A bit sleepy after her late night phone call, Isabel wandered in with an extra large mocha in hand to start the day.

Leaning against the desk at the front of the room, Aly waited for the students to file in as the hour began.

"Good morning. I hope you all had a good, if colorless, weekend. Apparently one of our TAs," she grinned at Bridge, "is royalty now so be sure to bother him accordingly."

How to win friends and pick up people )

[OOC: Guidelines taken with gratitude from Handbook of Practical Spying. I'll be around all day, and please do wait for the OCD to come up - it'll probably be about 20 minutes as I have to run to work first. OCD is up!]

The students have gotten an e-mail telling them to meet in the Danger Shop today -- and to dress for warm weather; when they gather, the doors open on a tropical rain forest scene, with trees rising high above their heads, frogs leaping from leaf to leaf, and the occasional black-and-white streak of a badger rushing through the undergrowth. Elliot's tied her hair back into a ponytail, and she's dressed casually, in a T-shirt and khaki slacks.

"Hi, guys. Today we're talking about evolution and natural selection, and I thought that to show it off, we'd take a little fake trip to one of the most genetically diverse environments in the world -- the Amazon Rainforest.

"I want you to have most of the class to explore, so I'm going to keep my lecture short. The natural selection chapter in your textbook has a lot more information and you should probably read it before the midterm. But basically, natural selection is the way that animals or plants that are well-adapted to their environment get to live to the next generation and pass on their traits."

She reached down and scooped up two frogs, one red and one greenish-yellow, only wincing a little as she did so. "For example, these frogs are very differently colored, because they fill different niches. But if they were suddenly in an environment that was all red or all green, one would be able to camouflage itself and the other would probably be someone's dinner -- not mine, ew -- pretty fast. And the one that isn't dinner gets to have more tadpoles and pass on its genes."

Elliot released the frogs and wiped her hands on her pants. "What I want you to do today is to go into the rainforest -- alone or with a partner -- to observe and pick an animal or plant that's adapted to this environment, and write down 100 words about why the being might survive in the rainforest. Look at everything about the being, from structure to size to diet to coloration. And don't worry about getting lost; I'll hit the button to make the whole rainforest go away at the end of class."

She leaned against a tree trunk and waited for the students to disperse into the rainforest.

There were more bits of fruit and cheese and fresh apple cider for today’s class as well as some tea. Wilson sat behind the desk, sipping on cider and going over his notes as he waited for the class to file in and settle down.

“Good afternoon. All right for today’s class we’re going to have a review of the past five classes in anticipation of your first test which will be administered next Tuesday the 17th. Please, remember that tests are worth 15% of your final grade and 0s do not look good just before Parents Weekend.”

Giving them all a knowing grin, Wilson launched into a fairly substantial review of the classes from the prior weeks. Working from week one forward, he carefully mapped out questions from week two, week three, week four and finally week five.

After the review, Wilson hopped up on the desk and gave the class a quick smile.

“All right, some house keeping duties. First off, I am thrilled to announce that three of your fellow classmates will be giving us a little show at the school assembly being held on the 27th of this month. Please plan to attend and point and laugh cheer them on.”

Grin!

“Secondly, the field trip to Las Vegas, November 10th through the 12th, please let me know if you have a conflict with those dates so that a secondary project can be assigned.”

Reaching he took a sip of cider and then slid down off the desk and went back around to the chair.

“Finally, I want you to use the rest of this class time to pair up for your projects. Please remember this project is going to be worth 20% of your final grade. The project is fairly straight forward. I’m going to want you and your partner to find and write up a recount of a humorous happening here in Fandom. It can be anything from jell-o dragons to the time a student was hit with a love spell and tried to date everyone. Just so long as it is an example of Fandom’s unique quirkiness. I will need to have names of groups before you leave class today. Homework, of course is to study and I will be here if you have any questions or concerns.”

With a wave of his hand, he gave the class permission to begin chatting amongst themselves to find and to partner up.

The classroom was even more open than usual when the students arrived, the desks having been replaced by a handful of folding chairs.

Right, let's get started, shall we? )

[ooc: this post will be open for play all week, since I know we have a variety of availabilities in here. Daisy is an option for partnering, but she's right, she is hard to keep interested. And she'll walk away. And keep walking. This excercise is one I've done for class, and my instructor related a story of doing it himself . . . in which he had to follow his instructor out to his car and get in in order to keep following his audience and keep them interested.]

