The announcements are early today. Very early.

"Good morning." And really, if you didn't know any better, you'd think he begrudged throwing in the "good" bit. "Yesterday's issue with the chalkboards has been mostly dealt with, although it seems a few of them have now decided to try and entice people to play dirty-word hangman instead. In addition, we have received reports of a mad red crayon on the loose around campus, attempting to grade people. Please guard your forehead carefully unless you wish to receive an F. Or a grade of 'Loser'. Thank you."

Once again, Ms. Sidle is seated behind her desk. Her puppy is laying at her feet.

"Final exam today, guys. I've enjoyed the time we've had together and I hope you've gained something from my class. If you haven't, don't say anything to that effect until I'm gone." A slight grin.

[ooc: Same drill. Tell me the test and semester grade, if you would.]

Mac allows an hour for all the students to put the final touches on their Pumpkin flinging devices.

Then he points at the virtual target and measuring range.

"Load up your devices and let 'er rip folks. See how you do with it. Just so you know? We're using real pumpkins here. So if you happen to hit someone with a pumpkin? It'll be a big mess. I'm just saying..."

"Also I'll be gone the next couple of weeks to get some physical therapy for my leg. In the mean time Sam Carter will be teaching the classes. Please give her the same respect that you do for me. On second thought, just give her respect."

[ooc: limited interaction today most likely. Respond with how well your device hits the bullseye target and how far your a pumpkin is flung from your device.

After that... I have no problems with a pumpkin war. :D]

Josh looked up from his crossword puzzle when the government class began walking in.

"Today we talk about the judicial branch," he said. "Specifically, the Supreme Court: the people who will decide if the bills you are writing--and they're due on Friday, in case you've forgotten--are Constitutional." He grinned. "So, other than wear cool robes, what do they do?"

Josh, still not trusting the chalkboard to not write insults, lectured from his notes.

"All right," he said. "We know that the only way to get rid of a member of the Supreme Court is either through retirement or the icy hand of death. Why do you think the Founders decided that was important for the federal judiciary? Do you think they would've reconsidered given that we live much longer now?"

"Today we talk about westward expansion," Josh said, pointing at a map of the United States he had pulled down over the chalkboard.

"We had been expanding since the Northwest Territories, out into the Louisiana Purchase, and all the way across the continent. As you remember from your reading on what led up to the Civil War, new states deciding whether to come into the United States as slave or free was a huge, huge deal." He shrugged. "But traditionally, we talk about exploring the West after Reconstruction. Mostly because there isn't anything interesting happening in this particular period of history unless you have a strange fascination with the Garfield Administration."

He wrinkled his nose. "Which I don't. So. Moving on."

He looked down at his notes. "This is a good point -- although it was pretty much a continual thing, sadly -- to stop and acknowledge that, yeah, the US government kind of completely screwed the Native Americans." He pointed to the map again, gesturing with his hands. "This map? Shows Native lands in 1824, the year that the Bureau of Indian Affairs was established." He flipped to another map, showing significantly less land. "This? Native lands in 1890."

He continued talking about the Homestead Act, the Gold Rush, Chief Joseph, Sitting Bull, and the battles of Wounded Knee and Little Bighorn for half of the class time.

He then pointed to several computers set up in the classroom. "Now you can have some experience pretending to travel West."

Why yes, he's letting you play Oregon Trail. Try not to die of a snake bite.

"Anthropologists learn about the culture of another society through fieldwork and first hand observation in that society. This kind of research is called ethnography. Today, I want to talk about different methods that ethnographers use to learn about different cultures.

There's participant observation, which ethnographers and anthropologists believe is the best way to get to know a society and its culture is to live in it and participate in it rather than simply observe. Having done it myself for a year, I was able to integrate myself into this society and I only wish that I could have spent more time there." Daniel's face clouded slightly and he looked slightly troubled.

"There's also ideal and believed behavior. deal behavior is what we think we should be doing and what we want others to believe we are doing. Actual behavior is what is really going on. Believed behavior is what we honestly think we are doing. In reality, our actions are often different from what we believe them to be at that time. For example, many North American husbands assume that they do roughly half of the work of cleaning and maintaining their home. Their wives would probably dispute that assertion. Does this mean that the husbands are not telling the truth? No, it usually means that their perception of what they are doing may not be realistic in this case. What other examples can you guys think of?

In most ethnographic fieldwork, only a portion of the host society is actually studied intensively. Due to the practical impossibility of observing and talking at length with everyone, only a sample of a community is selected. There can be a probability sampling, a random sample, a stratified sample or a judgement sample, which is what most ethnographers rely on. Why do you think that? What are the difference between these sample methods?

