Once again the class met as handwavily instructed in the computer lab. Barney was dressed in a tan suit with pink shirt and tie, ever on the prowl should one of the other, hot teachers be lurking around the building.

"There are certain points in the year when Fandomites may notice a decided lack of hotties out and about in the bars of this town. Research has led me to conclude that the chicks have simply switched venues, preferring to cast their cleavage at millions of strangers on the internet than at you and your cohorts." Barney paced the room, mostly intending this lecture for the supposed dudes in the audience who were lacking in many skills he thought every Bro could use, but that was an entirely different class.

"Afternoon, guys," Daisy greeted the class with a smile and the slightest of limps; she was feeling grateful to have the counters to lean on a little. Still, despite being injured and having to be at the station early today, she'd managed to find time to bake muffins. Chocolate ones. OR WERE THEY?

They weren't, but Daisy wasn't going to say anything yet. It was sort of impressive that she still had time to bake them even with being injured and having to be at the station in the morning.

"So, last week we worked on breakfast, so now we're on lunch, which is the day's refueling station. Having a healthy, timely lunch can help curb an afternoon sluggishness or distraction, if you do it properly. So it needs to be nutritional, but not heavy. Today, we're going to work on a few options, that you can take with you and maybe have today! Or share with someone. Because that healthy eating is something that can be shared is just yet another benefit of it.

"Bento boxes are a very neat little lunch trip, especially if you make them yourself, so here's some sheets on how to make some health-focused ones and some containers to make a few today if you'd like. Bento is perfect for sharing, too.

"If you're more of a sandwich person, I've also got this Tijuana torta recipe to check out. It's black beans and guacamole, so you can give it a kick and some calcium with a little melted Montery cheese. Or maybe try a crab stuffed pita or barbeque chicken sandwich. Those last two are a bit up on the sodium for my tastes, but it's still a lot better than what you'd get if you went to most lunch meat selections. Deli meats as a secret healthy eating killer; they're loaded with preservatives and sodium, and so I highly recommend baking just a plain chicken breast and cutting it up to use on sandwiches than deli turkey or ham.

"Vegetables and the like are important for lunch, and there's a lot of really floofy vegetable salads with lemon or dill out there, but, for lunch, really, just some vegetables with maybe a nice light dip is best, which is really quick and easy to make.

"And, of course, a little desert snack. Chocolate's a big hit with you guys, and so today we'll try something with carob instead, which is a healthy chocolate substitute, used in just about everything imaginable by vegetarians. Those muffins are made with carob, actually. And you can make little candies or bites to treat yourself at the end of your healthy lunch.

"Loads of options, guys. If there aren't any questions, let's get started?"

Class today met down at the pond, as Ghanima felt like feeding the flamingos.

"Today, children, we discuss semantics," Ghanima said briskly from her seat on the grass.  "Although the words are used interchangeably in many cases, fate and destiny can be, and should be, distinguished."  She smiled, kicking her heels slightly.  "Don't groan at me.  Semantics are your friends, I promise.  When you know a word, inside and out, it becomes more than a word.  It's a friend, a weapon, and a great source of fun at the expense of other people."

"So, let's chat.  Semantics and harbingers of fate.  I'm curious to hear what you think."

"Today," Brennan said, as she passed out posterboard and markers to the students, "we're talking about gender roles, identity and stereotypes. Those are really big subjects; I can't do much more than glance at the stereotypes here in class today. If you're interested and want to keep reading, I can recommend some books after class."

"Gender roles are the set of perceived behavioral norms associated particularly with males or females, in a given social group or system. It can be a form of division of labor by gender, as in classic hunter/gatherer societies in which men go out to hunt and women watch children and gather fruits and grains, or in a modern single-income family in which the woman stays at home and the man acts as a breadwinner. Almost all societies, to a certain effect, have a gender/sex system, although the components and workings of this system vary markedly from society to society." She went on to briefly review current research into the establishment and reinforcement of gender roles in society.

"Gender identity, meanwhile, is how a person defines him or herself in terms of gender. While this usually matches physical gender, some people identify as transgendered -- a male brain in a female body, or the reverse -- or as neither male nor female. Someone who believes their mental gender does not match their physical gender may be said to have gender identity disorder."

"The last thing we want to talk about, and the basis of your exercise today, is gender stereotypes. Stereotypes are simplistic generalizations about the roles of individuals in groups that help to feed into traditional gender roles. A simple gender stereotype is 'boys don't cry' or 'women can't drive.'"

"What I would like for you to do today is, working in pairs, come up with lists of male and female stereotypes and what reinforces them. For example, if your stereotype is that women are bad drivers, you might write down that popular jokes give that message. At the end of class we'll probably handwavily compare the lists and see where they differ and where they overlap. I'm around if you have questions."
