Aly was flipping a lock in her hand as she waited for the class to arrive.  Not that they were doing anything with locks today.  It was just that she'd normally be flipping a knife to pass the time and, well, no knives on school property.

Once everyone was settled and the bell rang, Aly surveyed her students with a grin.

"So, last week we talked about picking locks, and quite of few of you are already quite good at that which definitely warms the cockles of my heart.  This week we're talking about what happens before you make it to the lock picking - and quite a few times after too," she said.  "This would be, of course, avoiding the ways people use to track those who might be breaking into their houses or things."

"Some of you have Criminal Justice, I'm sure, so you're very familiar with the idea of dusting for fingerprints.  Others of you have, you know, watched a police drama so it shouldn't be a surprise.  Fingerprints, stray hairs, motion detectors, dogs - all of these things can be used to catch a spy who's trying to stay far undercover."

Aly raised an eyebrow at the class.  "Okay, who has other techniques people use to protect their things and information.  We're not talking traps so much this time, just other ways to keep people - spies, thieves, you name it - from getting into their belongings.  Anyone come from a world where magic is used?  Special types of locks?  Air-tight vaults?"

Once the students had offered their answers, Aly nodded.  "Sounds good.  Now, if you would, pair up and figure out ways to beat some of these things.  Without alerting the whole neighbourhood that you're around.  So think silent, think sneaky, and think like you only have so long to complete your mission."  She grinned.  "Any questions?"

It was an unusually quiet Anemone that opened the library today, a worried Gulliver trailing behind her.

Instead of the computer lab, Mike had handwavily instructed the class to meet in a classroom where there was not a computer in sight. "First of all, I'd like to reassure you that if you're still feeling lost after last week's class, that's just fine. We covered a lot of material," said Mike. "If there's any part of it that you need me to go over again, let me know."

He grinned. "You'll be happy to know that I deviated a little bit from the syllabus this week," he said. "Today we'll be watching a movie called Athletic Shoes which actually shows computer usage. Feel free to take notes if you like, but as long as you stay awake during the movie, I'm happy with that."

[OCD coming up! Sorry that this is up later than usual, but someone wasn't up to sharing the laptop last night when I was ready to post this.]

"The business of the day is stew," Lulu began. "Most stews are thickened with flour, or occasionally corn starch; this recipe is one I prefer, in which the barley, and to a lesser extent the rice and lentils, thicken the stew on their own. Stews usually take much longer to make than would be available in a class period -- so, instead, thanks to some interesting functions I found here in the home ec lab la la handwavy Fandom magic la la, each cooking phase, which normally takes 25 minutes for this particular recipe, will instead take only 7. This should give you plenty of time to complete the stew during this class period."

Lulu went over the recipe, explaining what each of the different terms -- such as 'simmer' -- meant. "Also," she said, "you will be making biscuits to go along with the stew. Everything you need is available at your stations. Please, pair up -- again, with a new partner, someone you haven't yet worked with -- and go to your stations."

Juli was leaning against the front of her desk, hands crossed neatly over her stomach, while she waited for her class to assemble. When they had, she began to speak. “This week,” she said, “marks the first of several weeks that we’ll be talking about human modification—-the practise of enabling humans to go past the limits of their genetic code by altering it significantly.”

Just so we’re all… )

“Consider those questions as you discuss,” Juli said, “but also, simply use your own heads and think outside the box. There is no point in learning anything if you cannot think effectively with what you already know."

Another class, another set of packets.

"Today we'll be discussing Environmental Law," Nathan said. "We like having clean air to breathe, water to drink, and food that won't kill us. Environmental law is how we make that happen. And cut tags are how we have clean flists )
