captainliberty: (eyebrow)

Captain Liberty is looking better than last week, but she's still not braving the Danger Shop. "Good morning, class. Today we're going to talk about a little subject called finding your niche in the superheroing world. Which, okay, let's be honest. Most superheroes don't have one, and just fight whatever bad guy there is mediocrely and then they all kinda mix together in your head.

"So what makes you stand out? Some of you have powers you can use to help you there. Do you have a goal? Do you like fighting petty robberies more than villains? Do you have a nemesis you'd probably be known for tangling with? Or are you more likely to be seen on the cover of Star in some kind of skeezy love triangle with Lindsay Lohan? I've got a worksheet here to fill out, so work with your classmates if there's something you need to figure out, but turn this in at the end of class. I'm not grading on spelling or sentence structure, just how well you know how you want to use your skills. So... have at it." She's still not cool.

"Today we're talking about THE MAN. You know who I'm talking about. The fuzz, pigs, the fine members of the law enforcement establishment. And, on occasion, Tex. And let me tell you, that jail is absolutely no fun at all. Except for the parts where I frightened the troopers and sang theme songs to amuse myself. Those parts were loads of fun. Though I still think I should have somehow given myself a prison tattoo. You know, something classy like a big eagle on my chest. Though I think that might be a reference to America. Or Nazis. Neither of which I am really a fan of. Especially the Nazis because if you can hate anyone, it's the Nazis. The only people I'm sure I could kill and not get any funny looks about. Oh, if only I could be forced to travel through time in order to kill Hitler because they replaced my second heart with a bomb. If only I had a second heart for that matter..." Deadpool zoned out for a moment, thinking about second hearts and kicking people's head off.

"Where was I? Ah yes, coppers. Bobbies. They have several techniques to stop you from fleeing from the law. Shooting out tires, road blocks, using superheroes to punch your car to a stop. Those are all pretty straight forward methods so I will only be showing you a few other ways they work against your right to drive really really fast and endanger the public."

"The PIT maneuver," He said, passing out a sheet of paper. "Dastardly and dangerously done."

"What? I occasionally like alliteration." See Deadpool See Deadpool pout. Pout Deadpool, pout. "This is the PIT maneuver being done in action." Shutting off the lights, he slipped on a short film strip.

"And then there's the Spike Strip, whose name is pretty damn self explanatory I should hope. Dozens of sharp pointies meet tires. It doesn't end well. Trust me on this one."

"Now I want to see if you've learned anything after spending so many weeks with me. Can you kiddies think of ways to avoid these techniques and still outrun the MAN? Or Tex. Whichever."

The class had been handwavily notified to meet in the Danger Shop, and that was where they found Aly who was looking slightly gleeful as she made sure the final settings were correct.  Once everyone had come in, she turned to clasp her hands in front of her and greet the students.

"Good day, everyone.  Today we are talking, again, about explosions.  A few classes ago we talked about pipe bombs and molotov cocktails which are both nice bombs, but they're a bit sloppy.  They're street weapons more than tactical weapons, and they can't necessarily be directed towards strategic goals."  She grinned at Sam if she was present.  "As some of you noted then."

"This isn't to say that there isn't a place for that type of weapon.  In a revolution, you use any weapon you can get your hands upon.  But unless you're planning on simply erecting barricades in the streets and never moving beyond that - and that rarely works as an overall strategy - you're going to have to move to a more strategic outlook."

"We did this twice while fighting in the Copper Isles.  The first time," a shadow and then a look of triumph crossed Aly's face quickly, "we destroyed the Rajmuat slave docks.  It was a message to the King and to his Spymaster.  That they couldn't stop us and they couldn't continue to profit off the labour of slaves.  The second time, the capital's armory was blown up to distract the soldiers for a bit while we set up for the endgame.  I planned both attacks though, sadly, I had other responsibilities so couldn't plant the charges on the armory."  She smirked.  "That and I might possibly have been in trouble still for going on the slave harbor raid."

"What I've done today is separate you up into groups and given you a structure to decide how to destroy.  We're not focusing on the actuality of the explosives this time.  Let's assume that you have an co-conspirator who can handle the making of the bombs.  What I want you to do is decide where to place them and discuss the possible problems with destroying these bridges and forts and the possible issues that may arise while attacking them."

"If you have someone in your group who has the magic to deal with the situation, that's fine.  You can use that, but I'd like you also to look at the problem without magic."

"After you've made your plan, the Danger Shop has all these structures programmed in.  You can choose where to want to place your devices and see how big an explosion you can make."

"Questions?  Ideas?  Worries?"

Computer Science was in the Danger Room today like every other class, apparently, though as everyone walked in, the room looked like nothing more than a large arena.

"So, following last week with the war games, here's another way of simulating real world events. The Danger Room, as some of you know, is a resource the teachers of Fandom have access to in case they want to demonstrate something or have students participate in an activity that would be otherwise impossible in a classroom setting."

