Good morning, everyone. Coffee and doughnuts are next to the roll sheet. Please note that I will be giving our final exam next Monday and it will be cumulative. If you have missed any quizzes or labs to date, it would be a very good idea to make them up.

Any questions?

All right. Today we will be discussing the Earth's magnetic field.

Magnetic fields are produced by the motion of electrical charges. For example, the magnetic field of a bar magnet results from the motion of negatively charged electrons in the magnet. The origin of the Earth's magnetic field is not completely understood, but is thought to be associated with electrical currents produced by the coupling of convective effects and rotation in the spinning liquid metallic outer core of iron and nickel. This mechanism is termed the dynamo effect.

Rocks that are formed from the molten state contain indicators of the magnetic field at the time of their solidification. The study of such "magnetic fossils" indicates that the Earth's magnetic field reverses itself every million years or so (the north and south magnetic poles switch). This is but one detail of the magnetic field that is not well understood.

Jenny's typing away on her laptop, a pot of coffee is brewing on the credenza, and a newly-purchased scanner is working on scanning in all her students' prior assignments.

She's here for any students that might need to talk to her, whether they're in her class or just want to meet the new teacher. Also, Elizabeth Weir had questions about magic, and Parker wanted to learn more about the curse.

Janet unlocks the library and flips on the lights.

Sitting on the Collections Desk is a package addressed to "Adam Pierson." The envelope is embossed with an unusual symbol, the meaning of which Janet didn't know. Except she did, because she steamed open the last envelope that came with that symbol on it. But she couldn't do that to this package without getting caught. And that was really starting to bug her.

She moved the package behind the Collections Desk and glared at it until the first library patron showed up.

Criminology

Lecture on Hypnotically Refreshed Testimony

Discussion: Should hypnosis, and similar techniques, be used in the criminal justice system? Why or why not?

I hope all of you have found someone to interview for your project. If you are still having trouble locating someone, I may be able to arrange something for you. Please come to me after class with questions or concerns.

Death and Dying

Lecture on Euthanasia

Discussion: Considering the ramifications personally as well as socially, do you believe people have the "right to die"? Should people be able to choose when to end their lives absolutely, should there be laws that allow only physician-assisted suicides and how should they be written if so, or should no one be able to make that choice for themselves?

And for your information, you will be having a final exam. Please begin reviewing your course materials. A study guide will be made available at a later date.

Ash paces in front of the classroom, wearing a full black suit, white shirt, black tie, and a black hat.

The room is dark, and he's wearing sunglasses.

When all the students take their seats, he begins to sing.

And dance.

Soul Man, of course. )
"A-hem," he says after finishing his routine. "This ain't no music class, but I've got a list of art related musicly questions for everyone.

One, What makes music special?
Two, What makes the Blues special?
Three, Why do my balls itch?
Four, How many nuns would a nun-chuck chuck, if a nun-chuck would chuck nuns?
Five, Has anyone ever seen Doctor Carter outside her classroom? I'm beginning to think she's avoiding me.
Six, What's love got to do with it?
Seven, What exactly is the 'That' which Meatloaf refers to?
Eight, How Many Roads must a man walk down, before they call him a man?
Nine, Who would win in a fight: The Three Tenors or The Stooges?
Ten, What if God was one of us?
Eleven, Does anyone have photos of a certain Strip Triad game?
Twelve, Does anyone have videos of a certain Strip Triad game?
Thirteen, If you have a marching band going down the street playing in 3/4 time, and another marching the opposite direction playing in 7/8 time, what's the likelyhood of anyone caring when they run into each other in a scene of utter brassed-out carnage?

Also, you'll find copies of Cosmo under each of your desks. Please fill out the quizes inside and return to my office by the end of the term. That will be your final. Now get to the discussion, kiddos"

Dream is dressed in jeans and a t-shirt today, and he could pass for a slightly autocratic lead singer of any 80's band with Goth tendencies. He leans on his desk, clearly at ease.

"Hello.

All Classes: Instead of a final exam, I would like each of you to complete an end-of-term project. You will be expected to write a 200-word paper on any aspect of the languages we have studied or the cultures that gave rise to them. For example, you might discuss the way Hebrew and Greek are used in religious texts, or Chinese cuisine, or Japanese haiku poetry. Present your paper and at least one relevant visual aid in class on December 19 or 21. Pick a presentation date and topic before class on Wednesday. This counts for 25 percent of your grade, so I would advise you to put thought into your topic and the project.

If you do not understand the assignment, come see me in my office. I am also handing out fresh copies of the syllabus to remind you what we have covered in-class.

Classics: We have completed our study of verb conjugation in ancient Greek for now. Let me know if you still have questions. Today, we will move on to personal pronouns and the verb "to be." [Dream lectures on this topic. He realized that he was going a little fast for the class on Wednesday, so he's making a real effort to explain things slowly and clearly.]

Languages of Asia: We are going to learn some Japanese vocabulary for emergencies. I sincerely hope you never need to know that, for example, "Tasukete! Goutou!" is "Help! Thief!", but should you, it is better that you be forearmed."

Spider still has the Santa hat, although he looks a bit sullen about it. The cat is wearing what appear to be a completely genuine, if rather small, set of reindeer antlers.

"Today, kiddies, we're going to discuss our resident nano-cloud, as some of you have probably never seen him. I'm going to tell you about one of my Filthy Assistants - Channon Yarrow - and her ex-boyfiend and then I'd like each of you to write your impressions of the situation, the procedure, and how you feel about the entire business, all right?"