V had laid out materials for his class once again, and this week they included all sorts of pens, pencils, crayons, markers, and all manner of paper.

"Sometimes," he intoned as he began to pace, "justice cannot be exacted immediately, and instead a plan must be formulated. These plans take time and care. You must know who, if anyone, will be your allies. What materials and resources will you use? Who will you target, when and why? Your assignment today is to choose someone, real or imaginary, who has somehow wronged you or others, and formulate a plan to strike back including these variables."

V gestured expansively to the craft materials. "I understand your parents are coming to visit in a short period of time. If you'd like to be artistic and create...charts, or visual representations of your plans, I shall be displaying them for your loved ones when they come."

He nodded sharply. "Work together or separately. I shall be available for questions."

[Be as creative as you would like with this. I'll tell you right now that that artpad thing is ADDICTIVE. It's pretty self-explanatory, and I believe there's a "save and send" function on the left toolbar. Then when that window pops up, there's a function for just getting the link. If you'd like to link to whatever you draw, I'd be happy to save the links and really display them for PW.]

The music room's stage has returned to normal and Lorne sits on the edge of the stage sipping his coffee as he waits for the students to take their seats.

"Okay kitties, last week we talked about the different styles of American music and today we're going to focus on one singer in particular," Lorne said leaning back on the stage. "She's my own personal savior in particular. A woman by the name of Aretha Franklin. )

"Good afternoon, everybody," Peter said with a grin as the group assembled.  "Hopefully everyone's recovered from the colourless weekend and no one else has turned into a puppet man?"  He may have looked far too amused at the last.

"Today I thought we could start having those of us who have studied for a while demonstrate their particular style of swordwork for everyone else.  Then we all have a bit of familiarity with each other's forms and perhaps see how they'd mesh.  Perhaps one demonstration a week for a while until we either run out of volunteers or there's something else that catches everyone's interest.  For today, Sakuazaki," he bowed to her, "has agreed to demonstrate her bladework for us."

"After that, we can pair up and work out or spar as the mood takes us.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, let me or Hamlet know.  If you'd like to volunteer to demonstrate your style, let me know as well."

[OOC: If your character would prefer to be asked to demonstrate, ping me in the OOC thread, and Peter will be happy to solicit their help.  After the demonstration, pair off as you like and chatter or spar as you wish.  Wait for the OCD, please. is up!]

Evie is entirely too gleeful today. Possibly it's all the Caff-Pow, possibly it's the doughnuts that are open in the box on the table.

"I found us another excavation site!" She spread out a map of the island on the center table. "It's just north of Selkie Cove. Or, at any rate, it's supposed to be. The wreck of the Albatross, a Spanish privateer that was run aground in 1592. Captain Gregory Thorpe and crew had to abandon ship and head into the mainland, and weren't able to find the wreck later. It could have ended up in the sea caves along the shore, and it definitely hasn't been excavated since."

"I think next week, we should go out to the site and try to ascertain where it might have ended up. As well as making lists this week, of what we'll need to start a full dig! I'm going to look for more information in Special Collections this week, to narrow the search down, if anyone else wants to help with that."

[OOC: Dummies' Guide]

"Good afternoon," Thursday greeted. "Keep the 24th of October free. It's a Tuesday, but this class will not run that day. You'll have a free period, then you're all to meet here after classes. We're going on a field trip. If there are any problems, or if you have an allergy to ink, be sure to let me know as soon as possible.

This week's novel is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The court room plays a large role in the novel, and as you would have seen can be quite a circus when the law is in motion. Today, this classroom is a court room." She gestured to how the room was set up. "We won't be covering anything as controversial as murder. I'll leave the controversy to the Ethics class. This case is straight-forward. The court is not.

I'll need volunteers for the following:

Four members of the Defence team who will defend the accused at all costs.
Four members of the Prosecution team who will prove the accused guilty at all costs.
A judge who will mediate the discussion and preside over the proceedings.
Seven members of the jury whose decision will be the final one.
Three witnesses who will play the Queen of Hearts, King of Hearts and the Knave of Hearts on the witness stand.

Then we have the accused. Mr Addy, you are hereby accused of stealing the Queen of Hearts' tarts.

The difference to this court is that Mr Addy can defend himself and anyone can ask questions that the Defence or Prosecution must then find ways to answer. Each side has evidence to interpret.

Enjoy."

[OOC: Pick a role, ask questions, mess with evidence and argue your case! You obviously don't have to participate, but if you don't intend to, just leave an OOC note saying so so people aren't waiting on you.]
