Flight and Flying [Tuesday, July 21, 4th period]

"Today," Anakin begin, pointing his hand toward the simulator, "we work with the F-16 Flying Falcon, one of the aircraft used by the militaries of this world. It's adequate in air-to-air combat as well as air-to-surface attack, can go more than 850 kilometers before it needs to be refueled and can withstand up to nine G's--pretty high tech for this world's standards."

He opened the simulator door and gestured to the controls. "As you can see, it's configured differently than the systems we've been using in the last few weeks, but the joystick and the trigger button are fairly self-explanatory. You'll also be dealing with the Earth's gravity, so if you make the plane go up too quickly, the machine's been equipped to simulate G forces, so you'll pass out or throw up. If you throw up, you and Jess will be cleaning that up," he added.

He clapped his hands together. "Begin!"

Danny had flown through objects and into space without a plane. A fighter jet wasn't going to make him ill, or pass out. So he ignored took Master Skywalker's warnings with a grain of salt and took the plane up faster than recommended.

Not puking, no sir. Not Danny. Not at all... Except then he was.

He threw open the door to the simulator. "TRASH CAN!" he managed to holler, but he couldn't reach it in time. A very sheepish expression on his face, he turned to look at Master Skywalker.

"...sorry."

Momoko jumped into the simulator eagerly. She'd had the chance to fly a simulated F-35 once and simply assumed that an earlier version would be a breeze.

Well, some things were the same, but, hmm. She'd start in a minute after she found the ignition switches.

Exercise 1: Air to Surface

You are looking for five targets located in a mountain range. They vary in size from a several story-tall building to a small car. The average pilot can make it through the run in about 12 minutes. A beginner'll take up to 20 minutes and still be in the generally acceptable range.

Anakin scorched through it in 5 minutes flat.

Yes, that time is insane.

Once she had a handle on the console, Momoko was eager to try her hand at the exercise! She managed to take out the building and a few of the larger targets rather quickly, but she had some difficulty locking onto a few of the smaller ones.

Exercise 2: Air to Air

Classic dogfighting. You are up against three airplanes that are heavier and less maneuverable than you are, but they have longer-range weapons.

Try not to die.

"If you're willing to let me, I'd like to pass on the dogfighting," Ender said, being sure not to sound too disrespectful beyond avoiding Anakin's favorite prefix. "Battlefield tactics and I are no longer on speaking terms. I'd like to keep to civilian flight."