The brightly lit interior of the Danger Room disappeared suddenly, leaving the students standing in the alley way beside a small warehouse-like building in the middle of a city.

"I mocked up a simulation for you guys, but it's not as in depth as this kind of technology can achieve when expertly plotted and programmed," he said, leading them up the ramp to the inside of the building. People walked around, leading bicycles or watching tv in the loft area, ignoring the students for the moment while Logan continued. "If you put enough effort in, this can be absolutely seamless and difficult to tell from the real thing. As it is, there are a few glitches that can show you that, at the end, they're not actually there."

He gestured at one guy with a bicycle, who headed down the ramp with his bike and disappeared around the corner -- a moment later, the guy walked in the back door of the room, collected his bike, and walked down the ramp again.

"Go ahead and talk to some of the people around here and see how limited they are in conversation," he said. "End of the class, I expect you to be able to tell me about at least one of these people, at least enough to give their name and what city this is supposed to be in."

[OOC: Note to self? No more posting at work. It no likey.

Today, the DangerRoom was set up as a smaller version of a posh, 1930s movie palace-style theatre, with rich trims of burgundy and gold. Honor stood at the front of the auditorium, clad in her civilian clothes for the first time in a while. Nimitz sat at her feet, and her arm rested against her chest as one might cradle an injured limb. She gave a taut smile as the bell rang.

"My apologies, ladies and gentlemen, for making you pay for my shortcomings. Rather than the actual exercise I had planned for today, we're going to revert to the old standby -- a film." Her smile slipped lopsided, her voice taking on a wry tone. "Today's feature will be The Final Warrior, a samurai movie focusing on the shift from feudal to 'modern' Japan.

"For next week, I would like you to write an analysis of the tactics you see the Army captain use against the Japanese military. After summarizing his actions, I'd like you to state what you would have done. This should take you at least five pages, and I will collect it at the beginning of class next week."

The taut smile returned as she made her way off the stage and headed into the shadows. Off to stage right, as the lights faded and the movie screen came to life, the unmistakable blue glow of her minicomp might be seen by the occasional, observant student.

"Hi girls," Summer greeted as everyone arrived. "First of all, I want to thank everyone for making the slumber party a success on Saturday. It was a lot of fun. If anyone has ideas for another social activity, let me know. Also, spring will be here before we know it, so we should probably discuss our service project."

"And have some pizza if you want," she continued, pointing at a nearby table.

There were boxes in the classroom. One with different kinds of wood, one with different kinds of fabric, and one with various things. There were also small saws, glue, scissors, paper and string spread out on the tables.

"Good morning students. Today we are going to be working on creating miniatures." Emma gestured towards the boxes. "You'll use the materials provided to make a bed, a closet, a couch and a table. If you still have time after that, you're welcome to make whatever else you want."

She sat down behind her desk and opened a copy of Ankh-Morpork Times she'd found lying around somewhere. It was a fascinating read.

There was a sign on the usual classroom door directing everyone to the computer lab again today. Which, thankfully, meant that Turtle could avoid trying to choke down coffee this time.

"Advertising!" she announced when everyone was there. "We're gonna have to do it if we wanna get anywhere. So, I was thinking, today, we could just kind of have some fun on the computers and make up preemptive ads for our Gremlin Glitter. Have at it. No looking at porn. Until I at least see three possible flyers, an idea for a radio spot, and a display model. Go!"

This week the Danger Shop was set up with a marshlands theme.

As everyone arrived, Luna explained that she thought perhaps they could use a different sort of practice this week. "For magic users, there are a variety of interesting encounters to be had. Some encounters call on the same skills one would employee in a one on one confrontation with another magic user. This week, I have selected a few magical creatures against whom we may each try our luck."

As such, there were creatures in the marsh to challenge every level of skill represented by the club members, ranging from Grindylows, Hinkypunks, and Plimpies to Mackled Malaclaws, Lobalugs, and Kappas.

There were hand outs available by the door on each creature and on known methods of their defeat.

[ooc: If a creature begins to get the better of someone, if you so wish, the program will stop. If you'd rather have a hand from another in the club, go for it. Since it's the danger shop, no one will actually get hurt. If I disappear, it's cause there's a storm outside! OCD on the way up!]

Wednesday, April 4, Period One

As announced in last week's class, the students assembled in the Danger Shop, which was set up to look like a cross between an engineering lab and a gun range.

"Today we'll be taking a look at three types of specialty firearms, and you'll all have the opportunity to try your hand at using them. But before the rest of you approach the firing range, I'll ask Santos and Blank to demonstrate the three weapons you'll be trying out. And don't worry, we won't be using any live ammunition and all the safety protocols are in place for the classroom. There's no danger of any injuries."
