Speech 201 2nd Period

DAMN THE MAN! SAVE THE EMPIRE!

Sugar high over, and Josh's words maybe...and only maybe...sinking in, she revisits her righteous teen indignation and decides speeches will be anti-establishment this week. It's time to shake things up and say Damn The Man! There's a reason she went into politics in the first place, you know.

[If the music bothers Profs. Grissom, Pierson, or Chaucer, please, do come see CJ about it. She's very reasonable.]

Par for the course, she's got her earphones in and she's on the internet. The player is loaded full of The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Dead Kennedys, X, Agent Orange, Black Flag, and Green Day since Hogan sent it to her.

Water and trail mix and Bitch and punk. She's a ray of sunshine today.

[OOC: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] bridge_carson for the random inspiration for this class. Low-impact and character-rich? Woo. Class Info Post.]

The Tick was sitting at his desk looking slightly tired. Lockheed wasn't in class today. It was probably going to be an easy discussion.

"Hello, class! Lockheed is not with us today. He had something else to take care of. Today, we're taking a slight detour in our discussion. Today, we're talking about your experiences."

As soon as all the students have entered the classroom, Grissom shuts the door and stands in front of the class with his arms crossed, smirking.

"To those of you from Earth, you'll be very excited to know that today is Kama Sutra day. For those of you not from Earth, you'll be very excited to know that today is Kama Sutra day."

Professor Chaucer is sitting behind his desk. He looks hungover, but in a better mood than he did yesterday. Which should tell you something about the kind of day he had yesterday. There's coffee (regular and decaf) and muffins set out on a table to the side of the classroom.

Again, Professor Chaucer is in his office. It might seem strange that he's nursing a hangover this late in the day. But that should give you some idea of how much drinking he did last night.

Still, he's functioning if you need to talk.

"Hello.

Today, we will conclude our unit on French literature with a quiz, which should take about half of class. To use up the rest of the period, you may study or watch Les Triplettes de Belleville in the media center adjoining the classroom.

On Thursday, we will begin discussing the Norse saga, per Mr. Dane's excellent suggestion."

[OOC: The quiz is 15 multiple choice questions and two brief essays. Post that you took the quiz and the grade you think you earned. Then go watch a cartoon.]

"Feasgar math, a chlas. Good afternoon, class. My . . . apologies for the absence of class on Thursday. We will continue with our study of traditional sources of Arthurian legend.

"There are two major medieval texts we will be looking at." He begins handing out texts. "And we will be confining our scope to English sources, although I may bring in the French and German romances about the exploits of the knights. There are several recurring themes and motifs that we will be focusing on in class. We've already seen one in 'Culhwch and Olwen', that of the cauldron which becomes the Holy Grail. The Holy Grail continued to evolve in meaning and significance throughout history. A second is the role and position of women, and how that effects the behaviour of men, the development of chivalry, and politics. We'll be paying close attention to the social structure of the City of Legions, one of Arthur's Camelots. The role and identity of Excalibur, the Lady of the Lake, and so on and so forth.

"I'll assign all of your readings todays. We'll go over them in class, and I'll expect you to draw examples from both during class discussions. I'd like you to read from Geoffrey of Monmouth's 'A History of the Kings of Britain', but only Book IX and chapters I and II of Book XI, and Sir Thomas Malory's La Morte d'Arthur, Book XXI."

He looked around the class. "Questions? Topics you'd like to cover?"

The P.A. crackles to life.

"There is but three announcements for today.

One, Mister Barbossa should inquire with Miss Skeeter about the definition of the word libel.

Two, a quick thank you to whoever deposited cupcaked in my inbox yesterday.

Three, the town is lawless and anarchy current reigns. Those going out on excursions would be recommended to take a buddy with them so you die together, as there is laughable safety in numbers.

Good day."

Before each class, Lorelai says, "I apologize for my absence last week and thank Piper for filling in last minute. I will be relying on her assitance more this semester than I did last because I'm expecting a baby. I expect that you will all grant her the same respect as you would grant me when she fills in."

Business Law – First Period – 1/24
Philosophy of law is a branch of philosophy and jurisprudence which studies basic questions about law and legal systems, such as "what is the law?", "what are the criteria for legal validity?", "what is the relationship between law and morality?", and many other similar questions.

Rest of the Lecture found here

Discussion Question: Which of the 4 schools of thought do you agree with most?

Homework: 100 Words on any philosopher of law (c&p from wiki is okay)

HR Management – Sixth Period – 1/24

The Federal laws prohibiting job discrimination are:

*Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin;

*The Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA), which protects men and women who perform substantially equal work in the same establishment from sex-based wage discrimination;

*The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), which protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older;

*Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which prohibit employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in state and local governments;

*Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities who work in the federal government; and

*The Civil Rights Act of 1991, which, among other things, provides monetary damages in cases of intentional employment discrimination.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces all of these laws. EEOC also provides oversight and coordination of all federal equal employment opportunity regulations, practices, and policies.

Rest of Lecture here

Discussion Question: Do you think these are acceptable laws?

Homework: 100 words on any of the EEOC laws (c&p is fine)

All right, class. You know how the syllabus says that this week is early Greece and next week is Classical Greece? It lies. When I started writing the lecture, it seemed easier to divide things between cultural and political than on arbitrary dates.

Now, we barrelled through Sumeria, Egypt and Crete to get to Greece for a specific reason. While Greece was very heavily influenced by the cultures around it, it itself became a hugely influencial culture. To this day, something cast in the image of ancient Greece has an automatic dignity and authority.

Ancient Greece -- Politics and Wars: Agamemnon to Alexander )

All right, next time we're going to focus on the cultural developments.

Your homework from last week is due today here. Please turn it in if you have not already done so.

[[OOC: As always, much lint to [livejournal.com profile] aka_vala, who prepped this even though she hates the Greeks. (Sources here, here, and here.)]]

The door is cracked open. If one peers in, one could see a teenage boy with brilliantly red hair sitting behind the desk, scribbling in a notebook and drinking like, his fifth can of Coke.

He's totally writing angsty poetry. Or bad love letters. But you don't get to read them unless Rhi gets bored later; check this space.

If he looks up and chews on his pen, one who knows him could possibly see similarities in his face and eyes to the man who's supposed to be there.

Rita sat on her desk, checking her lipstick in a compact.

"Good morning, girls and...boy. Today's an easy day. I want you to tell the class what you investigated, and what you discovered. Was it difficult to get people to open up to you? Did you even talk to people, actually? Or did you go the surreptitous route of avoiding human contact?"

She waved at a tray on her desk.

"And do turn in your written findings, please."

Josh was shaking his head over the results of the Canadian national election when the political campaigning students came into the classroom.

Oooh. Message grids. Exciting! )

He sat down at his desk. "You know the drill by now. Break into groups, discuss, bother me if you have questions. I'm gonna sit here and wonder what the hell Canada was thinking yesterday."

[[OOC: Sorry for such a long lecture. But I think you'll find it entertaining.]]

All right, everyone. I hope that you haven't been abusing your writing hands too much, because I am going to do so today. Without further adieu...

This lecture is called 'And Why 1066 Was Actually Such a Bloody Big Deal' )

Methos surveys the class, smirking at anyone whose eyes were glazing over.

Homework is due here.
