Lawyering Up: Class 9, Wed, Period 2

When class began Nathan was there with his usual handouts. He noted which of his students was missing and was not happy about it.

"First Amendment today," Nathan said. "Freedom of Religion, to be precise. Here we have separation of church and state. Some countries don't and say it's no big deal. You know the drill: pair up, pick a side, argue it."

Listen, talk amongst yourselves, the usual.

Meg didn't take notes but she did listen to the lecture as best she could. She couldn't help but notice it was emptier than usual in here.

Chris frowned when he realized Lana wasn't in class.

Lana wasn't at practice yesterday, and she wasn't here today... Annette was more than a little concerned.

And where was Turtle? Turtle missing class seemed unnatural.

Lee looked around, frowned at the empty classroom and got a little worried.

Debate!

Z looked around for someone to debate with.

"Hey," Ronan said, smiling softly. "Want to work together?" he asked.

Yes, because Z was going to turn the hot guy down for anything. "Sure," she said. "Who's what?"

"I'll take..." He considered for a moment. "The pro side? Pro separation, I mean. Does that work for you?"

"So that makes me anti-separation, which is kind of funny considering I haven't been to confession in about two years," Z said. "Still, I think I can work it."

"Well, clearly," Ronan said, launching right into his argument, "that just goes to show exactly why church and state should be separate. When a religion is part and parcel of the government, it excludes members of other religions from having an equal say in the workings of that government -- or those people who are part of the state, yet follow no religion at all."

Way to give the girl warning there, Ronan.

Z recovered quickly, which possibly came of having a brain that could handle multiple inputs at once. "I don't see how what I said supports your argument at all. Clearly the state needs something to inform its moral values, or it'll all go straight to hell."

"But what gives the values of one religion any more importance than the other religions followed by a state's populace?" Ronan asked. "Nothing. There is no 'one true way', and so there is no one absolute set of moral values that should be imposed on a given state. That is not to say that I am advocating a moral-less state; on the contrary, I believe that all religions should have the right to share there views, and at the very least share a common moral ground between them that would form the basis of the moral hand of the law. Beyond that I believe that individual religions should see to themselves." He grinned. "In fact," he added, "by working together to see what they have in common, many of these religions may start to see that they're not all that different, after all."

Chris looked for a debate partner.

Isabel wandered over after class. "Hey Sam. I just wanted to say thanks for last week. And sorry you had to deal with my weirdness."

"Isabel, hey," Sam said, smiling softly. "Don't be sorry, at all. How are you doing?"

"I've had better weeks," she shrugged. "But I'll be okay. It could have been much worse, so I'm not complaining."

"I'd probably still be complaining if I was in your place," Sam replied. "I'm glad you're okay. I'm sorry about what happened."

"It wouldn't accomplish much and I'd rather just move on." One of Isabel's favorite sports was river rafting apparently. "I'm glad too. Trust me. And don't be sorry. What you did, what Peter did. It helped everyone keep from going completely over the edge."

"Wyatt seemed pretty close to the edge anyway. I think he was as worried as the rest of us combined," Sam said.

Isabel was still a little worried about that, but that was something she'd deal with with Wyatt. "You'd be the same way if it was Dawn. Just like Dawn or I would be freaked out if something happened to you guys."

"Yeah, I would. I'd know exactly how he feels," Sam agreed. "I'm just glad everyone's all right, you and Meg both."

"Tell me about it. Anyway, thanks again," she smiled. "I'm going to go head off in search of more coffee. I'll see you later."

Sam laughed. "Good luck. See you later."

Nathan's taking his time packing up, in case anyone wants to talk privately.

Not that Nathan gets terse when he's chewing over a problem or anything.

Lana will be absent due to being angeled and disappeared. Sorry. :)

Turtle be disappeared, too. Woe~
