The last few weeks of Flight Club had been a little shaky and, for that, Gavin was going to do his best to try and make this one a little better. After all, his gremlin bite had mostly been forgotten due to the kids arrival. He could show his face without wanting to die.

"Welcome back," he greeted, nodding. "I hope everyone survived the weekend okay. My kid was kickass but a really bad troublemaker. Gets that from his other father."

He'd just leave his name out. John knew who he was.

"Anyway, today, we're going to be sticking with the kid theme," Gavin said because he wanted amusement. "We're all going to be driving landspeeders...and you're going to have four kids with you. Four crying, screaming, messy, restless kids in the back. Your job will be to drive the landspeeder while making sure the kids don't fall out, don't hurt each other and don't hurt you. You may laugh but children are a HUGE distraction and if you can deal with them, you'll be able to deal with just about any distraction thrown at you when you're flying. You can't throw the kids out of the speeder, either."

Not looking anyone specific, nope.

"Have fun."

Sam was still catching up on the sleep he'd missed over the weekend, and nearly overslept to the point of being late to the library.

He still managed to find the time to grab coffee though. Priorities were important!

"There's one more aspect of leadership that isn't all fun and games," Nathan said after the class filed in. "That is sacrifice. Personal sacrifice. You already know that you won't be able to make everyone happy. However it's not going to be possible to make yourself happy all of the time either.

"What's the most important thing to you?" Nathan asked, looking them all over. "Family? Stability? As a leader it may be your job to give those very things up. You have to ask yourself if you can give those things up. Could you leave your home to be with your troops as they go to war? Could you cut off contact with your family if it meant keeping them safe?

"There's no one answer," Nathan said. "I know what I would do. You have to determine what you would do. For today's exercise I want you to write down five things that are the most important to you. Then write down what would make you give up those things if you had to. Then ask yourself if you could give up those things.

"You can keep the paper or destroy it after class is done," Nathan assured them. "The information is for your eyes only, though you're welcome to talk with your classmates if you want."

Today, when the students entered the Danger Shop, they were met with a rather uninteresting-looking obstacle course.

Don't worry, guys. Hammer was prepared to make it weird.

"First of all, class!" Hammer boomed. "Anyone who mentions next week is getting detention. Secondly! It is vital that you are in excellent shape, so as to rescue everyone who may need rescuing! So today, to prepare for your final next week, we're going to run this obstacle course!"

He smiled, then produced a box, not opening it yet. "Everyone is expected to run the course, but it's not that easy. Sometimes you will have things, such as your costume, sidekicks, or those you are rescuing, holding you down. So everyone's gonna put on one of these babies."

He smiled at them as he doled out the blue non-blankets. "Don't worry about hurting yourselves! The simulation won't let you. I think."

[I swear next week I'll actually be around for class. Goddamn RL school.]

"Adaptation," Mohinder began. "Starting from an enviroment similar to this the human body has certain expectations of the outside world - heat, light, pressure, gravity enough not crack your bones, air whose content won't scorch the lungs or leave it asphyxiating before it dehydrates."

"But that's only on this world - and others like it," he said passing out sets of notes. "And from such a relatively limited sample it would seem presumptous to think the same would happen elsewhere"

Mohinder turned to sketch out an equation on the board at the front of class, talking fractions of stars with planets, the likelihood of life developing, of intelligence etc, before throwing down the chalk. "Ultimately, this is all just guesswork and - out of Fandom's influence - we can't reason out if intelligent alien life exists without some kind of evidence."

"And if it did would we recognise it?" Mohinder settled back behind his desk. "How would life evolve on a very different planet? Or if you know it has - then how did it?"

Claudia was in a fantastic mood as she opened the library today. The Art Crawl yesterday had been a huge success! She plucked at her copper, burnt orange, red-orange and burnt sienna plaid mini skirt (over teal leggings, of course), then adjusted the hang of her chartreuse shirt and pepto-pink jacket before touching her black beret to make sure it was correctly perched on top of her hair. On anyone else, it would look like an escape attempt of the unpopular crayons had been caught and turned into fabric. On Claudia it looked great.

But even she might be pushing it with the macaroni and cheese necklace.

She sat down at the desk and pulled out her sketchpad and began drawing her latest still life: this time about Reese's Cups.

Mmm.
