinned. "Maybe they should have heard this lecture."

"I don't know," Karla said with a smile. "I think finding an aristo female who can actually use a knife is an impressive feat. I'd rather have my friend married to someone like that than someone who spends all her time thinking about clothing and shoes." She shuddered. "Though I'd have to question your friend's taste, if he liked females like that."

And then she gave him a sly grin. "And depending on the looks you were giving her, she might have a reason."

Then the rest of what Mat said sank in. "Wait--your other friend is involved with two females at once? And they're okay with that?"

Polygamy hadn't really caught on in Kaeleer.

Well, three, but Mat didn't know about Min. Rand was...special. "I don't think so," Mat said. "Before I ended up here, I was watching to make sure the one with the knives didn't bloody skewer the sniffing blonde one." He frowned. "Rand won't be happy if either of them end up dead. He'll probably find a way to blame it on me, even though it's his fault he ended up dandling two girls on his knees."

"I'd think your time might have been better served making sure the stabby one didn't skewer your friend," Karla said, shaking her head. "Darkness knows I would run out of patience after a while. And I'm kind of interested in what he's doing, if he's been leaving you to babysit a catfight in the making."

"Oh, he's trying to rule," Mat paused to think about it, "three bloody nations, not to mention the Aiel as we all hurtle toward the end of the Age and the Dark One escaping to kill us all and remake the world in his image. I can't figure out why he thought he had time for women at all."

"Especially not two women!" Karla laughed. "Well, he's ambitious, I'll have to give him that. I don't think I'd be able to handle a relationship when I go back home, and I'll only be ruling one Teritory."

"Or he's going mad," Mat said, then winced a little. Because Rand would go mad. It probably wouldn't be attached to his terrible taste in women, though. He shook his head to clear that thought. "What do you think about sneaking out of here early?"

"I think it's a far better plan then staying here much longer," Karla replied, grinning. "Because I might start laughing at other people's reactions and that probably wouldn't be good for morale."

An Elven finger poked her in the back of the neck.

"Is that an Elven finger I feel?" Karla asked without turning around. She wouldn't be able to teel an Elven finger from a human one, especially without looking at it, but Leda's psychic scent was distinctive.

"Yes it is." Leda whispered in her ear, leaning forward. "Sorry I missed your party." There was no hint of suggestiveness in her tone, it was pure apology. Only the afore mentioned psychic scent would give any indication as to one of the reasons for the apology. "But I wasn't feeling well." Understatment of the year?

This was precisely the sort of thing Hayley wished they were told back at her old school.

She listened to the whole thing with rapt attention.

Priestly slouched down in his seat and tried to look coolly disinterested in the assembly.

It was good information, he had to admit that. It was just that he didn't think it applied to him, since his girlfriend had been made to move back home to Connecticut, which meant no more sex for him.

It was a very sad state of affairs.

Having learned about sex, er, firsthand, this was all rather interesting information for Aravis. At least in the sense that much of the vocabulary was new to her. She didn't need to be told that having desires was normal. She'd been here two years, thank you.

In any case, she wasn't listening raptly exactly, but she was taking note of the information that seemed new, and silently wishing that the poor man giving the lecture would relax a bit. This was terrible speaking. Too dry for her tastes. He really should have made it more exciting somehow.

Well... it was informative. But that didn't stop Eleanor from nearly sticking her face in her notes to keep her blushing from setting the place on fire.

Leda watched, trying not to laugh.

Sam was exactly the kind of person who went to assemblies without being forced, but he was surprised by how pro-sex it was, compared to the kinds of things he was used to hearing and seeing when it came to teen sex.

Why was Leda here? Because it sounded interesting. She wanted to see how many people fled maybe. Or she was just looking for her friends.

After the lecture

Hayley had a question.

"What about sex with aliens?" she asked. Not that she particularly had the desire, she was just intrigued.

Right, Sweets should have expected a question like that in Fandom.

"Uh, in what regards?" he asked, hoping for some clarification.

"Is it okay?" Hayley asked.

"I don't see why not," Sweets said. "But you would definitely need to talk about birth control and diseases since they likely are different for, uh, different species."

"Right," Hayley said. "...what about people from different times?"

"I think that as long as there is open and honest communication about your expectations, sex between any two people is okay," Sweets said.

"Right," Hayley said. "...only two people?"

That question left Sweets standing on stage, speechless, mouth gaping like a guppy.

"Uh... well... uh... that's not typical in most modern Earth cultures," he stammered. "But sticking with the open and honest communication is your best bet."

That would be Leda hunched over with giggles.

Hannibal browsed through a few of the pamphlets and eventually picked up a few of them just for some reading material when he was bored. He bypassed anything to do with abstinence considering, well, that time was well passed.

Sam glanced through the pamphlets, trying not to make faces at the really embarrassing ones, and smiled when he spotted the ones for the Gay Straight Alliance Network. He grabbed two of them, one for him, and one for Gabrielle, and then flipped through the rest to see what else he could find.

Pings may be slow as I am hoping to (a) get a little more sleep and (b) need to do some packing today. But have fun!
