[Media Studies & Communication: Week 7, 4th Period]

Seeming much more fit and healthy perhaps because of an exciting adventure into the Z-Cases? just maybe, Logan was at his desk when everyone came into the room, smiling at the class when everyone had sat down. Each desk had a laptop computer again and the coffee machien continued to burble in the back of the room.

"Good morning! So last week I'd asked for your project proposals - and thank you D'anna and Jake for your rousing performance in mime. I hope the rest of you all can at least get a word to me on what you have planned even very handwavily by the end of today. The projects are due on the 23rd -- and yeah, that's next week."

Logan tapped out a URL that displayed on the large screen behind him. "So, today we're looking at News Stories of the Century. I know not all of us are from around here exactly, but I think the headlines speak for themselves in terms of their importance.

"I'd like you to take a look at the results of their poll, in which the public were asked to rank these pages by importance in their opinion. Your assignment is to pick your top five headlines and tell me why, even just briefly. If you agree with the public or the journalists' picks, then just tell me why as well.

"After that, you're free to work on your projects," Logan said, motioning to a side table where he had laid out supplies for posters and other things and sign ups for equipment of different types all very handwavey, of course. "Or browse the website a bit, if you prefer. I particularly recommend the section on women photographers or the trivia game."

Jake pondered deeply before finally choosing his five.

"86 70 5. Berlin Wall goes up 1961
55 22 4. Hitler named chancellor 1933
51 45 3. Israel achieves statehood 1948
5 6 2. JFK assassinated in Dallas 1963
8 10 1. U.S. stock market crashes 1929

And all of them because of the change in the political map of the world, really."

Sam had a very, very hard time choosing.

5. Scopes: evolution vs creation, 1925.
4. King delivers 'Dream' speech, 1963.
3. Gandhi starts nonviolent reform, 1920.
2. Wrights fly first airplane, 1903.
1. Einstein conceives relativity, 1905.

They all signify a change in the way human beings look at the world, and how we relate to other people. They also provide a leaping off point for other human events, and for what we believe is possible--they show that dreams can be achieved, no matter what the dream is.

5. Pathfinder sends Mars photos 1997 - Whomever this Pathfinder person is, it's always good to know what the rest of your worlds look like.
4. First jet plane takes off 1939 - ...you are so behind it's a wonder you've survived. First step in the right direction...
3. Gagarin first man in space 1961 - So many students who are from here have a keen interest in space, and this explains the novelty to me.
2. First 'test-tube baby' born 1978
2. Birth control pill OK'd by FDA 1960 - Reproductive health is always important.
1. First computer chip patented 1959
1.U.S. women win the right to vote 1920 - I'm shocked that this is so recent an accomplishment here.

Ray ranked his top five assignments and managed to bang out reasons why.

Peter came up with his list. It was put together very thoughtfully.

1. The fall of the Berlin Wall
2. The atomic bomb
3. The moon landing
4. The US stock market crash
5. Women's suffrage in the US

They all had significant global impact. Our world is still changed by these things that happened up to almost a century ago.

Hamlet headed over to talk to Logan while the other students started working on their projects.

"Professor Cale?"

Hamlet smiled back at bit at his teacher. "There seems to be an odd number of students in this class, and I appear to be the one out. Is there a way for me to do a solo project, or is there a group that would allow me to join them?"

"If you wouldn't mind," he answered. "I would enjoy being a part of a group, but if all the pre-formed groups already have ideas of their own, I can do something by myself."
