Lily had J,GOB for the class today. It seemed like it was easier to cushion some of what she was talking about with baked goods.

"Last week you started racking up credit card debt. This week we're going to learn about what happens when you don't pay it off," she said. because the flist doesn't need this first thing in the morning )

Once again, the photography class was meeting in the journalism room.

"Okay, gang. Last week's assignment was to take photos of things that conveyed sadness. I'm definitely curious to see what you've all come up with. We're going to hit the dark room and develop your photos first. After that, we'll discuss each other's pictures and talk about photo composition and more advanced developing techniques."

Veronica made sure everyone had safety gear on when they entered the dark room.

After they finished developing their photos, she asked them each to choose their best and display it for the rest of the class. "Let's talk about these. Which photo do you think captured sadness the best? Are there any photos that you don't feel captured sadness at all?"

After the discussion, she said, "Next week's assignment is to take photos that convey anger."

Class met in the Danger Shop today, and there was an array of logs stripped of their bark, gunpowder, and woodworking equipment set up at one end, with blast shields lined up near the middle of the room. Tyler glanced up from his notes as the class assembled.

"Morning," he said. "This is a things-that-go-boom week. There's an old Hungarian legend that a city called Paks defended itself during a siege by chopping down a cherry tree and making a cannon overnight. The cannon worked until it blew up and took the town with it. Now, I'm not a carpenter, but I see a couple problems with that story." A beat. "Which is why we're retesting it."

"You should just have time to make and test a cannon in class if you work in small groups; the wood and woodworking tools are over there. I'm handing out a sheet of specific directions, but basically you want to drill a hole through the log, add a metal tube with gunpowder in it and a fuse, load a cannonball, light the rope, stand back behind the blast shields, and -- in theory -- boom." He spread his fingers to demonstrate the "boom."

"Please wear safety gear, please don't be stupid. This is Danger Shop so you can't get hurt, but that doesn't make it playtime."

"Questions?"

"Today," Anakin begin, pointing his hand toward the simulator, "we work with the F-16 Flying Falcon, one of the aircraft used by the militaries of this world. It's adequate in air-to-air combat as well as air-to-surface attack, can go more than 850 kilometers before it needs to be refueled and can withstand up to nine G's--pretty high tech for this world's standards."

He opened the simulator door and gestured to the controls. "As you can see, it's configured differently than the systems we've been using in the last few weeks, but the joystick and the trigger button are fairly self-explanatory. You'll also be dealing with the Earth's gravity, so if you make the plane go up too quickly, the machine's been equipped to simulate G forces, so you'll pass out or throw up. If you throw up, you and Jess will be cleaning that up," he added.

He clapped his hands together. "Begin!"

"The 1920s saw the rise of a few big seperate film industries," Mitchell said. He was perched on the back of his couch again, his feet on the cushions. "We'll get to the United States next week. This week, we're talking about Germany, about the Soviet Union, and how they coped after the Great War." There was almost a moment's hesitation there, on that note. "For those of you not of this time, the Great War was... epic and brutal and dragged on from 1914 till 1918, destroying lives, destroying borders, ending nationalism on piles upon piles of men who thought they were going to be heroes for their people."More teal deer gather... )

Anemone was around. Ish. Somewhere back in the stacks came the sound of singing and the occasional crashing noise as she did battle with the mis-shelved collections and the army of sentient (in her view) dust bunnies that tended to accumulate around the lesser-used books.

There would be no uprising on her watch, thank you.

[Still catching up on nine days of away-ness, plz to be modding your library needs.]
