doesdoctorstuff: Navaan from Trudy Cooper's Oglaf (Clinic)

Their teacher had met them in town at Portalocity today, after leaving long, rambling, probably inappropriate messages telling them where to go. "Let's go!" she said, slightly muffled under her heavy cloak and plague doctor gear. "No classroom today, folks! We're going on an adventure! Rule number one of being a doctor: always be ready for adventure!"

You might have thought that the first rule of a doctor was something else, perhaps along the lines of 'do no harm,' but you would be wrong. And that was why Navaan was teaching this course and you weren't.

"Portals can take us to lots of places," Navaan chatted as they walked. "Which is great, because we need to go somewhere else than this island. I totally tried to stock the pond in the park, but all the stupid birds ate my precious babies, so we're off to somewhere we can get them instead!" She paused and looked at her assembled class. "Hmm. Maybe I should have told you to wear ratty clothes. And waders. Maybe some waterproof boots." And then she shrugged, merrily putting it out of her mind. "Oh well. Too late now. Hope no one's wearing anything nice, because here's our portal!"

Their portal delivered them right in the middle of a swamp. The lucky students exited onto the strip of dry land. Any unlucky ones (and Navaan herself) landed directly in the bog, sinking to roughly knee-height in the dark water. It was night there, the sky dark and cloudy, with a lot of dead trees reaching up towards it. The air was hot and thick and mosquitos buzzed loudly. In the distance was a stone building, where the words 'I AM A DOCTOR' were painted on the front. You smart ones might be able to guess whose house that was, though whether she was the owner in the strictest sense of the word was up for question.

"Okay!" Navaan said, peeling off her cloak and facemask. Underneath, she was wearing thick, water-proof pants and rubber boots, and seemed to be completely unfazed by where she was standing. The rest of you could start making your way towards land now--though be careful not to knock over any of the line of fishing poles that were set up. "So, the smarter kids in the class already remember this, but not all of you struck me as that when we talked last week, so I'm gonna say it again. The most important tool in your doctor bag - and you'd all better have your doctor bags, you're studying to be doctors, you need to be responsible - is leeches. Are leeches. Is is 'is' cause 'tool' is singular? Heh, tool. Or is it plural, cause leeches are? Never mind. I'll visit a wordsmith later to find out. Anyway, leeches are super-useful and important, and no doctor should ever be without them!"

Navaan pulled her jar of leeches out of her bag and showed them off to her students, smiling proudly. There were five or six leeches in there and the jar was half-full of pinkish-gray water. On the bottom there were chunks of--something--that the students would probably prefer not to think about too closely. Too bad. This was your lesson today, kids. "Lotsa cool things you can do with leeches," she explained, opening the jar and taking one out. It was about six inches long and glistened wetly on her gloves as it started to slowly move about. "These suckers are great for medicine. They secrete anti-coagulants, which means that wherever you stick 'em'll keep bleeding. The blood keeps pumping which'll help keep fingers and stuff from falling off after you reattach 'em. Their drool is filled with all kinds of useful stuff, including an anesthetic and anti-inflammatory enzymes. They're awesome that way. Also, cause they fill up with blood in about twenty minutes, they make great snacks."

Ha ha. That was a...joke? Maybe?

"So today, you're gonna get to know your new best friend, the leech. We're gonna start with how to catch them, then how to take care of them, and then how to use them. You ready?"

Probably not. That wasn't going to stop her.

Ahhh, nothing like a nice outdoorsy class right in the smack dab middle of the day in summer to really catch the most of the heat and humidity that the eastern seaboard had to offer! But, of course, Gladio was living for it, and he was ready to meet the class at the edge of the preserve. His usual grin might have been a little more reserved out of deference for anyone who may have decided to come to class despite discovering why too much alcohol was full of regrets the next morning (not to name any names or anything, though, of course), and he gestured at all the stuff he had at his feet today.

"Before we head up to the campsite today," he announced, "we're going to be taking a moment to talk about camp first aid and putting together first aid kits to bring with us. Even if you're just taking a nice casual little camping trip out for a night or a weekend, anything can happen out there, so you've got to be prepared. We'll also talk about some of the more common injuries you might encounter and what to do about them, and once we're all kitted up and ready, we'll head on out."

“Welcome back,” Stark said. “Hopefully your weeks went all right? I know some odd things have been happening.”

Not, oddly enough, to him. Maybe the island had decided to give him a break this time.

“Last week we had cupcakes and Cupcake Wars. This week we’re watching an older show, called Iron Chef, from Japan. There were a group of chefs called Iron Chefs and each week a challenger would come to Kitchen Stadium to battle against one of them with a secret ingredient chosen by the Chairman. You’ll see him in a moment. You’ll see all of it. There are a lot of episodes and they’re all entertaining but I had to choose just one. Battle Strawberry. Strawberries seemed like a good choice since it’s summer now and they’re extra delicious now.”

Stark nodded towards the table full of snacks. “I have strawberry snacks, of course. Plain strawberries, strawberry brownies, strawberry pie…” Far too many strawberry foods (some of which were moddable!) for the number of people in the class but he had someone in mind to share extras with later.

“So, we’ll watch some chefs make some very interesting strawberry foods and we’ll eat some slightly less interesting strawberry foods that are still delicious. And…I hope you enjoy all of it.”

"My apologies," Gale said once the class arrived. "I had meant to work on presentation for you all, but there has been some events that have transpired that have taken my focus away from teaching you all."

The events were a tressym lashing their tail back and forth on the desk in annoyance.

"So, today we'll instead be sharing the sorts of magic you are more accustomed to with each other, yes? How does that sound? A little round table, if you will."

Since no one had the same type and he needed to figure out how best to work with this all. Why couldn't you all have one, perfectly normal spell list to pull from and no weird factors? Why?

"Let's begin!"

Once again, yoga class was going to be meeting on the beach, and, once again, Rosa was going to get right into it so she could be done with the talking and get straight to the good stuff, aka, stretching and not talking.

It was something she would like for her students to take as a cue from here, but she was not hopeful of that being the case.

"The second week," she said, "means we're moving onto the second chakra to focus on, the svadhishthana chakra--good luck saying that three times fast--also known as the sacral chakra. It's said to be the energy source for prana‘vyana, which is the energy of circulation. It's tied in with the element of water and the color orange. Svadishthana basically means 'dwelling place of the Self,' so this chakra aligns with things like," there was a sigh, because this was always a fun one for the class, really, "sexuality, desires, and creativity. It's supposedly located in the lower abdomen below the navel. When it's open, you're supposed to be more likely to feel creative and open with your wants and desires and personal relationships. When it's blocked, people tend to be overly sensitive or irritable, prone to depression or anger."

What do you mean, was she even qualified to teach how to open this chakra?

"But anyway," she said, "that's the idea behind it, so let's get to some asana that balance this sacral chakra to leave to you being more emotionally balanced as a person, or whatever. First, though, our warm up, and then we'll get into some poses to work on today."
