Office Hours

Daniel's good mood had mostly disappated thanks to his Egyptian Archaeology class. A cup of coffee firmly in hand, he retreated to his office, hoping that he wouldn't be bothered for the two hours that he was supposed to be there for.

Sighing, he surveyed the last of the midterms he still had to mark. As soon as he'd finished with these, he'd have to start thinking about his classes' final exams. After today, perhaps Egyptian archaeology students should get extra credit for not mentioning aliens.

*The Tick is at the podium as normal, but his expression has an unusual twinge of annoyance in it. If this twinge is noticed, it might be a good idea not to mention it. Lockheed is on his normal bookshelf.*

Hello, class! Before we get started, Rory will be posting the grades for the quiz you took a few weeks ago. Sorry it took so long to get it graded, but with one thing after another, things have been crazy.

Dewey is playing Led Zeppelin on a miniature boombox. Led Zeppelin III, if you must know.

History of the Ancient World
"Okay, the Greeks were totally into pantheism, so much that they named their most awesome Gods the Panthenon. Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Aphrodite. These were some badass homeboys, and they didn't take shit from nobody. I gotta bunch of books I found on sale by some chick named Edith Hamilton. Your homework, should you choose to accept it, is to find a really awesome myth and report back to me on what it is and why it rocks on Thursday. Now get out of here and enjoy the snow."

East Asian History
"Today, we watch Rashomon, which I'm told is a kickass movie about how the truth plays tricks.... with the MIND!" He points at his temples. "So, yeah. Watch it, and then after, let's talk about, like, that. Or something. You can fall asleep during the movie if you want."

Dream is in his robes today, and a dream catcher in the Ojibwe style hangs from a corner of the blackboard.

All Classes: Instead of a final exam, I would like each of you to complete an end-of-term project. You will be expected to write a 200-word paper on any aspect of the languages we have studied or the cultures that gave rise to them. For example, you might discuss the differences between Cat in domestic and free-roaming animals, or French cuisine, or whatever interests you. Present your paper and at least one relevant visual aid in class on December 15 or 20. Pick a presentation date and topic before class on Thursday. This counts for 25 percent of your grade, so I would advise you to put thought into your topic and the project.

Students who took more than one class with me this term may hand in a single final project, as long as it integrates things learned in all classes; for example, if you took Languages of Europe and Languages of Asia, you might do a paper on the way French and Asian influences have mingled in Vietnam. The grade for it will count for each class.

If you do not understand the assignment, come see me in my office. I am also handing out fresh copies of the syllabus to remind you what we have covered in-class.

Cat: While I am not unmindful of the concerns raised by Mr. Samuelle, my decision about transformations stands. I am sure that you will be able to make it through five classes in human form.

Today, I would like to talk about the role of cats in folklore and superstition. There are hundreds of feline folktales and superstitions - cats predict the weather, sense domestic disharmony, steal a baby's breath, steal a dead person's soul, bring either good or bad luck and carry away a sick person's germs. Cats' eyes tell the time or the tides. Cats are witch's familiars, enchanted princesses, beloved by priests and prophets or envoys of the devil since they were sneezed forth by lions on the Ark and not created by God. [Dream continues his lecture.]

Languages of Europe: We have only a few class meetings left. It would be a shame to waste them all on verbs. I am handing out a volume of modern French poetry; pick one poem you like and translate it to the best of your abilities. English-language versions of the poems are at the back of the book for you to check your work.

I myself am quite fond of "Sortant de Saint-Pierre de Rome, j’écris," by Michel Deguy.

Janet unlocks the library, flips on the lights, and goes behind the Collections Desk. She checks in Methos' office to see if his delivery from yesteray has been opened yet. Or if it's still there. Then she starts looking up useful books for her Indo-European and Classics presentation and working on her independent study in math.

Posted for all to read are the Rules of the Library.

[The following note is taped to the outside of Professor Chaucer's classroom door.]

Introduction to Western Literature has been cancelled for today. Professor Chaucer gives his sincere apologies and hopes that you will use this time in study hall or the library to continue your reading. As he's aware that's somewhat unlikely, he hopes that you will at the very least not use this time to plot mayhem and destruction.

Anyone who needs to discuss end-of-term projects and/or unexcused absences may find Chaucer in his office hours tomorrow.

The following students have unexcused absences which need to be discussed:

[livejournal.com profile] miss_thomasina: two absences
[livejournal.com profile] ___lily_evans_: four absences
[livejournal.com profile] studentwillow: five absences

The following students have discussed and recieved approval for their final projects. If you are not on this list, contact Chaucer immediately. Projects will be presented in class on December 21.

Spider is absent, although the cat is sprawled across the desk, looking smug. It is currently using today's attendance pad as a scratch pad - and not in the conventional sense. The huge screen behind it is lit with two lines of text.

"I hate the holiday season and I do not celebrate.

Take the time to choose a holiday tradition of some sort and attempt to convince me that it would be fun."

When the students enter the classroom they'll see that the familiar junkyard has been reinstated.

Sitting on the tables are some old coffee grinders.

"Your assignment today is to create a machine that will connect to this old coffee and grind the coffee. The machine can be powered by anything but an actual engine. Anything that powerful would destroy the coffee grinder. Feel free to use anything in the junkyard."

This is Charlie's last open office before the exam on Friday. If anyone has any questions or know they'll be away at that time, now is your chance to let the professor know.

Charlie is sitting by his desk, munching gingerbread numbers and making notes.

201--Pathos

Pathos is an appeal to the emotional state of the audience. Write me a speech that will tug at my heartstrings. Please, in an awww way, not an emo way. It's brainstorming day. Go. Feel free to work together.

301--Practice

You were supposed to have paid extra close attention to one interaction from yesterday. Let's break them down. Tell me what happened and we'll figue out why. Anything is game. Go.

Welcome to class everyone. I hope that the holiday spirit has managed to grab ahold of you, I know it's fondled me inappropriately certainly perked me up quite a bit!

First, this is the last call for your squares for our class quilt.

Today we will make Holiday ornaments. You can make one for a Christmas tree, or if you don't celebrate the birth of God's only son you are so going to H-E-double-hockey-sticks, you filthy infidel you could make a lovely window decoration.

Supplies are in the back, and the kittens are in class today if you're in the mood to dodge miniature weapons to play with them.

[Oops! Sorry this is late, I am having the week from H-E-double-hockey-sticks.]

"Good morning, class," Daniel says, smiling. "First, I'm going to hand out your grades for your midterm."

He reads down the list in alphabetical order. [[The grades are fairly marked, and you got what you deserved basically]]

"Today, I want to talk about Homer, the Illiad and the Odyssey. Homer is the name traditionally assigned to the reputed author of these two major epics of Greek antiquity. Nothing is known about Homer as an individual. In fact, the question of whether a single person can be said to be responsible for the creation of the two epics is still controversial. However, linguistic and historical evidence allows the assumption that the poems were composed in the Greek settlements on the west coast of Asia Minor sometime in the 9th century BC.

What can you tell me about any of these?

For homework tonight, I want you to choose a character from each of the poems and give me a hundred words on them. Thursday's homework, on Greek and Roman Gods..." He taps the  tray on his desk. "Here. Thank you, and I'll see you on Thursday."
