The computer lab had the same set-up as usual, except for one computer that was a bit further away from the others. Mike was standing by that one as he launched into his lecture. "Last week, we learned about the World Wide Web and using web portals for searching. But before you can start searching, you need to get on the Internet first."

Mike gave a brief overview of TCP/IP networking protocol in case anyone really wanted to know how it all worked, but he managed to stop himself before people started dozing off. "So, very simply, if we're setting up a computer for Internet use, you'll have a few more steps from what we covered in the first couple of classes. At the very least, you'll need a telephone cord to connect the internal modem to a phone jack for a dial-up connection. However, I strongly recommend you stay away from dial-up and go with a much faster broadband or DSL connection. For that, you'll need one of these modems," he said, holding up one of the broadband modems. He demonstrated how to connect the lone computer to the modem before continuing.

"Now, in the computer lab itself, we have a good example of a small network. Over here, we have three computers connected to a router. So, if I'm one the first computer, right here, and I need a file that's saved on the last computer at the end, I just have to look at the other computers on this network and retrieve it." Mike looked at the class, hoping that someone was comprehending the lecture but feeling doubtful. "Or, we can just connect the router to the modem and jump back into searching the Internet."

Onion Knight stood at the front of the class, on Lulu's desk. He waved at the class as they came in and pointed his wee little sword at the board, where Lulu had written a note:

Today,, it began, you have the recipes from the second class at your individual stations. Get into groups of three at each station, and then Liir will provide variations on each recipe. Look to him for guidance in this case. (Yes, Liir, this means that you don't need to join a group this week; help out others as they need it.)

Follow Liir's variations, or vary them again yourselves; still, the basis for each recipe must remain what you learned in the second class. That means no frying bacon in a frying pan.

Although I do recommend frying the bread in the syrup-bacon grease mixture from the baking sheet, once the bacon is finished.

Again, listen to Liir; he'll provide what guidance you need for this class. I'll return for the last ten minutes of class to supervise clean-up, and to see what you have all accomplished.

Once he'd indicated the note, Onion Knight flopped himself onto the side of the desk, swinging his legs merrily over the edge.

Aly was looking thoughtful as she studied her students.  "We're more than halfway through this term," she said, once everyone was seated and quiet.  "And we haven't had a midterm because - well, exams are incredibly stupid.  So what I'd like for today is for everyone to tell me one thing they've learned related to spying this term - and it can be something that was taught specifically in this class, something you learned from a classmate or just an observation you've made over the year."

She pointed to a student at what seemed like random.  "You first."

Once everyone had gone, she continued.  "Now tell me one thing you were hoping to learn but haven't yet."

After everyone had answered, Aly grinned.  "We'll see what we can do about those hopes in the remaining classes.  For now, have a good week, and stay alert."

[OOC:  Please wait for the OCD is up.  Apologies for the late/lame class.  I had an interview this morning and it went longer than I expected and I was all nervy beforehand.  Because I'm a big dork.]

On the walls today were several blown up pictures of Gnosis. Juli was mildly irritated with the pictures, they weren’t the quality she was used to working with, but really it was the best she’d been able to do.

Getting her computer which, like her, had come from the far future, to work at all with a printer from the current period of time had been a battle and a half. It would do. She eyed her class, counting heads, and waiting for as many of them to be seated as were showing up today. At least, and here she was mildly amused, there were no sparkle-balls in her class this week.

“We’ll be talking about monsters today,” Juli said, “the pictures on the walls are monsters from my home universe. We called them Gnosis. Their chemical composition is that of mere table salt and water—and their touch is enough to turn a human to salt. In very rare cases though, for whatever reason, a human who is touched by a Gnosis is turned not to salt but into a Gnosis themselves. They are not natural. They were drawn into my home universe by a madman.” Joachim Mizrahi.

Her husband. Juli’s eyes narrowed slightly but that was all the reaction that showed.

She clasped her hands together in front of her. “We have discussed genetic mutation before, but in this case I am not interested in those mutations that have been used for good. Monsters, by very definition, are destructive.”

“What monsters are there in your worlds? Why would you consider them to be monsters? What, in your experience, would you figure is the reason anyone would create monsters? These are your questions for today. Group up, however you will, and go over them, please.”

When class began Nathan was there with his usual handouts. He noted which of his students was missing and was not happy about it.

"First Amendment today," Nathan said. "Freedom of Religion, to be precise. Here we have separation of church and state. Some countries don't and say it's no big deal. You know the drill: pair up, pick a side, argue it."