Ethnographers can collect reliable data and develop a realistic understanding of the cultural patterns in another society through a combination of five things:

1. Proper mental preparation (including adopting the cultural relativity perspective)
2. Participant-observation
3. Language competence
4. Long-term residence
5. Luck in being at the right place at the right time."

"All right, ladies," Rita said. "We're going to start work on one of our big projects this semester. I understand that last semester, you did a largescale project involving an article on a fellow student, yes?"

She smiled. "Your final this term will be similar, but doubled. I want you to interview and profile a good friend. You'll be allowed to leave campus, need to take photos, everything you did last term. And then, as a contrast, you'll need to interview a person you do not know as well, and do the same. This will be expected to be a large, well-done project, which is why I'm telling you so far in advance. Questions?"
[identity profile] imanaturalblond.livejournal.com
"Hello," Rita said, looking a bit irritable. There was a faint 'D (Dreadful)' scrawled across her face in red. "You were all told to pick a writing style you like. What did you choose? Who are you choosing to model your writing after? And so on. Share."
[identity profile] imanaturalblond.livejournal.com
Rita scowled.

There was a light 'T (Troll)' written across her neck.

"Yes. You were told to look up an article that you think was unethical on Friday. What did you find? Tell the class. What made it unethical? Why did you choose it? And so on."
[identity profile] dorky-broots.livejournal.com
Broots looked like he had just gotten into an argument with his laptop when the class came in. "Morning everyone. If you're not awake, coffee is in it's usual place.

Beginners, you guys are going to work on a couple interesting problems.
Problem one: John has an identical twin brother. Either John or his twin always lie. What three word question could you ask one of the boys that he will answer either yes or no that will reveal to you if you are talking to John or his twin?
Problem two: So you found out which twin is John. Now, is John the lier?
If you finish early, I have a few more problems that you can do for extra credit.

Intermediate, you guys get tormented by chess today. You have a normal chess board, eight by eight squares, sixty-four squares total. You are to put the numbers 1 through 64, one per square, on the board. The catch? When going from one to two, two to three, etc, you can only move in the same way the horse piece moves. So either two squares up, one right or two left, one down or two left, one up, etc. When you're done, you can use the chess boards to actually play chess."

Tonight, Zhaan was wearing a pin-striped suit. The slippers were in evidence, looking quite smart themselves. Folding her hands neatly in front of her, Zhaan started her lecture.

"Some would say plants are solitary creatures. And for some species, this is certainly true." Zhaan held up a photo of a saguaro cactus, "Even with their stately grace, however, you'll note the scrub growing around them. Some of this is simply due to the cactus bringing water to the surface. It's also due simply to the nature of plants: they thrive on contact with one another."

A smile lurked around Zhaan's lips, "Some plants even have a sort of language they speak. If you listen carefully, you might hear it."

"It's difficult, for plants to be on their own. They lose a sense of community. They feel alienated and alone." Possibly, she was going a little too close to her own experience. "Luckily, plants adapt and change with their environment. Two completely different species can learn to co-exist."

Shaking the sense of connectiveness off, Zhaan smiled, "And now, I believe I requested you turn in essays."

Jenny's got another stack of handouts. "Okay, guys, last week, I said we were going to be talking more about magic's history." She grinned. "One of the things we're going to be talking about along with the history of magic, well, are the beliefs about where magic comes from. To do that, why don't you guys skim through this handout on the theories of magic, and then we'll talk about it." She passed the handouts to everyone.

Camulus!Orlin comes twirling in. Across his chest is written,

A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And underneath that in smaller letters I know nothing.

He looks highly amused and begins his lecture.

"All right, I believe we are covering the Fenion Cycle. Yes we are indeed." He says this as he consults his notes.

This particular story is called Tóraigheacht Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne or the usual English title – "The Pursuit of Díarmait and Gráinne"

It was a very popular Irish romance of a love triangle that had most likely influenced the medieval romance of Tristan and Isolde of the 12th century.

So basically like every trashy romance novel now written for your intrest and perusal. I don't want to know which ones of you actually read them, but they are trash.

Now, to continue. There was a reference to this tale in the late 12th century manuscript known as the Book of Leinster, suggesting the original tale was composed around 1100, the surviving text we have of The Pursuit of Díarmait and Gráinne was written no earlier than the 17th century."

Camulus!Orlin shakes his head. These notes are so wrong. And so hard to read. The real Camulus should learn to write neater.

"Let me summarize this. There is a love triangle. It's going to turn bad because they always do, That's my lowly wisdom, please heed it. Phoebe, I need to talk to you."
