Sneaky Spycraft - Week 4, Period 4

Aly was flipping a lock in her hand as she waited for the class to arrive.  Not that they were doing anything with locks today.  It was just that she'd normally be flipping a knife to pass the time and, well, no knives on school property.

Once everyone was settled and the bell rang, Aly surveyed her students with a grin.

"So, last week we talked about picking locks, and quite of few of you are already quite good at that which definitely warms the cockles of my heart.  This week we're talking about what happens before you make it to the lock picking - and quite a few times after too," she said.  "This would be, of course, avoiding the ways people use to track those who might be breaking into their houses or things."

"Some of you have Criminal Justice, I'm sure, so you're very familiar with the idea of dusting for fingerprints.  Others of you have, you know, watched a police drama so it shouldn't be a surprise.  Fingerprints, stray hairs, motion detectors, dogs - all of these things can be used to catch a spy who's trying to stay far undercover."

Aly raised an eyebrow at the class.  "Okay, who has other techniques people use to protect their things and information.  We're not talking traps so much this time, just other ways to keep people - spies, thieves, you name it - from getting into their belongings.  Anyone come from a world where magic is used?  Special types of locks?  Air-tight vaults?"

Once the students had offered their answers, Aly nodded.  "Sounds good.  Now, if you would, pair up and figure out ways to beat some of these things.  Without alerting the whole neighbourhood that you're around.  So think silent, think sneaky, and think like you only have so long to complete your mission."  She grinned.  "Any questions?"

Ino was mostly listening, still avoiding looking at Kabuto because though they'd talked and that had gone better than she'd hoped, she didn't need that stress during class.

She fiddled with her pen and sighed. Her list hadn't really gotten anywhere this morning.

Ino looked somewhat tentative, but said, "Some people back home can keep objects trapped inside scrolls where they'll stay unless you know how to summon them back. I guess that'd be a bit of a deterrent to a thief."

"Human guards count, right?" Triela asked hesitantly. "They're smarter than dogs, so they can be harder to sneak past."

"Magic's always a worry," Seregil said. "There's curses, shielding, illusions... It's always something you have to keep in mind. But you have to look out for more mundane things too. Little stuff that you have to be careful of or you're end up hurt if not caught. A lot of the richer houses in Rhiminee scatter broken shards of glass and pottery scattered over the top of the walls surrounding their property, for instance.

"And then there's always the physical traps. I've seen locks that have poison needles built into them that if you don't disarm them the right way, you're going to be in a lot of trouble."

"Where I'm from most of the stuff is protected by technology," Mel replied. "Heat sensors, laser trip wires, pressure sensitive floors, etc. Standard place doesn't use magic. For me? I usually try to find a good spot that no one would try to access on their own"

"There's companies who hire Craft users as guards," Dōjima said thoughtfully, "Some people will even hire Witches, usually if what's being guarded is illegal."

"Really important stuff is usually guarded by computer systems, DNA locks, that sort of thing. Why trust a Craft user with security, when there's always the risk of them turning Witch?"

Sokka raised his hand. "On my world, the innermost sanctuaries of our temples have locks that can only be opened by benders. Kinda sucks when you need to get in and can't."

"Magnetically-sealed safes," Anders offered with a slight shrug. "My world's kind of boring when it comes to this sort of thing."

"There are locks and doors in my world that can only be opened by a specific type of bending and sometimes require several people to be present for it to work," Zuko said.

"It depends on who they're trying to keep out," Luke said. "Most of them are pretty thief-proof, with droids and sensor and lasers, but they've forgotten to make them Jedi-proof. Most won't invest in metal that can keep a lightsaber out."

Coraline carefully considered the question before giving her answer. "Hiding things in plain sight can be very effective, or disguising one thing as another. If it's something that should be hidden and secret, whoever's looking for it will probably ignore those things out in the open." Protective colouration, she thought, but didn't say it out loud. "Or if you really want to keep something from being found, dropping it down a deep well works well."

Inara considered. "Laser and video technology, primarily, I think, but usually the art of camoflague--through non-magic means--and low technology solutions such as intricate knots that only I know how to tie and booby traps that only I know about are enough to keep me aware of when someone has gone through my things."
