Monday, October 16, First Period

In addition to the usual comfy chairs and breakfast spread, there are several stacks of books scattered about the room.

"Good morning. Today we're going to do something a little different. I know that lately, you've had to deal with some rather difficult topics in this class. Prophecy isn't an easy subject, and that's especially true for those of you who've already had first-hand experience with it. So today, I want you to take some time to decompress. Work with your project group if you like, catch up on some reading-" He nodded toward the books. "Or just talk quietly with your friends. I'll be here all period for anything that you'd like to discuss with me, any questions you might have about the class, or anything else. There are handouts for you that cover the class topics for today. Those of you enrolled in the lab will find some of this material familiar, but there's more in-depth information here for you.

Also, I'll need to speak with Miss Belacqua, Miss Brown, and Miss Nitt before the end of class today."
Psst, this way )

Absences:
Lyra Belacqua: one class, one lab excused
Lavendar Brown: one class excused
Agnes Nitt: one lab

[ooc: Apologies for wimping out on today's class. I promise there'll be twice as much effort put into next week's. And yes, we're a little off the syllabus. I'll be updating it soon. Please wait for OCD threads are up.]

When it was time to open the library, Yomiko came out of her office, yawning, and turned on the main lights and opened the door. No, she totally hadn't been holed up in the library reading the books all weekend. Just most of the weekend.

The projector was still set up when the students entered the room.

"Good afternoon," Lorelai said after everyone had entered and was seated. "Today we're going to learn about a very popular genre of hour long television dramas, the police procedurals, legal dramas and other police and crime shows that are prevelant in the prime time lineup in recent years."

After a lecture on how those shows work and the history behind them, Lorelai turned off the lights and started the projector to show clips from some of the more popular shows.

"First up is Crime and Justice: SUV," she said. After that clip, she moved on to CFD amd Without a Trace.

She turned the lights back on after all the clips. "Any questions or comments?"

[ooc: notes on the clips - 1. The L&O (or C&J) clip deals with a sex club and thus, may not be considered work safe. 2. I couldn't find a meta name for Without A Trace on the Wiki. 3. Same as last week, the clips are the meta shows, not the actual shows. 4. These clips are a little on the longer side. You don't have to watch if you don't have time/interest.]

As the students entered the classroom, they might notice El with his head on the desk, possibly sleeping. If they tried to leave early, they would learn the hard way that he wasn't.

He had a bandage around one of his arms.

Next to El's theoretically sleeping head, there was a small sign. It read:

"Quietly practice vocabulary amongst yourselves. Will be quiz on it next week. Don't try to leave, I will know."

There was a stack of vocabulary sheets next to El's sign.

"Hello class. I trust you found the information on Crows and their language informative.

Today is a review day, so you will be getting into groups of two and conversing in Starling and Snake as we did with Dogs and Dolphins. However, we will begin with the extra credit presentations in the language of Crows.

Professor Roslin was seated on the front edge of her desk, glasses
perched on her nose, as the students entered. Her attention was
focused on the piece of octagonal paper in her hand, folded in thirds,
and written by hand. The lights at the front of the room had been
dimmed, leaving the ones in the back on, so was displayed.

After a few moments, she looked up, readjusting her glasses. The paper
was folded as she stood, and stuffed into an envelope. Anyone sitting
toward the front of the room could probably see that it was addressed
to her, and the return was marked simply "W. Adama," with no
accompanying address.

"Good afternoon, everyone," Laura began, "I hope you all had a good
and very restful weekend because today, we're delving into the
Twentieth Century International System as it existed here, on Earth.
Well, in Europe, specifically. I'll try not to put you to sleep, so
long as you try to stay awake." A wry grin touched the corners of her
lips.

Picking up the SmartBoard remote, she directed attention to the screen. )

[Sorry this is a few minutes late. I've had gasp real
work to do. Not that it's exciting. Which is why I got this done at
all. Anyway, if the first person to respond to the sign-in and to the
discussion questions could set up each thread, I would appreciate it.
I'm still trying to find a way around the webfilters here at work.
Which is irritating because, honestly, I wasn't supposed to be here
this long... ::sigh:: But I digress. I'll pick up after class and OOC
threads afterward. Thanks!

Oh, and I used Force and Statecraft: Diplomatic Problems of Our
Time
by Gordon Craig and Alexander George for some of the notes
for the lecture.]

Seeming much more fit and healthy perhaps because of an exciting adventure into the Z-Cases? just maybe, Logan was at his desk when everyone came into the room, smiling at the class when everyone had sat down. Each desk had a laptop computer again and the coffee machien continued to burble in the back of the room.

"Good morning! So last week I'd asked for your project proposals - and thank you D'anna and Jake for your rousing performance in mime. I hope the rest of you all can at least get a word to me on what you have planned even very handwavily by the end of today. The projects are due on the 23rd -- and yeah, that's next week."

Logan tapped out a URL that displayed on the large screen behind him. "So, today we're looking at News Stories of the Century. I know not all of us are from around here exactly, but I think the headlines speak for themselves in terms of their importance.

"I'd like you to take a look at the results of their poll, in which the public were asked to rank these pages by importance in their opinion. Your assignment is to pick your top five headlines and tell me why, even just briefly. If you agree with the public or the journalists' picks, then just tell me why as well.

"After that, you're free to work on your projects," Logan said, motioning to a side table where he had laid out supplies for posters and other things and sign ups for equipment of different types all very handwavey, of course. "Or browse the website a bit, if you prefer. I particularly recommend the section on women photographers or the trivia game."

"Sorry about last week," Bel said as people arrived. "I was a little preoccupied. Unless anyone has anything to bring up, I have a feeling that Blair is going to want us to watch the latest Spooky Things episode as proof that vampires are people, too."

There are cookies, of course.

[ooc: sorry so lame, long day and I'm exhausted.]