Due to many reasons, I will not be holding class tonight and I’m giving you all an extension to this Friday at noon for your crackfics cyborg fictional stories. If you have any questions, please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you and have a lovely day.”

Dewey sits at his desk, drumming on the top with his hands as he grooves to the music on his iPod headphones. He is nodding affirmatively, giving his best hard-rocker face until the bell rings and it is time to begin class. He stands up, and whacks the chalkboard affirmatively with his pointy stick.

History of the Ancient World

"So like way back in ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, an ancient race of people, the Druids. No one knows who they were or what they were doing and stuff. But then they went and built this awesome thing called the Stonehenge, like the greatest henge in the world. Now, maybe they warmed up first with a Woodhenge and a Strawhenge, but man, the Stonehenge was the tippest of the top. Now, the question really is... what the heck does a henge do, anyway?"

East Asian History

"So, Japan, right? Land of the Rising Sun, not to be confused with the House of the Rising Sun, which is a really kickass song, you know? Now, Japan was really kickass in its own way back in the time of the katana and the samurai. But what I'm really wanting to get at here is the history of the great guy, like, the first Emporer dude. His name was Jimmu Tenno. Now Jimmy didn't take no guff, even though all sorts of things were trying to get in the way of his founding the imperial line. But he perserved like a good little hero and got to be all divine and powerful. So basically, next time you kids have an issue or hardship in your life, maybe you should stop and think 'What Would That Jimmy Tenno Guy Do?' That's all I got, children. Go enjoy your sack lunches or something."

Easy class today, everyone. Essentially, I want to hear what you've come up with so far for your final projects. These are, need I say, very, very important for your grade. If you want to talk with me privately, that's fine, but perhaps your classmates could also provide some good insight. Sometimes it's better to have a second opinion.

So, let's talk.

Phoebe opened up the room and started setting of drinks and the usual snacks. She flipped on the lights and made sure there were no gremlins in sight.

Once everything was in place, she took her seat and once again started going over the tutorial proposal that Anya had put together.

301--Practice

Papers are due. Turn 'em in.

This is our last unit. You've all learned so much over the term, I'm very proud of you. Hang in there...we only have practice, your final project, and your final...then it's home for the holidays! Or, you know, stay here.

Ok, practice. Every day you talk to people. You listen to teachers. You, you select few, have the tools to unpack the message. You should, by now, understand what role trust plays, how influence is used, the perils of obedience to authority, and the sender/message/receiver paradigm...inside and out. You should be hyper-conscious right now, having just finished it, on how body language can bolster or skew a message entirely for a receiver.

Given all you know, your task today is to form into pairs. I'd like you to challenge the trust you hold for one another. You may or may not choose to use any of the things you learned to convey a message. Each of you do this. The message you choose to send is up to you.

Furthermore, in prep for tomorrow, be conscious of one particular interaction that happens today, and be prepared to discuss it tomorrow following the above criteria.

Ok, gang. Go.

Tara's face is tight and drawn as she addresses the class.

"For those of you who heard about Friday's class - we're not talking about that. If you wish to talk to me in my office hours you are very welcome to although they will be slowplayed liek woah, because I'm single parenting this week. However, I would appreciate it if we could keep in-class discussion today on the topic at hand.

"The topic, such as it is, will be chosen today by you, not by me. Here's what I want you to do:

"Raise an ethical issue. Give us your opinion on it. I don't mind what you choose - there are hundreds of issues we haven't touched on yet in class. Go wild. Have some fun with it, if you want to, just make sure there is an ethical question to be addressed. Respond to another person's raised issue with your opinion - beyond just 'I agree'. I'd love to see you all engage in some proper debates with one another, and I'm quite happy to give extra credit for people who engage in multiple debates."

Daniel is looking very happy this morning, although students might notice when he moves, he's pretty stiff.

"Morning class. I hope you all had a great weekend," he says, grinning. "Today, I want to discuss migration.

Human migration has taken place at all times and in the greatest variety of circumstances. It has been tribal, national, class and individual. Its causes have been climatic, political, economic, religious, or mere love of adventure. Its causes and results are fundamental for the study of ethnology, of political and social history, and of political economy.

In its natural origins, it includes the separate migrations first of Homo erectus then of Homo sapiens {Homo sapiens sapiens) out of Africa across Eurasia, doubtless using some of the same available land routes north of the Himalayas that were later to become the Silk Road, and across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Now, class discussion. How do you think migration has affected population genetics?

For homework, I want at least a hundred words on migration and genetic markers for Wednesday. Thank you, guys; have a great day."

Fencing Club is canceled this week due to
the club head and most of the members being outside frolicking around in the
snow. Meetings should resume per usual next week.

Daniel's still looking pretty happy, but still moving gingerly at the front of the classroom.

"Morning everyone, I hope you had a great weekend. I'll have the homework on my desk, please, at the end of the lesson.  Now, instead of my scheduled lecture, we're going to have a question and answer discussion. We're going to talk about what you want to talk about. That okay with you? Or should I continue talking about Sais?"

He grins.

"Someone will ask a question, and we'll see if anyone else knows the answer. If not, then I'll do my best to answer it.

Now? Any questions?"

At the end of the lesson, he smiles.

"Pick one of the subjects we talked about, and I want a hundred words on it for Wednesday. Thank you everyone. Have a good couple of days."
